I’ve tried a lot of stuff and always come back to an original Sennheiser e602 on inside kick. I like it just inside a little inside the port hole. Outside kick changes from time to time but I think the sE X1D is really great, especially for under $100…because all my alternatives (M380, R44, U47FET, D12, CM7 FET S) are 10 to 30 times more expensive

Picked up a few things at an estate sale...Tapco 4400 spring reverb, a bunch of Mogami and Fishman Asterope cables and snakes, a big box of percussion, keyboard stand, nice Atlas style mic stand, and a couple SKB rack cases...
Separately bought a Catalinbread Karma Sutra pedal, one of many pedals that'll just sit on the shelf and maybe someone will use it once every 5 years 😛

I live in East Nashville, but managed to not take any damage from the flood or the recent tornado...or the heavy winds this year. The streets up or down from me, not so lucky. It does seem risk of high winds, tornadoes, and heavy rain fall is more common than it was when I moved here 15 years ago. I'd also so that with the rapid growth of the city there hasn't been much done to help drainage.
But there was a tornado that destroyed my grade school in Cincinnati...so there's a chance for a weather event anywhere.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I’ve always wanted a G&L SC-2 but those seem to hold their value a little better I had an sc-3 . It was a little heavier. Man it was a sweet guitar. what made it stand out was it was Bananna yellow in colour. Classic guitar to use in church. I even had the Pastor/Minister say could i find another guitar to use in a different colour. Nope was my response. What a rebel I used to be. I love the Himalayan Blue SC-2

Snag a lot of microphones for $100...original Rode NT1, Shure SM58, Shure SM57 and another cheap-o. Going to tinker around with the Rode and might sell the SM57 and SM58 so it'll be "free"...don't really have a use for them

The G&L was cheap because it doesn't have a case and it's missing the tremolo arm...and G&L is currently out of stock for this era. I did order a new set of knobs since one is stripped. Also in the bridge position it sounds very thin, but wiring looks ok? In position 2 (bridge and middle) it sounds like you'd expect. I also picked up a Benchmark MPS-420. I have a MPS-400 and I use it a lot, it works great with ribbon microphones in particular, but I want to experiment with the built in mixer for submix some mics to "tape"...although it doesn't have a phase flip which would have been handy for top and bottom microphones. Probably wouldn't' be hard to install them...or just wire some XLRs out of phase 😆 To be clear, I’m stoked for you on a killer deal on a great guitar. Just lamenting more generally that the market under appreciates these guitars. Yeah, I know what you mean. I’ve always wanted a G&L SC-2 but those seem to hold their value a little better

Picked up a 2000 G&L Legacy Special for $400 this morning. Previous owner thought he did me a favorite by fixing a scratchy pot by flushing it down with WD40 so now it stinks 😆but I’ll get it cleaned up

Daking FET II / 91579 works really well…but I don’t usually compress acoustic guitars in a strictly acoustic/bluegrass scenario. Sometimes the slow release thing is cool on the Highland BG-1 but that’s a pretty specific sound where it’s really more of the “box tone” than the compression (to my ears anyway)
But for strumming guitars in a pop song the Daking is great

I've owned the SAMAR VL37 and now own a pair of AL95. They're both gorgeous sounding mikes; the AL95 has deeper low end and lower distortion (so less of that vintage ribbon sound). As Sean notes above, they're sensitive to RF. Mark fitted my VL37s with mu-metal cups on the transformers which helped immensely; unfortunately the AL95 body is too small to allow for that. Also unfortunately, I didn't find out until after I had sold the VL37s! I’ll have to ask Mark if he could do this for my pair! I’d like to be able to use them more

I have a pair of Samar VL37’s and while I do like the way they sound, their sensitivity to RF has made them unusable a lot of times. Same with AL95s…which I bought for a remote project a few years ago and they were so noisy I immediately sold them. Area/location specific, I’m sure, but at least in my studio and in a remote location where it was literally the only house in several miles, I couldn’t use them.
Also, sometimes a ribbon mic can be a bit “chewy” or unnaturally thick. I’d say 95% of the time I end up using a KM84, but there are a few times where I’ll grab a Coles or a Royer 121 or the Samar if it’s an especially bright instrument

I actually think they feel it is unecessary and a large cost to them. They don't see the mic as what it costs them, They see it as income. That is the correct assessment and the way business is normally conducted. Write down cost is part of the ‘cost of doing business’ and how it should be seen. But that’s only with regards to high profile companies looking to maximize sales in the broader market. IMHO…. Boutique companies should NOT be succumbing to this practice but building market segments more slowly for the long-term. One customer at a time. Boutique microphone makers like Heiserman or FLEA or Signal Arts or OPR (the list goes on) are well-served by peer review but not by giving away hand-crafted limited supply rare tools of our trade. But that’s just my philosophy on it. Tim being the manufacture of the capsule of the Flea 251 makes him a "special case" I would say...I would think a company would appreciate that level of commitment to excellence.

The powered Avantones also have an added advantage if you or another singer doesn't like to use headphone they can be use a monitor...singing over a speaker at low volume can sometimes really help pitch. Headphones are weird.

Jim Williams designed the circuit for that microphone and he posted several other mods, I bet if you emailed him he’d give you a run down if you want to take it further I've noticed most of his comments on that. Reducing polarization voltage looks like the #1 additional option. Funny I don't think I've seen him address the lack of treble compensation anywhere, maybe he digs the high boost? From an old Jim post: to cure the excessive k-87 capsule's 12k hz peaks, I changed the 470 pf roll-off caps and ended up with 3300 pf. That tamed the 12k peaks and gave the mic a very U-87'ish quality I'm enjoying.

The lowly orig Rode NT2. $100, looks new in the case. Someone had it with them on a session. Yeah, that’s a lot of air. Those things are u67/87 type capsules but no built in treble compensation, no wonder they’re so bright. Did the compensation mod, 2 resistors and a cap. Seems ok, we’ll see, will shoot against the TLM67. Well, I’d say if you like the Stam I’d hold on to that because I don’t believe they are making them any more and would be hard to find. Everything else if it’s not essential to your workflow I’d sell because they are easily replaceable

I’ve slowly been chipping away at populating these insert and direct out PCBs for my Auditronics. Guess the DIP8 version of one of line drivers isn’t available so had to go SMD. Man, making these little adapter boards makes this take 5 times as long. Oh well.

Curiosity got the best of me and ordered an Advanced Audio CM800T One of the few tube mics of there’s that I haven’t tried. I'm interested to hear how it compares to some of the other brighter microphones I have...and one thing that's challenging for me when I've used C800G's in the past is when the artist is singing and playing an instruments there's A LOT of bleed...so the figure 8 pattern was appealing although I'm sure it really changes the frequency response of the microphone. I might even see if I can't borrow a C800G from someone to do an A/B comparison.

I think the advantage of hardware inserts in Pro Tools is they are before automation…and once your mix is done you can “commit” those tracks that have hardware automation and have all your individual stems in the length of the song, instead of having to print each element of the mix in real time to make the stem
Of course, this will be “pre” your mix buss stuff but, still, much more convenient/quick
Yes, it’s sucks either way. I hate stems. But understand the necessity/desire for them
