I've been in the market as well, been leaning the Orion32 route though. Looks like a good way to go.. I had a look around, heard they've improved the UAD Apollo 16. So off I twaddle to have a look, the ONLY problem with it was the DAC to the monitor outs in the original design. That's the only thing they had to fix as they're of lesser quality than their line outs and that's the only thing they didn't improve. Where's the logic in that? So if there are any Apollo users, can you change your monitor out selections and couple them? I could be wrong, but I don't think there are monitor outs like there are on the UA. There are 4 dsub connectors that you would probably just wire to a patchbay or directly to your monitors/monitor controller. So you'd basically be able to choose whatever line outs you want to use as your monitor outs.

I want a Heider too. Just wish there was a build option.... i don't like spending that much on a preamp. (although I probably will end up getting one eventually).
Shadowamd, I can't say that they're better on everything obviously, but for this particular vocalist, singing into a DIY u87 with a heiserman capsule, it sounded like it was more "record ready" off the bat, more presence in the mids, not too much though, and also seemed slightly more detailed. The LA610 sounded more scooped and even dull. Just uninteresting by comparison. Perfectly usable, just needed a touch of eq.

or if there are other recommendations for a capsule for this mic, i'm open to suggestions. just trying to get the closest thing to original.

So this isn't meant to be a "which one is better" thread. I've got 4 VP28's already and they're great. I'm in the market to probably get several more and am taking the opportunity to look at other options at the same time. I'd be interested to know the forum member's take on the aml vs vp28 that have experience with both. I'm wondering if the ez1073 has something to offer that i can't get with the vp28. They are a lot more money and I could probably have at least 2 vp28's for the price of one ez1073. That being said, they're not really that much more when you consider you're getting an eq as well.
Thoughts? drew571, they're different enough to have both. Both are excellent… IMO, the VP28 is the best "api sound" option other than getting a vintage console. As for the 1073 sound, I love the ez1073 and find it useful on many sources. I primarily record vocals and guitars. It's hard to beat the midrange punch of the VP28 on egtrs. If you want to smooth out the mids a bit, the ez1073 does that well along with a slightly rounder low end. Same goes for vocals. VP is gonna cut thru better, ez is gonna be a bit smoother. Generalizations, mind you. You may already know this, but you can widen your tonal palette with different DOA choices in the VP28. My personal favorite combo is 1731/2520. Hope this helps. Btw, if you're up for it… get the 19" rack kit from AML, knobs from jsteiger at Capi and cases from dandeurloo. Not much more money than the 500 series and they look badd ass. Is there a link for the dandeurloo cases? Pricing?

Had the pleasure of testing out my VP28's-->LA500's today against a Universal Audio LA610. Smoked it. Not really even close.
Just sayin.

I've done 2 JLM LA500's. At the time my previous DIY experience was limited to some VP26's and some stompboxes. Oh, and a Hammond C3 and trasnforming a Leslie 22H into a 122. They are fairly straightforward. Just follow the directions carefully when calibrating at the end and you should be good. They sound fantastic.

yeah. i'm wondering just trying to get a feel for how much better they would sound with the mod. i used to think they were decent sounding mics. and for some things they still are. i like em on a leslie cabinet, it's nice to get some of that high breathiness. that being said, i just finished a pair of u87's about an hour ago and don't feel the need to have a huge overhaul done to them to get them sounding exactly like 87's. i could see myself spending $120 to make a good improvement though and have something better to rely on when the 87's are in use elsewhere.

littlesicily, do you put the 1731 first and the 2520 last in the chain on your vp28? I have them the other way around currently. Might have to try flipping a couple.

I have an AML 1073ez. It will defiantly give you something that other Neve press won't. It's straight up gritty, in a nice way and the eq is excellent. It's a great pre. I have a lot of Neve flavors but no Capi yet. I might be interested in working out a trade if you are??
Cowboy, which version do you have? 500 or rack? and PM me your idea for a trade. i may be interested.
