I like it for rougher forms of music like rock and blues. It's a bit too intense for all acoustic and bluegrass stuff for my taste. I fully admit to being a purist with forms of music like that and have achieved all the color I want prior to that stage, so that is why.

The Zener is really good for a couple of things. Distortion being one of them. It will really fatten up tracks without over compressing them. The other is glue and polish. It will make all the tracks of drums on the buss sound cohesive and alive. When I tried the Neve, it was a lot cleaner sounding in a sense that I felt it's best suited on the mix buss. I would think that multiple uses of it throughout a mix and I would get tired of the color of it. Personally, I think the Zener is more useful across a variety of sources and why I decided to get one.

I own the Slate VTM and will occasionally use it. I prefer the Oxide plug and find that it does what I want better for my tastes. I like it over all the other UAD tape style plugs as well.

Am I the only one who fixes things in PT using clip gain? It's okay if I am I track with minor compression on the way in, clip gain the balance to the entire track a bit while I edit and comp the vocal and then insert the compressor of choice at mix, which lately has been the RS-124. Print and it lays beautifully with the music.

It happens a lot here. Mixers don't want to spend time mixing as their clients don't want to pay for it and labels many times want a certain snare sound that sounds like a current hit on the radio and dictate that to the mixer. So, to speed up the process, they use samples that get the job done faster and they can wrap that mix an hour or more ahead of schedule. If I use samples, it's never more than 30% or so to make the sounds punch more. I believe that's how they were intended to be used correctly.

True but used it costs less than the tubes in the real thing! It's a bit better than the plugs. I thought it sounded like a plugin to my ears.

I tried out a rented Chandler Limited Zener comp/limiter for a day and ended up biting the bullet and getting one. Amazing drum buss and mix buss comp that will get tons of use around here.

Speaking of patchbays: Do you guys cut tiny strips of paper and then attach them to the patchbay, or use tiny strips of write on strip tape? I have a Redco DSUB Patchbay and the label space is very narrow and very clumsy. It's the worst part of the design. One more reason I love my Switchcraft patchbays. There is a place intentionally made by Switchcraft to label properly and a piece of narrow plastic goes over it to keep it clean and protected.

What I noticed the most was the quality of the low end. When some bands go "Americana", they tend to over-boom the bass drum like a Tom Waits record or Raising Sand, the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss record, among other things. It was perfect for them because of the connection to John Bonham, but for others, not so much, it comes off like a gimmick. This track had all the power the low end should have, but none of the attention grabbing nonsense. Also, the vocal hangs up nicely at the proper height in the soundstage, even though it's not trying to be real big. Check this out! It was a native American floor drum complete with native American, Sayota Knight, who has a band called Anasazi Secret, who are also clients of the studio with a couple of records recorded here under their belt. He even blessed the drum before we hit record. Attachment Deleted

Biggest surprise so far with the F765. Using it on upright bass. Whatever it's doing when in medium compression of about -6 db, it's helping the big thunder bass to be heard in small speakers. It's not robbing any bottom, just pushing the mids so that I can hear the upright in ipad, iphone, lap top and small bluetooth speakers. New not so secret weapon!
