Well i just took possession of the massive Stager SR-1a ribbon mic. This mic is a beast. Weighs 3.6kg in the wooden box. wow that wooden box is very special. Loved the burned in logo and retro look. and the padding inside is great. Awesome way to not only build but properly store a ribbon mic. I gave it a quick test out against the SR-2n and the differences were not small. The extra weight that this sr1a in the sound is very noticeable. Man that Proximity Effect is huge on the sr1a. Instant 1950' s radio sound. super quiet with no hiss was also a bonus. It does seems that the Alnico ribbon mic needs a little more juice to push it then the neo sr2n model. I found i could get a more flattering top end sound out of the sr2n then the sr1a but then you really missed the super low end of the sr2a. Is all that low end just purely - proximity effect? or is it also due to the massive Alnico magnets? The SR1a had a very more in your face up present sound then compared to the Sr2n which i really like. made the sr2n sound like a distant mic. But it did look like the ribbon assemblies of both mics were extremely similar. But yes they do sound very different. And like usual you go away thinking - now if i can only find a ribbon mic that sits in between these two models. oh well i have a nice vintage RCA Variacoustic (precursor to the RCA 77) coming back from service that has been sitting for a while. Maybe that might be the in between model. Anyway this from just a quick test today on vocals. Will look forward to running them through there paces shortly. are there any other users out there of the sr1a? Would love to compare it to the big daddy RCA 44. Someday that RCA 44 will be mine

I got a pair of 2 Ns and a 1A. Only used them on drums so far and I am in love. Spectacular kit sound with just the 3 mics.
I was going for a fat, dark sound and I got it!!!
I'll be using the mics a lot and can report back more but the 1A out in front of the kit a few feet gave me exactly what I was after...big, bottom heavy image of the drum kit without cymbal overwhelm.
I can post the track here in a few days.
The 1A gave me exactly what I would want if I were to place an RCA in the same spot. The 2Ns were lovely in a Glyn Johns config.
Love these mics.
They'll be on every record I do. Can't wait to use them in guitars.

I am honestly pondering selling my AEA 44 and getting a Stager SR1A. Its really a good choice. And I will put some cash back in my pocket. Which might make me buy a SR2N. Can never have enough mics with special mojo. The Holographic "Vortex" inside the SR1A is amazing.
