Yeah, in the 90s I had a couple Adats and a Soundcraft board, a dbx comp, the lowest end one, ugh, an Ensoniq DP4, and a growing body of mics, including an SM7. What I didn’t have was a space. So did mostly demo level stuff, but a couple things were self released, and I was charging money for my services. So semi serious I suppose. Then came real employment, a dog, marriage, a kid etc. And recording went back to hobby status, where it has remained.

There are times I'd prefer it to be a hobby, but I can't conceive of a world where I don't have my space and I go to a 'real job.'

I went from serious to hobby. Ran commercial studio for 5 years. 2300 sq feet. Control room, live room, lounge, 3 iso booths and a vocal booth. We put in the 5088 and 6 months later landlord booted us out.
Now I’ve got a great collection of gear in our living room and my girlfriend and I are writing and recording all the time, for ourselves. Not taking every project in the door just to make rent (and a few bucks).
My first legit studio experience was in 1999. Our band went into a local shop. ADAT machines, Mackie 24 channel, bunch of cool outboard DBX 2u silver preamps. $40/ hour. Today that equates for $75/ hour…for a Mackie console. When we put in the 5088, I was getting $450/ 10 hour day. What’s wrong with this picture?
The industry sucks and is unsustainable. I make WAY better money with my day job and now can just concentrate on making music on my own terms.
