I'm looking at this as I have a small studio and when tracking bands I could use one or two of these to go direct with no bleed into the drum kit.
The old Palmer PDI-03 has been around a long time and they still sell it. This is the new version.
This guy is a bit geeky in the beginning, but he does a nice job of showing all the bells and whistles.

I recall dandeurloo saying Styx uses these on tour. Stage volume is basically drums.

any solid state amp can be run without a load into an RNDI, then you can use a cab simulator on it. I've done that for some stuff with my little orange amp. Plus, you can use it as a DI for anything. Sounds great!

I had one for half a year sold it and ended for silent recording in conjunction with a dummy load with the red box by HK. hughes-and-kettner.com/de/products/redbox-5/red-box-5/If you put some reverb on it you often will ask yourself if you need to re track it with a real microphone / cab. Redbox is to me the next best to a real speaker. I agree with this review never had a problem to use the simulated speaker signal in a mix. www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/hughes-kettner-red-box-5-581828

There was a big difference between the clean Vox amp/speaker tone and the Red Box 5. Of course, the person doing the tweaking of the Red Box-if indeed tweaking can be done- might have not known what they were doing.

I believe thatVideo is not a good representation for the Red Box. (H&K should do a new one showing what it is really capable of)
I bought 4 of these when they were first introduced. (still have them!)
Needed something for the "Mountain" tour I was mixing live at the time.
I must say, the original Red Box (although very limited) sounded pretty damn great in a live situation, with the sound from the live amp in the house blended with the Red Box, it was beautiful. Gave me all the control I ever needed at those ear splitting levels, was a blessing at the time.
After the tours, I used them successfully on many, many, recording dates at my place, usually mixed in with the real mic'ed signal. Added a certain thickness, & punch I couldn't get with mic's alone. I still have those boxes, and use them when I need just a little something different, or more...
I have used a newer version, a few years ago, and it did indeed soon better then my originals, but I have yet to hear this latest release. Might have to grab a few?

Of course, the person doing the tweaking of the Red Box-if indeed tweaking can be done- might have not known what they were doing. This video is a bad example IMHO. Buy one and track both red-box and speaker - that is what the thing is made for. I did it last year and very often the red box won the race - since then I use it nearly on everything. I also compared it to guitar tones by my favorite players. I always was able to match it - without hours of tweaking I think this speaks for itself? What I like about the red -box it feels like a speaker under my fingers. Cab-IRs does not simulate the compression and distortion part of the speaker, the red box does it. Feels like playing a real cab you just need some verb to taste because its totally dry. If you don't like the red-box send it back - 30 day money back guarantee. No risk no fun...
