I own 2 x Royer SF-12's stereo ribbons, and a Neumann SM69 tube.
The Royers are used ALL THE TIME, every damn session on something. I personally love them on Acoustic guitar, Overheads on drums, and of course Room mics.
The Nuemann is also wonderful, but not used here as much.

The original versions of Radar, starting with Radar II, then Radar V, and Radar 6, are all VERY STABLE, RELIABLE, simple to use, and sound FABULOUS, even with the standard Classic convertors. A no brainer really.

Don't get me wrong. I love Radar, and have been a owner since 1991. After tape the Radar was a life saver.
I spent 8k updating one of my Radar V's to Radar Studio (although now, not sure why?)
Anyhow, now I have ProTools, DP, and MixBuss all installed on my unit. I don't use PT, never did, but I had it installed to open other peoples projects if need be. (It's been over 2 years and I still haven't used it once on Radar!) On occasion I mix using DP, so I thought it would be wonderful to mix thru the Radars convertors. My version of DP 8, works perfectly on all my Mac's but just crashes on my Radar Studio. I also wanted to use, my UA Thunderbolt Satellite while mixing with the Radar, it was promised, but as of today still no solution unless you purchase a card and install it. But I already own the Octo Satellite. Harrison MixBus, works, but again, not my thing.
Now here's the funny part, everything I loved about the Radar, ease of use, reliability, is in question, because I still have many, many, quirks that happen daily with my machine in Radar mode. This is exactly opposite my experience over the last 20 years of using Radar in any version up to now. So all I loved about the Radar (other then the sound which is still beautiful) is in jeopardy.
Now the tech support guys, including Barry, have been great, as you know their customer support is fabulous, but still after many updates, software revisions, nothing has really changed. So I'm kinda bummed about this.
I get the feeling they have dropped the ball on what made Radar great, and have been spending all their time getting all this other shit to work. Just my take.

Could be wrong, but I believe it's basically the same unit, that runs via a touch screen system...
I've got three new units, used to own 5 of the Radar II's in my place, and loved every minute I didn't have to use a DAW. They were wonderful. Basically a tape recorder without tape!
But I gotta tell ya, as these new units they are building, get closer to being everything for everyman, I'm starting to worry.
I've already got three new Radars....and things just ain't what they used to be... (at least for me, in my everyday world)

I believe the Soundfield, and a Josephson mic, also allow for this same type of thing. And they have been out for quite a few years...

I dunno... Maybe it's just me, cause I'm a old bastard, a bit older then Chris...
But there was nothing in that video that I haven't been doing for 30 or more years. And I'm sure many other old bastards (like me!) have been doing the same, albeit in a different fashion.
It was quite normal in the 70's and 80's to print chorus' at slight higher levels then the preceding verse, changing guitar, and or drum levels, vocal blends, and of course, verbs, and echoes, for each part of the song. No new ground here Back then I would print all these separate pieces to tape, and then cut the sections together to make the final mix... If something didn't have enough or just needed a change, then a new piece was printed, and edited into the master. That was the way it was always done.

A great read, lots of INSANE stuff went on there, I know first hand, cause I did at least a few records for Victory. Probably about 5. And trying to get paid was another thing altogether.
From the top of my head... I did one album with Taking Back Sunday, and at least one or two with Ill Nino, and there was more, hard core stuff, but I don't remember at the moment.

I'm not sure about all the "DIY" kits out there, but this Serpent Compressor SB4001 is really GREAT~! The more I play with it, the more I'm "diggin" it.
Very, very, cool.

Gonna be mixing this week, so I figured I'd play around with a few comps on drum buss... Will be doing more comparisons as the week goes on... But for now, I posted a few MP-3's (I know!) a short clip of the drums for one tune I will be mixing sometime soon.

Will be putting them thru their paces starting tomorrow, and then after the holiday, Mike and I will be filming us using them in action on different instruments, in a mix. Once again it's a small world, as I was Cherry's Sound man, & recording guy back then Did sound for her with Frankie, Buzz & eventually Louie Lepore on Guitar... Members would come and go, but I hung on for a while, doing recordings, and Live sound for her at places likes Max's Kansas City, CBGB's, Great Gildersleeves, Tracks, Snafu, Hurrahs, Privates, The original Ritz, and many, many, more I can't even think about right now.
Worked a lot of gigs for Main Man Management, with Tony Zenetta and Maxx Macari... Usually small last minute city gigs for their artists, David Bowie, Mick Ronson, Ian Hunter, Iggy Pop, and the like. Was a great time to be involved in the music scene in Manhattan.
Good luck buddy, I think they'll do the right thing. (if not, I could always call Uncle Carmine) Just sayin....

I believe thatVideo is not a good representation for the Red Box. (H&K should do a new one showing what it is really capable of)
I bought 4 of these when they were first introduced. (still have them!)
Needed something for the "Mountain" tour I was mixing live at the time.
I must say, the original Red Box (although very limited) sounded pretty damn great in a live situation, with the sound from the live amp in the house blended with the Red Box, it was beautiful. Gave me all the control I ever needed at those ear splitting levels, was a blessing at the time.
After the tours, I used them successfully on many, many, recording dates at my place, usually mixed in with the real mic'ed signal. Added a certain thickness, & punch I couldn't get with mic's alone. I still have those boxes, and use them when I need just a little something different, or more...
I have used a newer version, a few years ago, and it did indeed soon better then my originals, but I have yet to hear this latest release. Might have to grab a few?
