Every few years, I do the ITB to mixer comparison test, just to do it, and see where things have come. I usually use simple Americana rock tracks, (mostly what I do) that are 24 tracks or less. My guidelines are simply that I will use the exact same gear as inserts, on both the ITB box mix, and the Console mix! If I don't have the same plugs, as my outboard, or vice a versa, then I don't use them. This way a direct (or close to it) comparison can be made. As I said, these are very straight ahead mixes, with not a lot of junk on them. I start with the ITB box mix, and I usually spend a day on it, and return to it in the morning, to make sure it's as good as I want it. And to be honest, I'm usually very happy with the results. Once that's done, I'll start from scratch, buss everything out to the console (or my summing setup, which I've done both) insert the outboard as it was on the ITB mix, set all gear as it was in the other mix, and go.... Once again, no rush, I mix for a day, take my time, and return to it to print the next morning. I print it, and then do the comparisons. As good as I thought the ITB mix sounded, once played against the Console version, there is NO COMPARISON! It's inevitable that the Console version, not only sounds bigger, wider, and just plain better, it also FEELS better! I think it's more visceral, emotional, makes ya wanna move, tap your feet, etc... At least this is my findings, and I've done this almost every year for about 8 years now. Would love to hear the comparison if possible... cheers Wiz

That’s such a pain in the ass lol. Buying old tech feels weird to me too…but that’s definitely a cheaper way to do it. Cubase is sounding nicer by the minute. If Luna would get their act together and do the Hw insert stuff, I’d be there already. or.... ditch the hardware??? Is that a possibility...it's a lot cheaper....what hardware do you HAVE to have to mix? cheers Wiz

Alright, I think I'm getting to a point where I can move forward with this. Of course it's not EXACT but the vibe is close enough for me, and I'm not trying to produce a covers record or anything. drive.google.com/file/d/1PfEsmskjBA2lsb42EwurD7ZKs9tTgo4Y/view?usp=share_linkM201 about 24" away, through 828es pre then cascading into two API pres, each with the 2:1 transformer option to soften things up a bit. Might be a little too much saturation this way. Then UADx with two and a half notches taken out of the high shelf and HPF at 60. Then a bit more surgical cutting at 174 and 535Hz. UADx 1176AE with medium attack and release, 20:1 reducing about 5dB max. Then finished off with UADx Studer A800 - this one's not strictly necessary but fun to play around with. So just like drbill said - dynamic mic into a Neve and then back it up a bit. I think there's a bit too much room tone in this one that you can hear particularly on the bass notes but that's getting real nitpicking. It sounds good. Now, if only we could really determine which dynamic Tom favored in his home studio then I'd be REALLY chuffed. BRB going to try to track down Ryan Ulyate. My future plans include a Heritage 1073 and a Sennheiser 441 rental. Sounds really great Cheers Wiz

Play music into it from an external source and record it….rather than using it as an externally inserted piece of gear…just to isolate the clocking sync issues

In the real world it depends on speaker, room and position, in theory angled. Yes…mine are straight …they sound great in that position….but I built my room from the ground up and spent a lot of time positioning the speakers etc cheers Wiz

We all hear things are own way, there are people I respect , you, wiz, Quinn: who speak positively about Luna. I think great , glad it’s working for you. I found I reacted against it: could just be me ! Hey Kcat what was it that you didn't like? cheers Wiz

I use ozone on every mix Voice de noise Mouth de click Cheers Wiz Ozone only on master bus? Or elsewhere. I did a mix of a live recording last night for a wedding band client releasing a teaser video. The board mix they sent had zero life. Tried Ozone Exciter on drum bus and it really worked like a charm to liven up a very well played but not well recorded drum part. Then I figured hey, let's do some gated reverb (the song was David Bowie's Let's Dance) and again... how about Neutron gate? That's what got me on this. Ozone on the master bus cheers Wiz

sounds to me like moisture on the capsule....or the capsule needing a good clean.....my U87i did a similar thing once.... I put it under a light globe for a while and it was good...
If you give it a good old plosive on purpose does it cut out completely?
cheers

I really enjoyed that... more...more.. more (why do I do this all myself....8).....) cheers Wiz Well, doing it all yourself is fun for sure…and there’s definitely a place for both. I’ve just come to the conclusion you have to know which songs to do which way… Can I ask a quick stupid question ? say the song is Am F C G how do you write that in Nashville number.... is it 6 4 1 5? I would write it vi IV I V.... ( upper case, major, lower case minor) cheers Wiz

Does it pick up many room reflections? Or is that not much of a problem?
Nothing that is a problem, but my room is pretty well sorted out. cheers Wiz

If you have ever been a part of... or in a room with people who can sing 3 and 4 part harmony....man it's a spiritual experience....
I always concentrated more on being a harmony singer than say a lead guitar player (though I can do that) it got me more live gigs.. over some really really good players who couldn't sing.... a lot of people can sing lead vocals, but not harmonise well....and if you can you often get the gig.
cheers

Tours were the only source of net income prior to the late '60s and albums. The rise of the iPod wiped out what hadn't been destroyed by the crap packaging of CDs. I have often wondered if the period from say 62 through to Napster/Spotify/Apple Music was just a really green period for the recorded music industry. The likes of which weren't before and most likely won't come again..... cheers Wiz

Shame to see him go.... I liked him, and when we zoom called that time he was a cool dude. He is very intelligent...and obviously under some sort of stress/pressure....I wish him all the best. plug ins vs hardware is like arguing about chocolate or vanilla (although everyone knows chocolate is better..... 8) ..... ) each to their own. There are times I have sung the virtues of both... owned plenty high end of both....and made music with both. Also everyones needs are different.. .solo acoustic guitar guy.. vs.... drum kit and full band guy....for example.... Again Dan, if you are reading this... good luck mate and always here if you want to talk.. you can get hold of me at my website www.peterknightmusician.comcheers Wiz

also: i played and sung very quietly. so hard work for the chain. Cool Stuff.... If you really want to get into the singing and playing and capturing the acoustic and voice live... a pair of fig 8 mics are your best bet..IMHO Like your test I could never minimise the phase enough using the SDC LDC approach. the rejection of the fig 8 is fantastic.... cheers Wiz
