was lost today. And it was my fault for not having her on a leash. I took her in the back yard - as I've done many times before - and she eventually ran over to the edge of the woods. I admonished her, but she darted into the woods. I followed and couldn't see anything and then heard a small yelp. Then nothing. We've had friends and family and myself looking for her for 5 hours. We're all just heartbroken. To top it off, this was an early birthday present for my daughter (we've had her three weeks) and today is her birthday. I can't tell you how horrible it has been. We've all shed quite a few tears. We've flyered the surrounding neighborhoods...she has a chip, but of course, it's not GPS...we're hoping someone has found her and will eventually take her to a vet to scan or see the flyers.
So...I might be a little while before wanting to think about gear.

I just can't imagine she is anywhere in the woods behind our house...I've scoured them.

I am so sorry this happened John.
This is probably annoying to hear and you've already thought of it, but just in case.
Did you try a squeaky toy or whistle in the woods?
Call the local SPCA, my one experience dealing with a lost pet is that they can be a tight knit group of people, and communicative across towns.
Don't give up!

This is terrible John. I know you'll do everything possible. The puppy will look for people or other dogs, so it's likely someone's already taken her in and is trying to find you.

Oh man, I'd be messed up if we lost our little dog.
Keep looking she'll turn up. The squeaky toy sounds like a good idea, maybe some food too.
It sounds like she couldn't have gotten too far before the little yelp, maybe she fell in a little hole or something and got stuck?

Hope you find her John. Been thru similar (but different) and it was devastating. Wishing for good people to find her and take her in and get her to the vet for a chip ID.

Thanks, guys...I know there are more important things - health being the number one...but man, this has been tough. We've only had her for 2 1/2 weeks, but it has been much tougher than I even thought it would be.

Years of having a Beagle who was an escape artist taught me . Flyers and Calling the Humane Society/ Animal control are as good, Walking around and putting your phone number and the words reward on the tag are still the best! Micro chip as Bill Said is great if the local organizations have and use the readers. Having a tag with the vets info also can help! No breakaway collers and use the biggest S- hook that will fit through the hole in the tag! Don't buy pretty tags, buy tags where you can't bend or break at the hole. Bo the Beagle may have gone through 5 homes in his first year, but spent the next 12 years , 6 moves and 100 escapes with us till he died at 13.
