It's very hard to limit it to three. The first one is easy, The Beatles. The second two could be any combination of Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Deep Purple.

If you're not recording drums and you're mixing in the box, you can keep it simple. You could get away with a 2 channel unit for that. Things get more complicated, and arguably more fun when you start recording drums, incorporating outboard and mixing outside of the box. If and when you decide to do that, you'll know you need more channels. Until then, don't sweat it.

Beyerdynamic MC930. I upgraded to these after having KM184s and was very happy. I also kept them after getting a pair of KM84s. They are excellent mics.

There are usually some studio open houses or product demos at them…Addiction usually has one. Carter, Gruhn, and Rumbleseat are the vintage guitar shops to check out, Nelson’s Drum Shop for vintage drums, Forks for new (and occasional used) drums, Nashville Used Music will sometimes have a good, unexpected find. Eastside Music Supply is guitar pedal central. If you like acoustic/bluegrass music The Station Inn is worth a visit. Vickie Vaughn on the 16th is a good one. On the 20th Anthony Da Costa & Maya De Vitry are at Dee’s and that’s the best music for $5 you might ever hear. Food recommendations would depend on where you are staying and how you feel about waiting in line. Try to go to Arnold’s if you can. Even if there’s a line it moves pretty quick. I think living here for so long my recommendations are based off not having to wait and good service. Margot is my favorite breakfast and honestly place in Nashville. Just a great spot to have a meal. If Big Al’s is open, his breakfast and lunch are amazing but it’s a big meal and you’ll be moving slow the rest of the day. Monells in Germantown is also a fun experience especially if you are coming with friends/family. A quick cheap eat is Cheap Charlie’s Taco Truck in East Nashville. His family also owns Taqueria Andrea which is amazing. My two favorite breweries to sit outside and have a beer are Smith & Lentz and East Nashville Beer Works. Usually not too crowded great selection and good food. I’m not your guy for hot chicken recommendations. Great recommendation on Anthony Da Costa and Maya De Vitry at Dee's. I checked out their show last night. He is an amazing guitar player. Highly recommended. They are playing again next Tuesday night at Dee's.

Campbell's voice sounds a lot like Petty in that clip. It's like he heard him so long he started to sound like him.

Nice! That's more anesthesiologist territory though.

I've always wondered how the nickel capsule Gefells (M295?) compare.

It would seem like this would be bad news for the folks who make the Rock Solid Audio controller, although I believe it is considerably cheaper.

I use FabFilter ProG regularly on snares to keep out the hihat bleed. I wonder how this compares.

Agreed. They all sound great, but that 414/BAE combo sounds amazing.

I just think your drums sound amazing regardless of the combinations. I’d love to know more about this kit and the heads. Any muffling on the snare? Love that snare. Thanks so much bradd . What you're hearing on this is an early 80's Gretsch kick with no front head and with a packing blanket inside. It took me a long time to come around to doing this because I love tone on a bass drum. However since my room is not that big and I often have a pretty good amount of mics set up I found that low end build up in my mics was a problem. It actually balances better for me and still has a lot of life with no front head. The toms are Ludwig Standard with coated emperors on tops (the kit on this picture from instagram). Snare is a very old Craviotto deep solid maple from when they were called Solid Drum Co. I think I have some muffling on that but not overkill. I have a lot of drums and snares so I change it up a lot to suit the music I'm doing/ when I get bored. Thanks for checking it out!

Thanks, Monkey. I listened in the car this morning again and realized it's not done. I think the vocal has a little too much verb and needs to be slightly more up front. I also think there is a little too much low end in the room mic that's making the toms too boomy. In terms of the telephone effect, do you hear that on everything or just certain instruments?

bradd - please do NOT auto tune that vocal! Thanks. I’m torn on tuning. I’ve never been big on it. I feel like if it needs to be tuned, I should retrack the vocal. I tried it with tuning this weekend and really didn’t notice a big difference.

I typically do that as well, but didn’t on this one. I’m going to do another mix with HPF on kick and bass.

Thanks folks. I agree that the bass needs to come down. Listened to the vocals again and don’t really hear anything flat, but I’ll tune it and see if it’s better.
