I haven't watched those in awhile. They went from $400 to $700 to $3000 to $7000 fast, over a decade ago. The $3K to $7K jump coincided with modern UA rolling out new tube hardware.

Ridiculous...but hey - more power to them.

I feel like old gear is so dangerous to handle, with everything exposed all the time like that. Gotta thank modern engineering for that one at least.

I don't know if you guys ever look at LA's musical instruments vs Nashville's or other places, but compared to Baltimore, you can really get some good deals on people selling off their failed dreams... Much bigger pool. Although I can sell a DJ controller for top dollar in a day or two!

Oh sorry - you have to pay a fee on GS to see the post.
If only there was a place to sell gear that was free...

It's certainly not worth that much, but it takes only one who must have it.
Hmm,, maybe someone will make a clone? or has that been done already. It seems interesting.
There were some 176's at The Barbershop Studios when I did my mic shootout, but we didn't try it. Something like an 1176 with tube must sound really sweet.

It's just a circuit with a tube in it. You would think it wouldn't be that hard to recreate.

There's fairchild clones. They are still about $15k +. Not a cheap unit to make. There's also a Drip DIY version. Again, not cheap and not easy.

And then there's the UAD version that sounds exactly like it. I mean exactly. No difference.

We've got 2 and they are awesome. Would I pay 16k for a pair that are basically impossible to match? Nope! They are great for certain things though.

No - no UA 176 (which confuses me). I was talking about the Fairchild.

Something like an 1176 with tube must sound really sweet. Nothing remotely like an 1176. I assumed because it was the immediate predecessor to the 1176, it would be kind of like a tube version, I have no clue though, having never heard or used one. EmRR, how would you describe it's sound?

It's been 20 years since I used one, so a little foggy, but the compression sonics of any vari-mu comp I've used is pretty different from any FET 1176 type. Honestly everyone I knew who owned a 176 was happy to see them go when they were suddenly worth $700 instead of $50. My primary memory was they were very squishy indistinct and small sounding, with the LA-3's, 1176's, dbx 160's, Allison Gain Brains, Neve 2254's and 32264's that were around always winning. One place I worked had 3 of them, and that was everyone's feeling about them all. YMMV of course! I always liked the older octal tube broadcast limiters more myself, but there I'm comparing memories versus side by side reality. I could feel differently today for all I know. I do know I'm not a fan of the UTC O series transformers found on those, and if I'm building something for myself I'd never use that iron for the job. I haven't heard any of the Retro 'replica' products.

No - no UA 176 (which confuses me). I was talking about the Fairchild. Any time I have filled out a UA survey I have as asked for them to consider a 175/176 Emulation. That, or to to work with Phil Moore to create a Retro suite. I had a pair of Retro 176's a few years ago. It's the only real world gear for which I have not been able to find a good digital emulation (I did grab that plug that has a 176 as an option - I forget which one it is - but I didn't really love it). The asymmetry feature was my favorite thing about it, and really allowed for natural sounding compression. The UA Manley VariMu has some of the tonal characteristics, so I usually use that when I would have reached for the Retro, but it sure would be nice for UA to offer an emulation of one of their own classics.
