Hi, I've noticed the "Tracking Compressors $8000 budget" thread - and could not resist asking: what about an under $500 budget compressor. Some mentions... the range of prices are enormous. I have my small home project studio - just tracking myself
I have a LTL Silver bullet that I always track with - and wonder if I should just stick with my software compressors - or give an inexpensive hardware compressor a try - inserting it into the inserts of the Silver Bullet I would be using it to track Male Vocal and a 5-string banjo ... (and less likely a bass and electric guitar). Thanks

I'm thinking of either a RNC ("clean"), or RNLA ("color") Both nice units. Chris

RNC/ RNLA
OK - I looked it up - Really Nice Compressor or Really Nice Leveling Amplifier
Which one? Edit removed bad joke - also I did find a YouTube video (2011) from Front End audio comparing both

RNC all the way. I've said it before but that thing could cost 6x as much and the price would be justified.
Golden Age LA3A is nice, too, but kind of finicky depending on your sonic goals. The Warm and KT 1176s might be worth looking at.
Lots of 500 series stuff that can be had in that price range, new and used. Tonelux TX5C comes to mind.

Used dbx 160x.
You can find them for $300 or so. Maybe $400 if you’re in a hurry.
Like the SM57 of compressors. Maybe not your favorite but it’ll always have a place and it’s a legit pro tool.
Put it this way, nobody will ever see yours and say “whoa, look at that!” But YOU will go into big studios all the time and say “hey, I have that!”

Safe Sound Audio P1.
Invisible compression. You won't know how colored every other compressor is until you use this -- it's annoying.

You won’t find a safesound i don’t think, too in demand.
I’ll take a dbx 160 or pair of 903’s in an fs900 over an RNC any day.

Klark Teknik 2A with a tube swap and kenetek upgrade gets a lot of use over here for around that price point. Sounds damn good.
That is - if you can find one.

If you are handy with a soldering iron and have a 500 series rack, the CAPI FC526 and JLM LA500A are great options. I’m sure the DIYRE OLA5 is nice as well.
DBX 160X/160XT, Aphex Expressor, SPL Dynamaxx, Tonelux TX5C, Ashly SC50 or SC55…there are some interesting options out there sub $500 for sure

That looks juicy - but I don't have 500 format power box - wouldn't that be needed?
As for a soldering iron... I'd probably solder my fingers together... Clumsy yes, handy no.
Lots of interesting suggestions - There's a big world of compression out there.

FWIW I'll probably go RNLA, since I like the "thickening"/coloration on the various vocal clips I've heard. Chris

Chris Agreed or an RNC with an ART Pro VLA, the RNLA has its own character which was a bit hit or miss but I liked it personally. It's not lacking in terms of sonic quality though and definitely wouldn't consider the RNLA to be prosumer equipment, just another flavour.

There are 3 aphex 651 in classified. I have no knowledge regarding these aphex units, but those are listed as 661's. Not sure how much of a difference that actually makes.

The difference is the tube circuit included in the 661 for color. You can bypass that if you like and then you've basically got a 651 as I understand it.

I second (seventh?) the dbx 160's, Ashley SC50, ART-VLAs for sure. It's been years but I remember the Aphex Compellor was great for busses.
If you're looking for smash, the dbx 118 (and 117/119 I believe) are great. Old consumer gear - RCA in/out - but truckloads of character if you want it.
