Really good, and simple, explanation! Makes me want to practice a bit today.
When I was in college they tried to get me to learn 4 string inversions with a bunch of extended chord tones. I think that was useful, and I did grow from it. But this is a little easier to stomach for popular music.

I had a 70s big muff box a while back, somebody else threw it away. I was mad at first, then I realized it's just a box.

Honestly I think it would take a lot more spotify plays than that to pay for that shirt, ouch.

Yeah, I use a reverb insert on snare drum. PSP 2445. It does sort of become part of the sound.
I agree with TBone, the mic array gets the '3D'. In my case, a Mid/Side close room pair with a ribbon as the sides. And the drum overheads and close mic panning has to match the ambient pickup for pinpoint accuracy in the drum image. I use a narrowed ORTF SDC pair for overheads.

Clip gain all the time! Drums included, but not just drums. On the last song I was working on I did svart's snare drum thing in different sections, with clip gain.

Todd, I was thinking the same thing! That would be really cool if they go for a plugin with Brainworx or something.

Almost never but hey, I am learning from these great answers. Automating the snare down during softer sections is a huge one. That's the primary thing I do now that really makes a difference. Thanks, just used that in a tune I was working on, smart idea!

Well it looks cool. Haha. I'm not a piano expert but I would want to know if it will play in tune, any cracks in the soundboard, and etc.

Also mrholmes pointed out to me AudioDeluxe has TDR Slick EQ "GE" (VOS Gentlemans version, whatever they call it) for $9!
That is a stupidly good EQ for that price. If you've ever been curious about Tokyo Dawn paid versions this would be the time to take a dip.

Got SAMPLETANKK Rain Piano MK II for $8! That's a great sounding piano. If you use "presummer" code you can get anything they sell for 90% off! I was also looking at Black Grand and White Grand, thinking about it, code is gud until the 8th. Whoa! Thanks for the heads up. I've been sort of falling out of love with the few piano libraries I've been using. Haven't heard of Sampletekk before, so I'm excited to check these out. I'm really chuffed with them too. Like wow, this price, and that sound? OK will probably be a first reach set of pianos for me.

Almost never but hey, I am learning from these great answers. Honestly, the things I mention are options that I sometimes use. Many times I don't feel the need to do anything beyond making the drums make sense. This thread and the Pop music thread are making me want to be a more inventive/skillful mixer. To be able to transform sounds rather than just present them as great sounding tracks. I'm probably going to need to dust off the FX folder instead of this "natural" thing I've been on for seemingly a year now.

Dua Lipa, Nicki Manaj, Britney I can get behind. I'll have to check out more Trey Songs since this thread. Had a Frank Ocean phase with Orange. A few years ago, I had a "moment" with Justin Timberlake's Man of the Woods album. I guess I'm not supposed to say that in certain crowds but this one seems like it would understand. I don't know if Diplo counts but I was a huge Major Lazer fan for a while.
On the sort of alternative/pop side I really like Dirty Projectors 5 EPs project, mixed by Jimmy Douglas, those are reference mixes for me. Seemingly impossible combination of sounding super clear and super loud. I don't know how they get that much level without sounding ugly. They started as an indie rock band or whatever but some of their newer materials are in the pop direction.
Grimes is pop, right? She was sort of a sea change for me when Visions dropped, changed the way I write music.
Most pop I can't listen to, as a genre, but there are standouts, still.
Here's a BlackPink song I like:
The tempo/feel change in the chorus percussion gets me big time

Really nice chord changes. Vaguely reminds me of a song like Steely Dan's "Josie." I'm always happy when music can be complex and not boring.

That was nice! I'm glad he asked about the computer, the history of the house, and so on. Not just a sweaty gear fest the whole time. I'm inspired by Vance too, mostly the amount of work he's done and the work ethic that goes into it.

I do this too, I think I'm going to have to re-track half of my next release with new performances because the overdubs are too loose. Probably will start with some sort of click/guide track.
Like you said I hope I don't lose the vibe with the new performances.
I get stuck in the writing while recording thing. The idea of having to learn the song and re-perform is daunting to me, but I think it needs to happen. It's always more fun to write a new song than learn an old one so it's a bitter pill, somewhat. Feels like work.

The Warm surprised me too. Not going to buy one, but it was right up there with them. This would all go to crackers if any of us had the 4 mics, there's no substitute for personal time with these things. From my experience with the WA84, if that's enough to judge a brand on, I know pretty well that their mics are not quite right for me.

I thought the clones fell apart a bit with his mix EQ, and the original stayed tighter. I bet you could do better with a digital EQ than the console he was using, if I had to guess, to treat each one as its own sound separately.

I talked with a mastering engineer recently and he mentioned his 5088 nevé console has given him a glue and cohesion that he had been searching for the last 30 years. He kept mentioning 96 volts. So I guess consoles still do have that sonic advantage over a vast assortment of outboard sonically in the extra headroom given, I think. I'm jelly of you.
In any case, congrats on the purchase, that’s friggin awesome Bat!
To me, it is old technology.
When creativity hits me, something is not working.... what a PITA...
That was the most frustrating moment when a friend worked with me in his SSL 4kE Studio.
It's an error-prone technology, special with HW PB.
I can have all the sound I need, ITB today. I don't go back anymore Have done enough ABX blind-tests to know that 95% of the differences are just psychology.
To your credit, holmes, I believe Mr. Valentine has also gone ITB for a while now, made a ton of videos about it. So he would seem to agree with you. Hence the big fancy custom console being sold off to market.

Rondo Music delivers again! My main basses are SX, they have "good bones."
I got some new gear today, a Yamaha PCY155 e-cymbal, which is a nice boost for my e-kit. The only remaining piece I need now is a better snare pad.

I didn't like the Warm WA-84, personally, sent them back. Serrano is about 500% more up my alley just based on what I know without hearing them.

Paul Johnson just died from Covid, a seminal Chicago house musician. I've been profoundly inspired by some differently able musicians, stick to 3 I guess
