Is this for tracking, mixing, or both? The Chandler RS124 is really special on a vocal when it works, but I don't personally find it to be something you can use on everything, unless maybe in parallel during mixing. It likes to be hit hard, but because of the slow attack, the fronts of phrases can sometimes be a bit interesting to deal with. When it works though, it's pure class and the super fuse mode is amazing. Someone else mentioned the Retro 176.... great box and much more practical/useful that an RS124, LA-2A, or Sta-Level IMO with fantastic tone. FWIW, an 1176/LA-3A combo seems to always work for me on almost any vocal, tracking or mixing. I highly recommend the Serpent Splice for the 1176 route, as you get both a Rev A and Rev D in one box, plus the ability to mix there I/O sections to make two other "revisions". With all the tonal options, I've yet to find a situation where I couldn't get something great happening. is that the original la3a ?
or audioscape ?

my question is who is making a capsule on par with neumann ? I have tried a bunch of k47 style capsules from different manufactures and they just dont sound the same . A few are decent but not quite cutting it for me

Next time I’m around a D12 I’ll try to put a 666 beside it for comparison. The description is so similar, yet I know they are different. My ev666 does not have the same kind of low end. Wonder if it is not healthy? How similar is the low end of the 666 to a re20?
Both my re20 & pl20 have a lot more low end than my 666. I think the 666 freq chart shows a few dB lower than the re20 at ~80Hz (maybe 6dB?)
I have a D25 that is my favorite bass mic (mostly used on kick drum though). I used to have a D12e that I would use on bass guitar which also sounded good but that whole AKG line varies mic to mic I think. And some lose the low end regularly and you have to realign the diaphragm, which happened a couple times with the D12e. Frankly they are a pain and if the D25 didn't sound so amazing I wouldn't keep it because I dread the day when the low end won't come back. I had a D20 that I could not get re-aligned to bring back the bass (gap / coil fouled or otherwise messed up)
Are you doing that alignment your self ? Do tell

I know max's transformer gets slammed a lot but , Its the best guitar amp mic Ive ever used , almost like a ribbon . I have a DU67 with his transformer and one with a Moby. The Tab BV12 was very bright and the moby is less so but still bright . Ive also experimented with a lot of tube types and find quiet NOS varieties dont vary too much in sound to me - TF silver/mullard/valvo . Both mics have neumann k67 caps . Strangely transformer swaps have made the biggest difference .

I went to the doctor for this as a youth , Blasted my ear , hurt . been using these cvs kits ever since . they work fine , if you have a full block , you just need to take your time and let the solution work .

Drummer here- (and a disclaimer for being an Istanbul Agop artist) I am surprised no one has mentioned Agop cymbals. They are very warm and well suited to recording. I love the traditional series, and the dark/thin crashes (18" are incredible), 14" medium hats and 22" medium ride. These are cymbals that rival the best of the 1960's Zildjian A sound that we love on so many classic recordings. They're hand hammered and made in Turkey using old world techniques. I am sure I have some recordings I could share if you wanted to hear some examples. Hey there , A - does the character of the agop line differ dramatically from cymbal to cymbal ? From experience the new zildjians and pastie are all pretty consistent . The drum exchange in Chicago has a few Agops but not the full line .

I agree with vintagetubelug , the Istanbul Agop cymbals were eye opening to me . They have a magic I hear in some of the early zildjians . A friend has a Mel lewis 20" that he no longer lets me borrow .

I have a 81' u87 and a pair of km84s and they work well on almost everything . Im still searching for the wow moment on my voice though . trying to get a u67 in my hands , maybe a straight trade for the others . What are some of the 'wow factor' things you're heard? For instance, mine is Sting's vocal on 10 Sumner's Tales. Every vocal is amazing. for my voice . not sure what you are talking about
