Interesting. Maybe I'll be able to save some money after all.

You'll want to check to see if a Mark I will work with your Mac. I'm due for a new computer and it is my understanding that my MKI won't work with the current Macs.

I'm a lawyer, and I'd probably agree with that statement.

D6 is a great all-arounder. Just inside the front hole, angled slightly so it doesn't get too much attack. I suspect that pointing it directly at the beater was my mistake. Operator error, per usual.

I personally dislike the Audix D6. It sounds like it is EQ'd for a metal mix. I typically use an RE20 in the studio and find it be a good all around choice. I would imagine that the RE320 would be similar, but I have not used one. For live use though, I think the RE20 style mics would be a little heavy and difficult to deal with. I would research the Sennheiser offerings that can be clipped.

That sounds amazing, John. I did that with Take it to the Limit a couple of years ago. I'll see if I can figure out how to post it.

I'll offer a different perspective. I'm a Mac user on Logic, but if I was using Cubase, I'd stick to PC. It has always been a PC first, Mac second platform.

I've heard 47 style clones that sound muffled, but my Flea 47 with the F7 capsule isn't one of them.

I certainly haven't tried everything, but I love the CAPI VP28s. They sound great on everything and I think having a console full of them would be awesome.

I'm going to step out on a limb just a bit and say that during the sessions, and immediately after the take, the H251 sounded less like a microphone to me. Interpret that as you will, but it felt more like a record, more like being in the room, more transparency, less EQ'd or capsule affected, etc.. I'm starting to get the feel that some people are going to be very surprised at which is which. Glad I held back for awhile. I will reveal when it seems everyone has been able to listen without prejudice. I know I was a little taken upon putting both mics up together for the first time. Bill I had exactly this reaction when I sang into that other brand's 251. It was the first time that I ever sang into a microphone and just heard myself the way I wanted to sound. I was never concious of any artifacts that reminded me that I was singing into a microphone. I can't wait to get both of these mics in the same room one of these days.

drbill Congrats on the mic! Your experience is similar to my own. I also used to think my voice was more suited to 47/49 style mics, but getting my Upton completely changed that. I've said it a million times, but it's easily my favorite mic I've ever owned. Listening to the clips, my guess is A = 251 and B = 47. I'll be pretty surprised if it's the other way around. Mic B has that characteristic midrange thing I always associate with 47s, whereas A sounds clearer and more polished. I feel like this is especially pronounced on the acoustic guitar. I've never been the biggest fan of a 47 on acoustic, whereas I can get along with a 251 there. Happy to be wrong, though. Another thing these clips highlight is just how similar 47s and 251s can be! One of the first things that shocked me when I got my Upton was that it wasn't radically different from my old M149 or the UT FET47 I had for a while. It's still a different beast, for sure, but not as drastic as something like, say, a TLM102 compared to a U87. This was actually a pleasant surprise, because it basically has all of the qualities I like about 47ish mics with none of the drawbacks. I had a similar experience several years ago. I rented a couple of hours at Blackbird and sang through a vintage 47, 67, 251 and C12 (unfortunately they did not have an M49 available that day). They all exhibited slightly different characteristics, but were not as different from each other as I had been led to believe. The difference between a C12 and U47 on my voice was not night and day.

They are excellent boutique amps made here in Nashville. I have the model called the Dirty Sink, which is a Marshall style with 65 JTM and 68 JMP circuits. They also made a Clean Sink which was a Fender/Vox style. The Kitchen sink is both amps in one.

Stratboy just got a 3rd Power Kitchen Sink. That amp can do it all.

I know from personal experience that on my first two albums, I had no understanding of phase on drums. Understanding how to ensure that drum mics were in phase took things to a better level.

The video is for the original version. As I understand the new version, the process is much simpler.

How are you guys using it on drums? You wouldn’t want to time align OH or Room. I have the first version and the online instruction videos say you shouldn't align the room mics since that defeats the purpose of having room mics. I've found it incredibly useful for tightening up the rest of the kit. There is a good YouTube video on how to use it. The new version looks like it will be faster to implement, but I think the original is one of the most useful plugins I've used.

I've never quite been able to wrap my head around these systems. Where do they go in the chain if I'm mixing on a console? Between the monitor outs and speakers? What if I am using subs?

I think the PC vs. Mac decision at this point boils down to which DAW you are using. With Cubase, I would definitely go PC.

Yes, Pianoteq has a "condition" slider that goes from mint to hasn't been tuned since 1805. Moving it about 20% away from the mint end gives the piano the perfect character in my opinion. Would you think the most simple version is all I would need? I'd have to study the differences between the versions, but I know that Pro is completely overkill. I have it and use about 1% of its features. Check out the differences between Stage and Standard and pick which one looks best. You probably can't go wrong either way.
