I know, I know, but pretty sure that was an 87ai - I liked it better than the NT, but not sure it's a great leap forward.Wish they had a normal 87 in there too just to compare. Anyhoo, what a singer.....
There's a guy around here who mods the NT1a's , but they come up around £500.

nt1 is a toy compared to an 87. Don’t waste your money - there are way better options out there.

Try using those NT1a’s for OH and have fun spending the whole mic trying to de-fang the hi hats. If you want U87 vibe on the cheap, get a 3U MKID. Not precisely a U87 but a meaty, in the U87 ballpark mic that will eat an NT1a (and most any other budget mics) for breakfast.

Thanks guys, agree totally. I got rid of said NT1a a while ago after lurking here and learning that not all mics are equal (honestly never knew that before duh). Also spent hours earlier this year trying to de-ess the last tracks that I made with it!
The vid demonstrates a point not often mentioned - cheaper mics may just sound passable, but as soon as any processing such as compression or reverb is applied either on an individual track or even a bus, they totally lose their shit. Was a bit suprised that the 87ai had some of those traits too.

I had the Roswell Delphos here for a week. It held it's own next to mics costing more than twice as much, and it's clearly in the U87 family of tone. It's the first under $1,000 mic I felt I could use on a album and not cringe from regret every time I listened.
I'll be trying the Warm U47 style mic next month, so maybe that'll handle the Neumann style sound I'd like to have available, but Stam is making some really interesting new U47 and U67 style mics that for a little more, might really be a truly viable alternative to buying a U87Ai.
The thing with the Neumann, there's no compromise or flaw in the sound, it sounds like it sounds, and if you like that, you're golden for a couple of decades.

Thanks Martin interesting stuff. Just played this game, I thought a) was the 87, b) the 414, and c) the Delphos. Guess what..? ps can you try an AA 47 as well as a warm 47? interested to hear your views on both

For some reason I thought the U87 was really nasty and sibilant sounding in that video..

Agree. Wonder if it was an ai? There are quite a few for sale over here on ebay.

I got the U87 right, but I own one. I'm not as familiar with the 414 and haven't used the delphos.
