Probably smart to target Softube, they don't ever seem to fall completely flat.
It seems that the Overloud compressors would be worth looking into. You get the 2A and the 3A in a bundle.
Also the Brainworx Opto is just dandy, and not hard to get cheap.
I really like the Black Rooster VLA-3A. They do the 2A and the 1176 also but I haven't tried those. But the 3A is slick.
You could also get the Empirical Labs Arousor which has an Opto mode that sounds good. As well as being just a Distressor in the box.
And if you're a traditionalist you could just grab Waves CLA or Slate, I tend to go for the more esoteric options.
People are going to recommend Fuse optical plugins I haven't tried them yet. But the hype is real. I use their guitar pedals.

If you have Izotope RX I think that will have you sorted as well.

It's nice of them to update their plugins per user feedback. They finally got the noise out of the Greg Wells 'Centric' plugins but it took them a few years of people complaining and being irritating.

I bought into the group buy at IK multimedia…. Grabbed the Hammond after demoing it Cheers Wiz I'm trying to do that within the month. I think it's almost 12 products for the price of one right now? Pretty silly, great software.

Oh no you didn't! Crack open a Miller High Life! It's the champaigne of beers, and all you will be able to afford after that console. Congratulations, I know that was a long time coming.

There was a nice fellow who did a blind A/B/C with rule tec, UAD, and a real HW pultec, for Youtube. The interesting thing was the UAD was indistinguishable in his particular test. Rule Tec is excellent, but I thought that was interesting. Also, if anyone has a $25 voucher at Plugin Alliance, you could get SSL 9000 J, or Bettermaker EQ for $25 or $15 respectively. The Bettermaker is a desert island "clean, with extras" Pultec for me. Rule tec or UAD will do the vintage, Bettermaker the modern. Very interesting. There is a very big hardware/software test with clips on sweetwaters site I think and the plugs just didn't quite do it in those tests... hm. That thread was a big reason that RuleTec became popular. It did really well in those blind listens! That's back around when I purchased Rule Tec. Somebody on "the other" site added a bunch of plugins in a thread about it, using the same clips as sweetwater. I agree with you, a lot of the software shone poorly in that particular shootout. The hardware seemed to have a clear team advantage.

I wish had the time (or the initiative for that matter) to do two mixes of the same song… one all UAD plugs wherever I use plugs and one without. I have enough of each to do whatever but, I am not that motivated. Lol I'm kind of with tkaitkai on this one. I just use whatever is convenient and works, like the UAD 1176, even though it may not be the best plugin I have. At some point you have to put the salt in the turkey and put it out on the table and not talk about what kind of salt you bought. Haha. That is a pretty elaborate metaphor even for me.

I got a Tube Amp Doctor (TAD) Premium Selected 12AY7 / 6072A for my main vocal microphone Claire. The old JAN GE I had in there fuzzed out on me.
This is a good tube! Very quiet, has more body (bottom end) than the JAN GE. Maybe not quite as smooth in the mids? I don't know, but I'm happy with it.
Sounds closer to 'real' 251 clips I've studied now due to the low end extension.
Got the tip on this toob from paying attention to Chad Kelly. These are the benefits of lurking around the forums and gear sites.

When I used to listen to Led Zeppelin IV this sound was drilled in my head, but a lot of that has to be the quality of the band and their production. Still very much one of those hidden gem mojo pieces, that's not widely cloned yet, somehow. There's not, say, DIY Helios kits that I'm aware of.
I have the UAD plugin too but I haven't used it in a long time, even though it's good.

I think there was another big thread about this a month or so ago if you dig down a bit.
Short answer for me is they are "one of the good ones" So they have some standouts, some that are the same as many other comparable plugs, and some that aren't worth using.
But the cost of entry is about twice as expensive as, say, buying Plugin Alliance, due to higher plugin prices, and the DSP required to run them.
I don't use mine more or less than any other brand of plugins I own. I'm glad to have them but I could do without them also.
If you want specific recommendations, I've been using Pultec, Fairchild, 1176, Neve 1073, and API 500 EQ quite a bit lately. The SSL strips also get some use in my drum template.
If you do enter, be prepared to go down the rabbit hole and spend a ton of money. Anything that exists native (Sonnox, many of the brainworx ones, etc) buy native.
I don't really rate the guitar amps from them so I would skip those. Unison technology also gets a 'Meh' from me. So I just use them like regular mix plugins.

Wow, there was some serious satisfaction in watching that video. I feel bad for someone that is a habitual liar, they are bound to suffer negatively from it, from their own action, what the buddhists call karma. It's not a good way to live. But I'm glad your amp is working.

Maybe you could get CAPI and Gary Barnett and or Scott Liebers to do an alternate 'vintage' API mojo? I like GAR op amps a lot and I also like the CAPI CA-0252 just as much.
Also like the IAA Helios or Quad Eight idea, matt is your man

Fascinating. The U67 sounds kind of odd next to all these 87s, but it probably wouldn't if it was the only thing you heard. Yes, the Stam mic has an odd brightness to it.

I finally put together my Dachman RK12 mic and it sounds great! Going to do a second one ASAP.
Also got a Behringer Xenyx 1202FX mixer, not sure why, just to have a small mixer for various things. The mic pre is surprisingly good, not too far off from the MOTU M4 mic pre I compared it to.

If you want something cheap-ish to have fun with I would also look out for a DBX 160X or XT, or an ART Pro VLA 2. They are in a similar category to the RNC, but different sounds.
