Could be wrong, but I believe it's basically the same unit, that runs via a touch screen system...
I've got three new units, used to own 5 of the Radar II's in my place, and loved every minute I didn't have to use a DAW. They were wonderful. Basically a tape recorder without tape!
But I gotta tell ya, as these new units they are building, get closer to being everything for everyman, I'm starting to worry.
I've already got three new Radars....and things just ain't what they used to be... (at least for me, in my everyday world)

(at least for me, in my everyday world) So long as Barry and crew continue to by hyper-focused on quality, RADAR systems will continue to be the same great units they've always been. Obviously, you can still use RADAR in the same DAW-less manner that we're used to, if that's what you want to do. But I'm happy that the more recent developments have opened up more uses for those great converters. I'll be interested to see what they have new up their sleeves this NAMM. Not that I'll be making any purchases any time soon - still trucking along with my RADAR24 here.

(at least for me, in my everyday world) Paul I'm loving my Radar V/24 ver.3.3? with Classic Converters, but Being on BE and SCSI is a bit scary if something happens! At $1000 to upgrade to Windows and close to that to ad SATA, the latest studio looks like a smart upgrade. I have found it is very finicky about what RAM you use and Bought 2 NOS PSU's that they use ( not from IZ) . I might try one of the SCSI Converters others are using so that they can use SD or SSD but it's not really supported! So a 4K upgrade with support looks good, but if it loses something...🙁

Don't get me wrong. I love Radar, and have been a owner since 1991. After tape the Radar was a life saver.
I spent 8k updating one of my Radar V's to Radar Studio (although now, not sure why?)
Anyhow, now I have ProTools, DP, and MixBuss all installed on my unit. I don't use PT, never did, but I had it installed to open other peoples projects if need be. (It's been over 2 years and I still haven't used it once on Radar!) On occasion I mix using DP, so I thought it would be wonderful to mix thru the Radars convertors. My version of DP 8, works perfectly on all my Mac's but just crashes on my Radar Studio. I also wanted to use, my UA Thunderbolt Satellite while mixing with the Radar, it was promised, but as of today still no solution unless you purchase a card and install it. But I already own the Octo Satellite. Harrison MixBus, works, but again, not my thing.
Now here's the funny part, everything I loved about the Radar, ease of use, reliability, is in question, because I still have many, many, quirks that happen daily with my machine in Radar mode. This is exactly opposite my experience over the last 20 years of using Radar in any version up to now. So all I loved about the Radar (other then the sound which is still beautiful) is in jeopardy.
Now the tech support guys, including Barry, have been great, as you know their customer support is fabulous, but still after many updates, software revisions, nothing has really changed. So I'm kinda bummed about this.
I get the feeling they have dropped the ball on what made Radar great, and have been spending all their time getting all this other shit to work. Just my take.

First time you ever made a case for me not spending a large sum of money!😁 I get why they went the way they did, but I think the fact that it functions like people's DAW of choice in DAW mode not like a RADAR has confused many. The Controller , man PT needs a RADAR like controller!!!! It's sad that it isn't as Rock Solid as it has been in the past but that's one of the cool factors of the pre Windows Machines; An OS that For a company that isn't bloated so that it functions with your watch or refrigerator Still interested in what they have cooked up, maybe it's the 8-16 affordable interface that will take the cards everybody says they will buy but won't!

I know this is the wrong thread but school me guys...do I want to buy a $1500 24 track radar that's a few years old? Assuming it's fully functioning, is it spectacular?

I'm not saying that it replaces the sound of tape, but from the Original on damn if this isn't the closest thing to a Tape feel and sound! Even my classic Converters that only do 44.1/48 hang with the best of them. The big controller makes you feel like your back in the days of Auto locators. Try it!

The original versions of Radar, starting with Radar II, then Radar V, and Radar 6, are all VERY STABLE, RELIABLE, simple to use, and sound FABULOUS, even with the standard Classic convertors. A no brainer really.

Paul's experience has me scared. I hope my Radar 24 never dies Yes!! Considering these RADAR machines are rugged time proven, rock solid recorders. AND you could utilize the Core-Kit and Three Analog I/O Cards of the machine -- into a New Radar Studio Frame, running right along side a Pro Tools/DAW System, all in one dual-bootable machine, if you wanted to. Very slick computer.
