jcoutu1 - I'm not sure how you got so bent by my comments. I don't recall directing anything at you personally.... Perhaps VCC v.2 is dear to you and you felt I was dissing it? If so, sorry, that's totally cool with me. Just cause it doesn't work for me doesn't mean it's not a viable tool for you or someone else. You say "give you some substance". I'm not sure what you actually MEAN by that, but aside from the time factors, there's a reason I don't post up clips. There are too many un-hinged people on GS and even here, and the abuse and stalking many of us who do this for a living have had to put up with in the past make it not worthwhile. I'll leave that to other brave souls. Also, clients are known to frequent as well, and it is not my intent to embarrass or single them out when the negativity starts to fly. I've given legit (at least legit for me, and since I would have to be the one doing the substantive clips, that's all that counts) many times. I'm sure you've read them. You're around these parts enough. You may disagree with my reasoning or think I'm "full of it" as you put it. That's AOK with me. If that is not legit enough for you, then feel free to discard my $.02 or block out my posts. My goal is not to convince you or anyone else of my opinion. I just enjoy throwing it out there like the rest of us. Inevitably, there are contrary opinions to mine - that's part and parcel with any creative endeavor. I try not to get all pissy about it. Hopefully you can do the same with me. re: v.2 - I got an answer for my question, and for those who didn't get all butt hurt, and gave me legit opinions, I'm grateful. It has led me to believe that even with my doubts, given opportunity, I should give v.2 a shot. re: Gefell - 692/xxx The clips are out there on one of the biggest, longest running threads on GS. Doesn't take much effort to find it. But....as wonderful and thankful for that shootout as so many people have been, I'll never do another because of the reasons stated above. Audio and music seems to galvanize people in strange ways..... Cheers, bp I can't take it anymore. I'm going to free Bill up so he won't be bothered by us mere mortals anymore. Godspeed, Bill. Are you kidding me? What's up with you banning people for having opinions? I don't understand why you guys are getting so bent up.

Hated VCC when I tried it a couple years ago. I would try the new one except I'm trying to move away from slate plugs.
Has anyone tried the Sonimus console emus? I have their stuff and use it all the time because it beat out VCC 1 to my ears. I would be curious if anyone could compare it to the new version.

Hi guys i worked hard to put this project alive. I would like to know if there is any interest for an LA2A pcb, with build manual, wiring diagrams, dc heater option for V1 as well as ac heater, etc. I can't acces my pictures right now, but you can see the feeler post on my facebook page and let me know on the post your interest. Www.facebook.com/elab.electronicregards I saw this on GDIY also, I'm way down. How much would you be selling pcbs for?

Isn't this a GSSL. It looks like one. I think it's unquestionably a GSSL, without the sidechain or turbo mod. Which you can build for around 350..

Let's get a list cooking of what guys are using for reference tracks these days. I'm mostly interested in quality tracks released within the past 10 years or so. What do you guys use? RnB and hiphop - Anderson Paak - "The season/carry me" *or* Chance the rapper - "Angels" Indie/lofi - Yellowbirds - "Stop Tonight" Singer songwriter - Tiny Ruins - "Reasonable Man"

The Stam has about half the components compared to the Serpent Audio SB-4000 compressor I've been struggling to build. The SB4000 is a BEAST. It really is a hot-rodded SSL with the extra features. For the money it is a no brainer if you DIY. The insides of the Stam looks like a GSSL...

I know I sound like a broken record - and I have no endorsement with CAPI (Jeff is a friend, though) - but man, his LC24/40s or BT50s are phenomenal and half the price of other products. Same with the FC526. Absolutely amazing compressor. Basically an 1176 with thickness and zero pinch. Ultimate tracking comp. When are those new EQs coming out? Reallllly want to get a pair of the BT50s

How about the Don Classics NV73? Anyone want to give those bad boys up? My favorite preamp I own. DIY cost of ~450 for the stand alone and ~700 with the EQ makes it probably the most affordable authentic 1073! Never giving it up. Have heard great stuff about the hairball pres as well.

Secondly, I still have issue with vids like this where the guy is like "oh I don't like to use much gear" and then proceeds to rattle off names of about 30 pieces of high end gear throughout the video that are in use across tons of tracks, either during tracking, during mixdown or printed to separate tracks.. Third.. That snare.. There is NO way there isn't compression on that snare. It's 100% dynamically flat, with no rattles at all. Nothing but wet smack and perfect snare strainers.. There has to be compression on it, since even when he solo'd the drums and turned off the parallels, it barely changed at all. Methinks there is still things done to the mix that At about 33:30 you can see that the kick and snare are being slammed by the distressors right behind him.

IMO it is one of the closest plugins out there to the real thing. I've tried all the UAD stuff, Waves (although haven't tried the j37 yet..), Massey tapehead etc. and I keep coming back to slate. Pretty much always use it with 456 15ips and -1.5db on the bass response.
Still, I won't be getting rid of my tape machine anytime soon.

Can we get a reveal? I would be shocked/stoked if B was the 3U. Sure, I didn't plan on making a big thing about it. Just curious what people thought. Thanks all for the input. A is the TLM67, B is the GZ67Fet Wow cool! Have never tried the tlm67, although have tried the tlm102 and imo it also lacked body but was also much more harsh in the 3-5k range. However, my warbler MKIV holds its own against my peluso p12 so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised , but damn. What a value.

Agreed, B is sounding much fuller to my ears. Also maybe a tad louder than A?

Thanks Don, this is a fantastically done comparison. One of the few shootouts I've listened to where I didn't feel the need to level-match. U87 wins all for me, with more detail (a little bump in the mids and upper-mids?), but I'm feeling pretty good about my MKID - at 1/6 of the price. It's got the vibe. I'm surprised you didn't try the V2 or even V1 setting on the OH recording. That may have come even closer. ..or perhaps you think those settings might have been too thin? Compared to a vintage u87 I'd say its closer to 1/10th the price! Great shoot out ragan, the 3u mics really hold up. I definitely preferred the U87 as well, but I think that it's important to realize that we are comparing fet mics to a tube mic. I would be interested in hearing 3u's tube offering compared to the U87. I love my MKIV, but it does lack the air and definition that my CM6 has. Not a bad thing, just 2 different flavors.

With the risk of making you tired of my bragging I just have to post a pic of my bench right now. If you're not a professional builder or work at BAE or Heritage this is not the everyday sight. This is 24 kits - twenty newly built and four NV73EQ built a month ago - all waiting for a relay and a cap scheduled to ship Monday. Past midnight here and quite content and a bit proud, celebrating with my fav beer! My jaw is on the floor. Nice work man! Really interested in how the EQ additions sound. Was thinking about grabbing them for my pair but can't seem to part with the custom faceplates on mine
