Didn't see anything about a "daddy"... Ok, maybe a bit snarky, but that's the situation. Seems like a great way to get your business started though. If you've got the money, set up a killer room, charge low rates, get the room booked up, build your reputation, then raise rates once you have a following.

The whole beginning of the article talks about their grandfather started the passion for music in the family. The grandfather gave his son ( which is the dad Tim ) a guitar when he was young... When Tims sons Preston began playing guitars, writing music, and recording the dad's ( Tim ) music passion was rekindled... Then they started acquired gear for a studio space... Then the son went to Belmont and starting gaining clients... Then they had this studio built and bought the modded bcm 10 and later in purchased the 8014 from VK once this trace horse space was in motion. Not to mention hiring professional designer/ acousticians and having it built!
Hey no hate here! It must be nice to have VK do a nice write up! I hope the dad has great music production and mixing experience because Belmont is probably amazing school however experience and application over time is what separates one AE from the next and someone who just graduated works will reflect that!
No doubt it's a Badass studio, bad ass gear, cheap prices, do they have examples of their mixes and master or samples of their tracking and productions?

Man I don't know how you guys in Nashville choose which studio to book! Do the folks on here without their own room choose based on owner operator, or based on console/room/outboard and bring in your own engineer, or just book the fanciest place available that fits your budget? I'm sure its a combination of all these, but the options would just have my head spinning.

Last I heard there were 36 or 37 studios in Berry Hill alone which is a 1 square mile "town" where Blackbird, VK, Sputnik, House Of Blues etc and Trace Horse are. The place looks cool. I should get over there and see them. They likely need some of my stuff to compliment that beautiful Neve!

Wow, that's a nice place, no doubt. It makes me suspicious, however, when the first dozen of pictures show interior design, basketball courts, paintings and cars before one gets to see the recording gear. Is this a place dedicated to creativity or Architectural Digest?? Very skilled photographer though...

The rooms, gear, and the duality are what I was hoping was in the gallery but I see it mostly "landscape and design" photos... Their instagram ( same name ) has a ton of gear pics... It's in DT Detroit so that may have to do with the size.. it's huge lol ... link below... place makes me drool www.instagram.com/royalhouserecording/ tasteliketape guitfiddler check the if link way more gear!

The article has no explanation of where. the money comes from could be independently wealthy, could be borrowed money, could be every penny they have is tied up in the studio. who cares? I have seen a fair number of studios from each camp fail and succeed! I have tried way to many times to talk somebody out or at least down the ladder, all along realizing somebody else is going to have no problem taking their money ! Part of me thinks these people are lucky to do what they dream of doing part of me knows they should be locked in a padded room ( funny how the state hospital for the insane was directly behind Full Compass when I started ) !

If he works 7 days (don't know what a day constitutes) a week for 52 weeks at those rates he'll only gross $127,400.00, which after taxes is ~$92K. He'll also look 10 years older. Call the hospital!!!! LOL.... With that kind of relatively meager income, there's no way he could survive without the studio owning most if not all of the equipment including the property. So, the kid got subsidized by no fault of his own due to the fact that being born in a wealthy family is not a crime. He better be good though, because if he can't parlay this into a lot more money he's gonna be one dog tired kid competing with people who are really good at what they do.

I could use a place like that here in NYC. It doesn't really matter much how it got there, what matters is if it's good, was it done with love and passion. These things can go either way. That room looks like one I wish I could own.

Add the cost of a Belmont music education to that. Even without that part, it doesn't add up to a business which stands much chance of truly operating in the black, all costs on the balance sheet. It may work long term if things really go well in continuous fashion, with the final profit making piece being the future sale of the property. Not a game many can play. Good luck to them. Loosely speaking, Tennessee is mostly property tax (including business assets) and no income tax if I recall? Anyone working freelance audio visual production gigs with little/no overhead can make that day rate in many states with low costs of living, at least within range if not vastly more.

As a parent, if I had the money to start a business for my daughter that she would spend her days doing what she loved, I would.
The lesson I tried to teach my daughter is one of balance....
You need money. Sad fact but true.
You need to put some away for the inevitable unseen circumstance.
Only borrow money to buy a house. Pay cash, or don't have it... renting something for a bit is a good idea.
The only thing you can't buy, is TIME. When you work for pay, you sell off a portion of your LIFE, depending on your particular viewpoint, you might only have one, you don't get that time back.
You might as well work hard, work towards the goal of spending time, making the money you need, doing something you love or at the very least don't hate.
I hope this kid succeeds, and I hope his parents if they did indeed float him, feel a great sense of achievement in giving their child the chance to chase his dream, with whatever time he has.
cheers

Many of the musical greats had rare opportunity's through their parents in one form or another. Mozart's father was the finest violinist in Austria. Picasso's father taught painting. There's a connection like that sometimes, so I wish this young man well.

Hey at least it looks like he's providing a good service at a good (probably introductory?) price.
A couple of my good friends from college started a music related business that many on here will know of, and financial support from their families definitely played a large part in their ability to do so. They have also worked their asses off for the past 10 years to grow into a great manufacturer and employer, and I'm incredibly proud of what they have accomplished. Plus, they make sweet gear.
