I used my fancy tube mic to send an iphone video to a fried of me playing and singing a Fugazi sung after I'd had a few beers. Kind of funny to plug something like that into a phone.

Thank you cserrano for the plain spoken information, this stuff is internet gold to me. I'm a DIY'er always looking for clues about next steps beyond what I do now, so thanks for sharing.

Sad news. I wish them well. Somehow the USA economy has grown a lot this year? Not really sure how that works but I saw some number put to it like 6.5% growth.
Nice, but the problem is getting the parts. Corona makes this very difficult in the electronic market ....
Oh yeah, for sure. I've had to deep six my ideas to get Ed Anderson and Cinemag parts. I've got a few project pending too that I've had to change directions on.

Wow! Sounds quite a bit different but I like how it sounds. Respectfully, I would get those mics away from that sound hole a bit in future clips. Very impressive!

Typical (my) needs for tons of A/D. Leaving a drum set up and miked all the time, leaving a bunch of synthesizers / instruments hooked up to separate inputs all the time. As well as a permanent vocal channel, guitar, bass, acoustic guitar, etc.

I think it's cool they got the entire effect into a box smaller than the original remote control for the rack 224.

Line Audio CM4 is advertised as a "slightly wide cardioid," good price on those, too. Would like to hear one, sounds good online.
EDIT: EMMR beat me to it!

The closest I've got is my MixPre 6 from Sound Devices. Use it often in conjunction with a video camera for that type of thing. Very often, just two tracks in use.
Just got this little MOTU Ultralite MK 5. If I can add an iPad to it (maybe this year, who knows), might be a pretty cool little mobile recorder.
Until then I'll just be using a laptop.
These rigs will likely get used in the coming months for some out of town projects that are pending. That's about my average with these mobile rigs, once or twice a year.

skav congratulations on the big mic purchase! I'd love to own those three microphones. I have a very similar philosophy to yours, whatever works, no matter what it looks like or how "cool" it is. Don't think you're breaking any rules I think John's main rule is "Don't be a dick." But you can read the sticky if you want more specifics. RGO is generally a pretty friendly environment to post in.

Thanks for doing this, I'm just listening for fun and to be inspired, both of which seem to be happening.
Have a little more respect for my trustworthy little Oktavas now, after a couple of RGO discussions and these tests.
If you need a little less bottom out of them, you can use the Cranborne Camden mic preamp, it's not as heavy as most preamps are, just found this out in some early recording. You trade off a bit of low end but you gain a lot of clarity overall with pick attacks and so on. You can bring some of that back in with the Mojo/Thump circuit (wow, who named this thing? An oyster?)
Lovely collection of instruments!

I'm a little late to the show, while everyone's sweeping up and throwing a way plastic cups I'll keep talking about some SDC mics.
I ended up with Oktava MK 012 for acoustic guitar and KSM 137 for drum overheads.
Would love to own another KM184. That was a special mic, IMO, despite its "limitations." So congrats, on those... partner.

...and they've figured out something no one else has: "Comes with a shock mount to prevent plosives and saliva damage." Never seen a shock mount do that before. ;-) nice catch, Todd! Wow, that really is something. We’re talking TEC award here… Gazundheit!

I got a Gibson stop tailpiece for my Epiphone guitar. It's a low mass kind of thing. Think I'm hearing some subtle-more-good-ness, but there's also a fresh set of strings on there, so don't test me on this.
Also got one of those dorky looking stick-on pick holders that I pasted up near the toggle switch on the upper bout. Sort of like wearing a fanny pack to suit and tie event, but I don't care, this Les Paul is my baby and I like having picks wherever it goes.
The guitar is forcing me not to play power chords and "magic" cowboy chords. There's a lot more jazz and improv, lead lines, coming out so I'm happy where it's pushing me. Having single note fullness and sustain like that is a different thing to conjure with, vs an average guitar.

This is sort of a fun topic about the voice. Mine is naturally dark when I get loud, but I have to be careful. I was singing "A Day In The Life" the other day and actually drove someone out of the room for a few minutes. All the respiratory infections going around right now don't help the case much.
So there's my litmus test. If people are leaving the room when you sing, maybe calm it down a little bit and focus on technique, LOL!
It's all well and good to "forget yourself" and "go for it" but there is some limit to that, the limit of going too far.

Nice discussion, nick8801. One thing I took away is simply knowing that ASR power amp reviews are a thing. I spotted a Niles on there, that I might seek out.
It's good to read engineering insights as well, think I need more coffee :-D

My bass strategy is to leave the strings on until they break, but I realize it's genre-specific what one would do with their bass strings. I've just changed brands from Ernie Ball to Daddario. EB quality has tanked over the last year or so and opening a new pack to find rusty strings was the last straw. Anyway, I find the Daddarios to be quite a bit nicer feel too. But I bought two packs. I'll interleave the strings by playing a set until the get dull and then replacing them with the fresh ones. Before needing to string again, I'll boil the previous set and put them on. Bass strings never really wear out, but they do get gunky and boiling them cleans and returns their tonal brightness. That's a great idea! I might go for a boil when I refret my black bass. That one's got Blue Steel strings on it, and those may or may not have been discontinued on the market by now. Those are the cryogenically treated ones, they have a bigger bottom than regular strings, somehow. I wonder if the boiling will undo any of that cold temperature treatment. Guitar strings seem to develop intonation issues with enough time, I guess bass strings are thick enough not to have that set of issues, far as I can tell. I've never had a problem with Ernie Ball, other than something not their fault. I got a half dozen counterfeit EB packs on ebay. Got a refund from the "buyer protection" program. Guess I'll use them for spares, setups, give away, don't know. They are on the harsh and brittle side of tone, compared to authentic EB strings. Just to prove, I guess, that string quality does matter, to a degree.
