I have UAD's Pultecs and Manley Massive Passive and probably a few others i've forgotten about. Plugin Alliance is having a $29.99 sale. The regular price is listed as $299. I do a very natural style of recording in the Americana/Folk-Rock styles. Should I bother with it? ( I know it's cheap, but if I really don't need it I'd rather put that toward something practical, like an SM57). What have your thoughts been as you’ve been demoing it, Martin?

Doesn't it stop working when the subscription expires? Don't think that's right at all. You just lose support and have to pay more the next time you want to upgrade. Although, if I hadn't been a loyal customer and kept my auto renew on, I could have saved $100 Last I recall, there was a kind of setup where you keep a perpetual license of whatever the most current release is when you stop paying for the sub (more expensive) and a setup where you don’t, you’re just getting the sub license while you’re actively paying for it (cheaper).

Always sage electrical advice from svart. One of the cool things about the job I started recently is that I work next to some master rework techs and can pick their brains on tips/tricks. One thing that’s new to me is soldering under a microscope. Weird at first but now I love it. I don’t do any of the heavy lifting at work, just soldering leads onto test points for thermal chamber measurements. But the whole reason I ever became an EE was because I started messing with my audio gear and modding/building things. So, look out. One day you might be building a compressor and the next you’ll find you’ve gone and signed up for a bunch of math classes! To the OP, it’s a good move. You’ll have fun and learn stuff and have some real pride and ownership in your gear. And, personally, I find soldering to be therapeutic. Put on some great tunes, get the solder flowing and zen out.

I’m kinda smitten with the VSL Bluthner. Sounds damn nice to me and a lot different from the C7 in Keyscape that I use a lot. On sale through today, I might grab it.

Hey alright. It held up in a (quick) blind test so I bought it.
I thought I was hearing sonics with more life to them, better imaging across the instruments and a better, less-flat presentation of transients. Just ‘better’ all around. Put it on acoustic guitars, bass, and drums of a track and made all the same cuts and boosts with bx console_N (my go to Neve), bounced, RMS matched the bounces and then compared blind. I heard all the same stuff blind.
I'll be glad to have this arrow in the quiver.

I love this whole thing, but man the Cory Henry stuff is just ridiculous. That dude is otherworldly on the keys. Skip to 5:50 if you want to hear him on the Keyscape C7 grand.

I use XLN Addictive Keys. The upright in particular. It sounds pretty close to my Yamaha U3. I prefer the real thing but the samples make tuning a lot quicker. :-) The only thing that bothers me is that sampled pianos are available to everyone. What sets my sound apart from any other? The U3 is not a perfect piano and my tuning skills are not perfect either but the character it gives is unique. The XLN Addictive Keys was the closest I could find to the real thing. I’ve actually got a license for this and never used it. I liked the Keyscape upright better in samples and have been playing it ever since. But this is a good reminder that I should fire up that Addictive upright VI and take it for a spin.

I’m demoing this while it’s on sale. It’s good. I never tried the original, which seems to have had some issues. V2 seems well-behaved. I’ll need to compare to my go to general purpose DSP inductor EQ, Brainworx console_N, but this thing has a lot of life to it. The saturation is really nice. I dig it.

I was all juiced up to check out new piano VIs. I listened to most of the suggestions here and liked stuff about all of them. But I’m not feeling like any of them really give me things that Keyscape doesn’t. I guess I’ll just hang there, I’m pretty dang happy with it.

Plugin Alliance - Any plug for $29.99. Picked up MusEQ this morning. BFD1-2999 Wait, I remember trying (and then buying) MusEQ based on you saying how much you liked it on mixbus. Am I crazy?

Wait, run native as in you don't need UAD DSP at all? Am I about to start considering UAD plugins an option again for the first time in years? M1 native coding. Ahhh, gotcha. Just the M1/Rosetta thing. Not “running natively” DSP-wise.

Ordered a pair of 560A. Was gonna wait till Black Friday stuff (cause last year they ran a big promotion on dbx) but given how effed the supply chain is I figured I grab them while they were in stock. My SW rep gave me a good quote and they price lock for 30 days so if they go on sale for BF I can still get that price.
Also looking for an RNC. Ordered one from Full Compass but their Reverb page was erroneously listing them as in stock when they actually weren’t.

Always sounds like heavy 1176 to me. Thought I remember reading he used a Rev A a lot on vocals.
