Thinking about jumping into slappin some bass. I'm kinda leaning towards a P-Bass, just like how they fit in a mix. But I'm terribly inexperienced with bass, just started thinking and listening to some options. Any suggestions from those that have experience? What genre? rock, sound tracks.

AML DIY rack mount kit has attenuator. 500 series is not DIY and has no option for output attenuator.

So with the SDC, I guess you have to buy the preamp too? if you want the mic modeling to be accurate I would guess you need to. otherwise it's just colored by whatever preamp you have or the models will be off.

Sounds like old technology with a facelift and some new marketing tricks on top of it. Just had this conversation today buying a new clothes washer.... the sales man told that there is no true inovation since 8 years.... oh i don't know, have you seen those new fangled units that dry your clothes after the wash cycle is done? now that's pretty cool!

UAD is sucking lately IMO. As far as I can tell, the only thing different on this version is upgraded converters and the option to get a quad DSP processor. yawn. The current Twin already has optical in. It would be nice if they actually gave us an optical OUT and didn't make this version even more expensive than the already high priced $799. It's a nice interface with great features, but nothing that should make it cost an extra $100 out of the gate.

Rack is simple and eXCELLENT quality. PS is not something I wanted to take on. I have two though. One built by DanD and the other by BradM. Both are great. But at this point, I'm not buying those anymore. Getting the DanD switching power supplies for $79 and his DC cleanup box for my future 500 racks. Is there an advantage to these over the capi? Just no building involved and relatively the same price?

thanks for the answers. i've got a couple open slots in my 500 series rack right now so i'm trying to decide wether i want to go with those or not. the rack versions just look so legit! and we know our mixes are 47% based on what are gear looks like.

anyone have any experience with the hairball 500 series? Are they as easy to build? Do they sound exactly the same as the rack version?

Haha. Musicians are so hard to shop for. I feel bad for our spouses. I got a Strymon Zuma so I was pretty impressed. It's pretty hard to find one in stock right now!

i have had a glitch every now and then running it in streaming mode. (the grand piano patch takes more than my 32gb of RAM if i were to preload it) haha. i just ordered and installed a 1tb SSD to run it off of that so I'll let you know if i have any issues after i play around on that for a while. I'm running an iMac 4k Intel i7 4.0 GHZ CPU. So it's not exactly a slouch.

Looking for a great guitar teacher in the Nashville area. Anyone have suggestions? I'm a good musician so I'm not starting from scratch, and am looking to have a little more personalized feedback than online training provides. Figure I'd finally shell out some money to get someone good.
Thanks!

check out Spectrasonics Keyscape. Best digital one I've played yet. And I'm really picky. The rhodes and other keyboards you get are also better than anything else I've heard.

I have the 16a for my studio and have used Dante for live when I'm using a Yamaha CL 5 with the RIO's. Dante can be a little finicky to get mounted at first but once it's on it's always been solid. I love the 16a for my studio though. Sounds great.

after doing what ever is clever with your tracking, i would suggest doing your mixing through your 2 buss compressor-vp28's/Missing links-ADC capture DAW-DAC-monitors. This is the most accurate(not the cheapest) way to get what you get IMO. is there a reason you hit the vp28's after the compressor? just curious.

I use Cubase but I have them setup as an insert in the first slot of the 2Bus. Usually have VBC or some light compression after these and finish it off with VTM. I'll just create another track with the 2bus as the source when I'm ready to print. I like it setup as an insert so I can easily bypass to hear what's happening.

Hmmm, the triggered drums folks disqualified themselves, as mrholmes said. If you invest an hour or more of time in a mix, you should read the criteria of the contest. Takes a minute... I actually like the clean mix and the open character of your submission, drew571 . I noticed that you did not wipe away the details of drums and bass like most of the others seem to have done (most probably to achieve a more radio pop sound or what?). The ghost notes and the plectrum click of the bass do give the rhythm section a certain character that is lost in most mixes. I always find it sad if i can not even say if the bass player used a plec or fingers when i listen to a mix... And suppressing the ghost notes takes away a good part of the personality of the drums and also the song, if you ask me. There is an easy listening type of thing going on due to them, a touch of indie/alternative, that is missing if you don't let them remain.... OK, a bit of grit might fit the song as well. The clean approach, however, gives the song a kind of honesty and authenticity that i want to believe as a listener. It has something "innocent" and "easy" to it IMO. Thanks smallbutfine, I think the vocal and the background vocals steered me towards the cleaner sound. Didn't want the character in the voice to get lost in too aggressive a mix. He wasn't too angry. Also, I feel like the judges generally pick more pop/clean mixes. Could be wrong.

I don't think it's unrealistic that they listen to all the submissions. I'm positive that they don't listen to the entire song for most though. I would think that 50% or more of the mixes are eliminated within 5 seconds of listening. They probably set them all to play at the chorus, hit play, think "pro or amateur sounding", and divide them up for the next round, of listening. I agree. When I go to check out some of the other mixes, I typically skip or continue listening to the track within the first 5-10 seconds. Wouldn't be surprised if they have an assistant plow through a bunch and leave the top 50 or so. I think they usually do a decent job at the voting. Obviously these are subjective, but usually the winner's mixes are pretty decent.

Thanks. I kinda wished I made it not so clean though. think the song needed to be a little grittier.
