This is the inside of the Audio-Scape Opto. I don't know much about electronics so I'm not sure if I'm justified in feeling underwhelmed when I compare this to the pictures posted of the real LA-2A guts. Perhaps some of you more knowledgeable gents can weigh in on that topic. I'll rack it tomorrow and test it out this over the next week.

Those guts are from what unit? From UA "Classics" Reissue circa 2000 unit number 297. Cool. When it arrives, if my Audio-Scapes isn't too hard to open, perhaps I'll take a picture to compare.

Oh, I misunderstood , sorry I am referring of course to UA Reissue from year 2000 for anyone reading. I opened mine up today after I wrote the post earlier. They really did do a nice job. Also shows what a fairly easy DIY this would be! Those guts are from what unit?

On the Audio-Scape website, he criticizes another manufacturer doing a 2U version of the LA-2A, saying corners are being cut. Could it be Stam ? I'm asking out of curiosity, not to bash one or another, I have a Stam SA-2A that I love btw. Just technical curiosity (walking on eggs, here...) He does make some more specific criticisms: "Some of these clones have things that shouldn't be there, opamps in the metering section, non original power supply scheme and modify tubes in the side chain..." I don't know enough about the guts in these units to know whose clones he's talking about.

Just got the notification that the eagle lands on Thursday. And since Friday is the first day of my very last vacation, the timing couldn't be better.

This’is the time to buy 1176 or LA-2 clones with STAM, Audio note Warm & even the KT stuff their are a lot of guys looking at their racks and crying over how much they spent 4 years ago or more! Very true. The Audio-Scape I ordered is less than 1/3 the price of the UA version and 1176 clones can be had for less than half the cost of the UA version. If I like the Opto, I'll want a second channel before anything else but I can also see myself adding an 1176 clone after that. Good thing I have a big rack.

No love for the Stam? Cheers Yeah, speaking as an owner, the Stam is great, too. Don’t know if it’s readily available to purchase, though. I think he still makes them in batches. The Stam might have worked out fine but I like the idea of having the high frequency knob on the front panel. Also, I'm pretty sure that up until yesterday, the Stam website said the next batch was to be built in Jan 2018. That gave me the impression that the batch was being built late and may not be ready for delivery any time soon. It looks like that's been updated now but, even if that wasn't the case, I think in the end I'd still have gone with the Audio-Scape.

Okay, I'm rolling the dice on the Audio-Scape unit. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the responses. That Audioscape unit looks promising.

I'd like to add one or two LA-2A type compressors to my rack at some point but I haven't heard the clones in person. Wondering what experiences folks here have had. Do any of them come close to the original or do they fall so short as to not really be worth the investment?

I thought the xmas sale for the 3+1 bundle for $399 was pretty sweet. that was a good one. I took part in the festivities:) I did too. And then they kept feeding me $25 coupons so I was able to grab all the cheaper plugins I wanted that were already on sale and get them for $25 cheaper than the sale price. I grabbed a few for just $24 bucks each that way.

But if they want to through a bone to us hardcore users, it would be gratefully accepted I thought the xmas sale for the 3+1 bundle for $399 was pretty sweet.

I own 69 UAD plugins so I get the max $2500 discount. The site shows that for $1499 I'd get another 20 plugins. A good many of that 20 are on the lower priced end, and many others are ones I don't care much about, so this doesn't seem like a good deal for me. I could see where this would be a great deal for people with 25-30 plugins though.

On the bottom, adjusted by a screwdriver (or guitar pick!) For my own wants/needs, those pots are too inconveniently placed. I'd also prefer a friendlier ergonomic design. I don't see myself ever building a separate recording room so the lack of a talkback button on the Audiolinear Axis isn't a big deal for me. My needs are fairly simple... transparent, 3 outputs with trim knobs, mono button, mute button.

No, but I can heartily recommend the Drawmer controller (MC 2.1). A key piece of my studio. It’s got trimmers, mono, 3 outs, talkback, phase inversion, all you need! Where are the individual output trim knobs on that unit?

I'm not in the market for a monitor controller now but I anticipate that I will be in a year or two. In the past I've owned the dbx Driverack Studio and the PreSonus Central Station. I've since sold both and I don't have a pressing need at the moment but when room allows one day, I'd like to pick up a pair of mid-fields to go along with my near-fields, so I'm looking ahead. I came across the Audiolinear Axis today and I'm intrigued for a couple of reasons: It seems to me the biggest plus is that it's a passive unit that doesn't require electricity. In my head that says it will probably effect the sound no more than would a patchbay. Am I wrong to think that way? The other cool feature is that each output has its own trim pot. I can see where that would be a very helpful tool for equalizing volume when comparing a mix on near-fields and mid-fields. Just wondering if any of you had any thoughts on this piece of gear. vintageking.com/audiolinear-axis-monitor-controller

The full blown flu is no joke. I only had it once and remember thinking I didn't think it was possible to be that sick and live. My mouth and throat broke out in fever sores that caused an explosion of pain like I'd never experienced before every time I swallowed. My fever didn't go below 103.5 for 11 days. By the end, my brain was so cooked that I had to think hard about how to do even simple things like feeding the dogs. Glad you're on the mend. Good Lord...ok, mine wasn't THAT bad... I took myself to the emergency room three times that week begging for anything to ease the pain in my mouth and throat even a little bit. They finally gave me a scrip for Vicadin. It didn't get rid of the pain but it took the edge off some. That really was the worst two weeks of my life.

Sorry I haven’t been around - I started feeling sick 8 days ago - and the flu has roooocked my world. 8 days of fever. Awesome. I’m getting better every day, man, this stuff is no joke. I’m now a week behind with work so I might be a little scarce. The full blown flu is no joke. I only had it once and remember thinking I didn't think it was possible to be that sick and live. My Sebatron Axis 200VU showed up yesterday. I had to spend the morning rearranging my rack but it's in and it works. I think I'm officially out of the preamp market now. I bet you like your M-1's! I know it will sound like bragging but every pre in my rack has really been a great choice for me. When I first got into recording, I had some Focusrite and Avalon stuff but I never really cared for any of it all that much. It worked, but none of it really shined for the acoustic based singer/songwriter kind of stuff I do. The M-1 was my first big boy pre. The Demeter followed soon after because I wanted to get some tubey goodness in the mix.

The samples sound fantastic, but that’s a pretty hefty price tag. I grabbed the Studio Bundle on an Educator's Discount. I don't remember what the price was with the discount but it was significant enough that I didn't think I could do better waiting for a sale.

I scored a Sebatron Axis 200VU on eBay for $1140. A year ago, when I was shopping for a new pre, I narrowed my choice down to the Axis and the Hendy Rembrandt. I wound up going with the Hendy but every now and again I'd take a look to see if anyone was selling the Axis on the cheap. At $1140, I felt the price was right. Now if only the mailman would finally get here.
