How would you guys rate the Revive mods, in comparison to Black Lion? Generally? Chris I had a pair of dbx 163s and a aphex 320a both had revive mods….both were excellent

Conceptually, for the same reason you'd tracks through a hardware piece. Why not just track through some hardware? I’m all for ITB mixing but IME it only works to an acceptable level if the bed tracks have some analog sauce baked into them. Plug-ins aren’t particularly great at adding analog mojo, so at least tracking through hardware gets that part done and then mixing ITB you get some action out of plug-ins when they have some analogue tone to act on. Perhaps you don’t find this to be true? We all hear things differently - I do understand that. It's not just tracking through the plugs... which you can with the DSP version...and that's very cool.... especially something like c -suite noise remover on vocals...or the awesome verbs as comfort reverbs...but you can monitor them...also without your DAW running...eg band practice which is something I do. I really think if people can, and the system would work for you.. give the Apollo and a satellite a try... with LUNA.... it's such an easy and great sounding system at a reasonable price.... Of course everyones needs are different...but if it suits it works... (remember I had a fully modded delta console and huge amount of really great outboard gear...so I have a lot of experience with that as well....) cheers Wiz

Thanks for the update. Sounds like a good value. Curious to hear your thoughts on how the AD sounds now... would also be great if it could improve the microphone preamps, hi-z inputs and headphone amps which are mediocre at best on my x6 to my ears.... Good point, the headphone amps on my x8 are to me its weakest link. I added a custom built dual headphone amp a couple of interfaces before the Apollo... good investment.. Interesting point about the mods bringing the design up to spec.... cheers Wiz

Just got it back this morning...and have been super excited to try it out! I get it set up enough to take a preliminary listen...and my phone rings. It's my neighbor writhing in pain because he'd just called 911. So I ran over and he had just about cut his big toe off with the lawnmower. It was not what one would describe as "good." Once the ambulance left, I rejoined my pursuit of sonic bliss (or something that will make me some money) and pushed play...and the image is slightly to the left. Ruh Roh. I'd just been using the Hilo this morning and everything was totally fine. But now, image shifts to the left. So the first thing I did was take the monitor controller out of the path and when I did that, everything was fine and centered. After about 30 minutes, I figure out the $65 Mogami Gold cable on the right monitor out just all of a sudden has less output. Once I replaced that, I could finally switch back and forth between the Apollo modded DA and the Hilo. I should just get this out of the way: the Apollo no longer has that "bite." (This is all without the Trinnov in the path.)
And they are super, super close. They sound like brothers, honestly. The Apollo has a little tighter bottom end - and I would say objectively tighter. Listening to Sade "No Ordinary Love." It has this sub synth part all the way through the song. Here's what I mean by "tight." (I'm typing as I listen) The Hilo sounds like it has more sub information, but it sounds like it's smearing a bit. That's probably the wrong word, but it's like slightly out of focus. Sometimes I can get the sense listening to thaat synth bassline that I'm not hearing the attacks as well as on the Apollo. Like it has a tiny bit of diffusion on it...or like when you use a linear EQ and you lose attack on the bottom. BTW - all of this is nitpicking. Both of these units are just killer. As for the top end, the Apollo is still brighter. More presence. It's just enough that you notice it. If I had ONE complaint with the Hilo, it's that it can sound a little boring and flat. Which - hey - you want your DA flat, right? The Apollo is just a tad lifted in comparison. Again - nitpicking. Honestly, I'd rather err on the side of mixes ending up a little less bright...so that doesn't bother me. And which one is more correct? No idea. Again - I'm really talking about small, small differences. I'm not totally sure I could pick these blind...but that's what I think I hear. If I had to say which was the winner for the top, I'd probably say the Hilo handles it a little more effortlessly. I do love the Hilo - considering it's below $2k for a used one, it's obviously cheaper than buying an Apollo and then the mod. But if I can get away with one interface - just to cut down on all the digital ins and outs etc...and pocket the money from selling the Hilo...that's a win. congrats ... bet you sh*t yer pants when the image was off... 8).... really glad it worked out for you bud! Do they mod the AD as well? cheers Wiz

I had the original Simplicity stuff back when, and I have 7th heaven reverb as well as the bricasti M7M..... I have shot the 7th vs the hardware....and it was enough for me to keep the hardware....but, it really would heavily be person dependent....
Maybe someone doing acoustic guitar and vocals would fall head over heels for the M7M.... perhaps those with really big track counts or certain genres might not get the dollar value compared to the software imitations...
cheers

Sunday night about 930 pm, I was sitting watching TV, Jo had gone to visit the grandchild in Toowoomba about 5 hrs south of us....
My left arm started to lose sensation, then the fingers and thumb on my left hand went numb, then the left side of my mouth got numb (not unlike a dentists needle....)
I thought, holy shit I am having a stroke (vegetarian, don't drink, don't smoke... exercise most days) I immediately rang the 24hr nurses helpline... she immediately called an ambulance for me.....took a while to get to me... about 40 mins....they took me to hospital...turns out I had a TIA ( temporary ischemic attack) which is like a stroke but doesn't last long, the symptoms passed in 15 mins...
I spent the night in hospital, CT scan with contrast... etc etc ... going to the doctor later today to find out what's the plan going forward..
I am lucky here in Australia.. and where I live... that I got such good and free treatment....
I will update when I know more... but it was pretty fucking scary! and sort of focuses ones mind... LOL....
If you ever feel any symptoms of stroke...dont muck about...seek help immediately... it is super time critical...
cheers

Am I remembering correctly that Wiz has an m7, with his switch to UA, wonder how he views the m7 vs plug question. Still have it….on every mix. I have done extensive shoot outs with it against plug in versions of it. They aren’t as good imho….. if you can afford it …..demo it cheers Wiz

Its a great instrument there! Nice to see you keeping in your range.
I will say, the vocal sounds much better dry in this clip, at least on my system. I do realize that the EQ/DE-ESS/COMP it was meant to sit in the mix, but I instantly missed all the body and fullness.
Look forward to the tune,
FM
Thanks yeah even though chess didn't ask for the non effected vocal.. I thought it would be a good example of what it sounds like at recording stage vs what it might end up sounding like when in a mix.... for the lurkers out there... 8) cheers Wiz

I've always been curious what might happen after the mod if Universal Audio decides to update the firmware. Does it do a components check like some PCs do? Other than the clock, and that depends on how you view the clock as a component, all of the other mod components are analog components, so there wouldn't really be any parts that could be "checked" by the system. I'm curious about this mod. I've considered it before, but never pulled the trigger. It's not even because I necessarily had any complaints about the sound. It was mostly just FOMO, but that always got cured when I looked at the price and wondered if it actually made a difference. That said, I do own two x16s, so I would actually be able to mod just one and then do a true A/B comparison. That's always been part of my reason for not doing the mod. Before I got a second x16s, I was always put off by the ability to do a real comparison, and was otherwise left to reading opinions or listening to loopback files which were still passing thru my own Apollo. So I never could be convinced to pull the trigger. Maybe one of these days. I'll be curious to see what John thinks. Can you hear a difference between your x8 and x16 converters? cheers Wiz

Yeah, in the 90s I had a couple Adats and a Soundcraft board, a dbx comp, the lowest end one, ugh, an Ensoniq DP4, and a growing body of mics, including an SM7. What I didn’t have was a space. So did mostly demo level stuff, but a couple things were self released, and I was charging money for my services. So semi serious I suppose. Then came real employment, a dog, marriage, a kid etc. And recording went back to hobby status, where it has remained. Cheers, Geoff That was actually pretty serious money in that gear at the time here in Oz

I recorded a song on my iphone in a big room with lots of echo. I began to create a Logic project and used the little Tap Tempo app on my iPhone. I thought I had it right, but there's a slight difference between the iPhone track and the Logic project. How can I accurately find the tempo of the iPhone track? https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-john-butler/thank-you-for-everything-w-piano-iphoneIn logic you could use smart tempo

or anyone use a chandler RS124 for tracking? can it get transparent? I have an Audioscape Opto (LA2A) and a Retro STA LEVEL. If you want transparent compression with very few artifacts then the STA is great. It can knock off 20dB without even sounding like its doing 5dB GR! But like the RS124 it does have a characterful tone - that's the nature of tubes and transformers. I had two STA levels and 2 LA2A's when I had my hardware... the STA level is just fantastic to sing through.... cheers Wiz
