Ha. I literally just pulled up RGO to post a link to this video. It was an enjoyable watch.
After I watched the video, I also had a question. If you go to 18:34, where he is discussing gear in his racks, you can see a pair of some kind of Pultec or Pultec clone. They are racked below the Massive Passive and above the Unfairchild. Does anybody have any idea what those are?

It's a fun spot! And Sputnik had an impact on the chosen path for my studio.
The vibe is important as the gear.

The knob locations don't match though. It's gotta be something else. It has similar knob locations to a Pultec EQP type.

I've been on the lookout for a higher end Pultec EQP style in a 2u chassis. $4k for the Pulse though... It'd be nice to find something under $2k.

That studio has convicted me of wasting dollars on outboard when I could have gone totally ITB.

Powell's approach is seductive, and has won me over. Two events recently converged for me: 1) my bassist/consiglieri casually dropped via text message that our sound is old-school rock, so our recordings should be too (it's a shame that you have a pile of nice analog gear, all unplugged), and 2) I rediscovered Vance's excellent pureMix content, and watched all of it- more than once. As a result, I've reversed my 2020 decision to go ITB and am investing in some new hardware (Audioscape D-Comp, Heritage 609A, Fatso, and more). There's new interfaces coming too, to take advantage of vanilla Pro Tools going 64x64 I/O. Hello hardware inserts! Fun times- and expensive, but sometimes you just gotta say WTF. I am thankful to the rock gods that I did not go crazy and sell anything!
Also, while I have moved on from teaching sites such as Mix With The Masters (it's an interesting site, just not to my taste anymore- not enough rock-related content), pureMix keeps me hooked due mostly to Vance. I also enjoy Fab, Greg Wells, and others. IMO Fab has created the best tutorial-based community out there. Vance's "Start to Finish" work is particularly killer and inspiring.

That was nice! I'm glad he asked about the computer, the history of the house, and so on. Not just a sweaty gear fest the whole time. I'm inspired by Vance too, mostly the amount of work he's done and the work ethic that goes into it.

In the year 1999, the band Jars of Clay’s management team had hired me and my brother in law to create an “Enhanced CD” (think: website on a CD-ROM) called STRINGTOWN. At some point in the project, I felt compelled to pick up the phone and call the engineer who was responsible for the live recordings on the audio portion of the project. It was some guy named VANCE POWELL.
He and I had a cool chat which lasted about an hour, and later that summer, I met him in person at a live Jars of Clay concert in Tulsa, OK.
All these years later, here he is... same guy. Same beard... (Well, back then, he had it dyed, either blue or green...) Same gift of just “being himself” and making solid recordings.

Awesome! I'm with you all the way. The Hardware inserts on/in Pro Tools and real gear are my lifeblood here. So immediate, so organic, so simple. Once you get things set up, it will revolutionize the way you work. Good luck with it!!

I was visiting Southern Ground studios and mentioned to house engineer Brandon Bell a track I thought was amazing. I was having difficulty getting enough volume on my album and youtube video posts and admired a track called "I'll Forget You" by Peter Bradley Adams.
It has massive volume and yet perfect low level detail. I figured maybe it was an analogue production. Brandon mentioned that Vance Powell produced it. That alone earned my whole hearted respect.

PureMix contacted me about making a video when they were first coming in to shoot Vance. As much as I could have used the money, I wound up telling them it would be pointless since my approach is virtually identical to his and Vance has always been able to finish any sentence I started.
It's so nice to see our old recording techniques being demonstrated.

His control room looks like it has really bad acoustics. I wonder if it's hard to mix in there. Obviously, he's figured it out somehow, but wow.
