Hi Joe, So are the faceplates different now with a selectable slow attack switch? Can you elaborate on this a bit?

Used them on drum buss and stereo keys. Hadn't had time to try them on more. Had to pack up studio about a month after I got them as we're moving.
Sound great on bass, Vox, electric guitars as well. Have had a chance to use them on more than that but so far everything I've put through them comes out very musical. The amount of gain reduction u get before hearing anything can be ridiculous at times. And even after you start hearing the gr it doesn't sound bad.

next on the radar for me is the jlm comp. I was hoping someone could give me a technical opinion on the 500 versus 51x format. deep down in the recesses of my brain I thought jlm audio at some time told me that 51x provided more headroom in the LA500 and brought it inline with the mac opto. can anyone confirm that idea? joemalonealso wondering what tangible advantage more headroom will give me. Hi Gouge. If I remember correctly the 51x version provides 2db extra headroom. Decide for yourself wether that's worth it. I'm running mine in 500 series.

I built two of these. They're amazing. Easy to build. Joe was helpful when I had questions.

Waves c6 can tame those frequencies nicely. I also like the sm7b suggestion.

Anyone know of any DIY stereo DI kits?
I suppose I could do a Ferrite DI, just get the parts and put it into a slightly larger case?
Any other ideas?

I just swapped out the JAN Phillips with a 50's pair of NE's from Bowie in mine. The difference is very very subtle to me. I'm anxious to hear your thoughts on the RCA's. I bought a 10 piece lot of northern electric tubes(canadian westerns), i went through about 6 tubes to arrive on a super quiet, smooth sounding pair. When i pulled out the ones that were in there, I could see a diff in the burn patterns, so i swapped the harder working looking ones for new and left the better looking ones, the last pair is an amazing sound IMO, so either i got lucky, or there is something to that? I'll try the RCA's in JK's mic, and also in my mic. I hope i can get JK's mic dialed and burned in for the winetree/tcamp shootout this weekend, the only thing that could stop me is hassling with noisy tubes i'd think. It will be more than fun to put the MK-U47 clones up against winetrees neumann U47 #38! yeah. please please please record the MK-U47 against Winetrees U47.

cool. I wonder if there are some possibilities of modding some current cheaper stands to make them heavier/sturdier. I'm sure sandbags are fine but having a good counterweight or longer boom-arm might be nice.

Of those million GS daw owners, i'd bet a vast majority are on some form of PT's. Lets not forget, Avid is a friggin GIANT! with co's like Steinberg nipping at their ankles, if the entire net worth of Steinberg was representative of Avids financial woes, they'd gleefully skip down to the law firm and write it off with not so much as a second thought. Last earnings i looked up Avid=$800,000,000 nasdaq listed, Steinberg=$18,000,000. don't forget ProTools is a small part of AVID, a lot of their money comes from their video post software as well. And Cubase/Nuendo is probably a large part of Steinberg, which in turn is part of Yamaha.

Been using Cubase for over a decade. Every time I try another DAW I just can't do it. There are some annoying things about Cubase but it sounds better than protools , control room is awesome, and midi creation tools are the best. Besides Steinberg invented half the technology other DAWS use. OK maybe not half, but a decent amount of innovation has come from them. In your opinion?... or do you have something that can quantify such a statement? Yep, completely my opinion. Always seemed to sound thinner to me in pro tools. could be totally wrong. different listening environments etc... maybe it just looks prettier and that messes with my ears but I value my own opinion so it definitely sounds better.

while there are a lot of great DIY mic builds out there, which are extremely complicated, it seems that it would be only fitting to have a few DIY mic stand ideas worthy of holding these great mics. There are plenty of smart dudes here that I'm sure could dream up a decent idea for a mic stand. I for one don't like spending a couple hundred bucks on a mic stand. For that price I can have another CAPI VP26. Much sexier.
Anyone come across any ideas or have any suggestions?

C3 is different from C1 in that it has figure 8 and omni polar patterns as well. other than that, they're the same mic. where did the little arrow end up pointing on the pot? it was recommended to leave it at 9 o'clock. but i'd be interested in trying what you did.

well i completed the mod tonight on both mics. i paused after the first to record against the second and a clone u87. the modded c3 definitely sounds a bit more subdued in the highs than the stock c3, maybe a bit smoother. it doesn't touch the u87. i would say not even close. the bass response isn't there. doesn't have that vintage grainy neumann sound. woulda probably saved my $120 bucks and just sold the mics. oh well, it was a good learning experience and maybe i'll find a use for them somewhere.

winetree, my brother lives in Chino. i have shows in LA several times a year and we always end up going to rancho to climb mount baldy, cucamonga. absolutely awesome area. i'd be there if i didn't have a family to support and could afford a $400,000 house for 1300 sq feet! For now I'll have to be satisfied with visiting as often as possible.

moving to nashville in the summer. checked out texas as well. i don't know what housing prices are by you but there are several areas surrounding nashville that are very reasonably priced and there's no shortage of music. I mostly do corporate live sound/video so i doesn't matter where i live, and the milder winters in nashville, the music scene, the cheaper living seemed like a good solution. we'll see!

svart, thanks for the advice, this clears it up nicely. there's a 6 week backorder time but i'm sure it will be worth the wait!
