What other mics do you have? And what are you recording?

what do people think of the neumann U87? still a good mic? or there are better options for workhorse mic? There are two microphones that work on absolutely everything. 1. A pre 1987 Neumann U87i and 2. a brass capsule AKG C414. Defacto industry standards to this day. The U87 is the top choice for value, utility and application.

Yes. Now the u87ai has some issues but the U87 is a classic workhorse ldc

not really worth it? wanted something for female vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, was looking at the U47 fet also.

U87, even and u87ai, will be more more versatile than a u47FET.

I have a U87ai Rhodium and U67 reissue and they can handle most anything I want to track. Of course we have other dynamics, ribbons and small diaphragm condensers to play with but you can’t go wrong with a u87.

The U87 even in modern AI trim is pretty much the de facto industry standard vocal mic, but is it the right mic? That is a question you are the only one who answer and only by trying a bunch of mics.

You didn't say what other mics you have. If you've got others, what's wrong with them? A U87 is a great mic, but we're pretty good at spending your money for you. There are excellent mics for less money (and some will be better for your application than a U87) and you might find your needs better served by a small selection rather than a single one.

A Neumann U77 is even better if you can find one.

Having a good relationship with a local studio, that has a U87... Is one way to save some $$.
I'm fortunate that one of my best friends, has one, as a backup. (He also has a very nice Project Studio)
So either of these situations, can free up $$, to get/experiment with other vocal microphones.
I discovered other "winners" on my voice that way. From under $100, topping out at $1250. BTW if the OP is pursuing outside business IMHO, and wants to do their own vocal tracking... Start witha nice/used U87ai. I just read someone getting a new one from an European dealer for around $2200 US. Not sure how that works.

The U87 is a desert island mic. As long as you've got P48 you can record anything with it and it will sound good to great. Much more useful than a FET47 IMO.

A Neumann U77 is even better if you can find one. Stop teasing. No kidding. After decades in the LA studios, I've never even seen or heard of one being mentioned until rowmat here mentioned his. I think you can scratch that off the list unless you happen to accidentally stumble across one - in which case you should probably immediately buy it.

I think a U87 would be good in a minimalist microphone collection, as the "good mic." Or a U67.
I can think of two bands, one with each type of microphone, that used them on "everything" on their records, rather than a large variety.
Personally, I find the K67 / K87 capsule to be one of the most versatile sounds I have heard, working on many sources.
But no, I've never owned one due to the price. To me, that's the main knock against them. Maybe find a used one.
Have a look at the Serrano 87, on the RGO threads archive, it might suit your needs for a bit less cash, get to a similar place.

I have a 81' u87 and a pair of km84s and they work well on almost everything . Im still searching for the wow moment on my voice though . trying to get a u67 in my hands , maybe a straight trade for the others .

FWIW the Bock Soundelux U99, is comparable to the mighty U67 (on me). Streets around $2600.
What's interesting is that although I have the same capsule in my FET U195, the two models sound "different enough" to be complementary. Chris

For instance, mine is Sting's vocal on 10 Sumner's Tales. Every vocal is amazing.
