Funny enough, I kind of like Emily on the V Comp with me on the Opto in the crooning styled duets. The V gives Em’s voice a little weight, the Opto gives mine a little clarity. http://instagram.com/p/CLMs0TzhWQU

I think we just grow. I loved tube preamps till I got some great Neve preamps. I also made some really nice recordings on SSL preamps over the years at my studio and other studios. They are cleanish and punchy, but I always thought they were nice. Use what works.

So, I got the Opto racked last night and started playing around with some samples of Emily and I this morning through both the Opto and the V Comp. They are definitely different sounding. The Opto is smoother and a little sweeter sounding. The V Comp is rich with character and added presence. You really can't go wrong with either, but they do offer something a little different. More to come.

Got my Opto yesterday. Hoping to rack it up later tonight. It's a crazy week for me though. I may not be able to really dive in until this weekend. We'll see.

In that case, you're right. Might as well buy a new one, they go for around 3k. The reason they're selling so high is because of long wait times on new ones. So people are trying to cash in on the people who need it NOW. This has been the main reason a lot of used gear has gone up in price if you ask me. I've seen prices for pieces I want listed at the same cost as new, but they are available now and apparently "like new."

I like the mics a little above the mouth and angled down. U67 for me can be almost right in front of the mouth. FleA 49 slightly above. Both aimed down toward the mouth, but not directly in front of the mouth. Emme and I have big voices and mics sometimes don’t like the volume if we sing directly into it. http://instagram.com/p/CIMhKMDhZrS

What amazes me, and I noticed it immediately when I tried the V Comp and Opto at jtc111 ’s place, is that you can really push a real compressor without it sounding clamped down like the emulations all do. So you can hit the real compressor harder and get a smoother sound. This unit sounds so old school and is even working on Emily’s voice. Having some real fun with this baby and I’m just goofing around. Man, I can't wait to hear this on both your voice and Emily's voice. Going to be killer. I’ll post some stuff next week after I have the opto in here too. I can show how each handles the same vocal.

Having some real fun with this baby and I’m just goofing around. http://instagr.am/p/CK-IxOIhxFS I've been really pleasantly surprised with some of the Apollo comps on the way in. To the point I was wondering whether I should bail the HW and just go ITB for comps. But ultimately, there's a weight and command of the attack with the HW that you just don't get with SW. The 176 is really great on vocals. I really think you should consider the Apollo X...it's a really big improvement. Hoping to switch to a 16X when I can put the funds together. I can’t really use the software UAD plugins going in. For some reason, maybe cause I’m recording a little further back, or maybe it’s just the style I’m singing in, but the little latency there is shows up in my ears as being out of phase and I cannot hear myself. It basically makes the whole concept of how the Apollo works when tracking useless to me. It’s not just me either. This happens when tracking my wife and other bigger voices. People start having issues hearing themselves. For that matter I can’t really use the built in preamps either without clipping them. Not the converter, cause the levels going in are fine, but the digital preamps themselves. Smh. Not designed for opera singers. Lol. I had to completely re-record the “La Donna e Mobile” section of my FleA vs FleA video because they were completely distorted.

Ok. I lied. I’m sorry, but compressor plugins just don’t act the same as real compressors. This is sweet. More to come.

Dear UA, Pleeeeeeease do something like this. I'm begging you. Even just a mobile app like PT Control. Actually, that would be better than a control surface. Agreed.

He he. I’ve had my FleA 49 and Neumann modded MK67 for a while now and my whole BLUE System just sat there. I had always kind of wanted to upgrade to the Bottle from the Bottle Rocket Stage II I had, but I never felt it would beat out the 49 or 67 for what I like doing. So I sold it. Honestly, I was going to grab another mic and I decided that while I am at the beginning of recording vocals for the Christmas album I would be better off with a pair of compressors. jtc111 was nice enough to let me run some scratch vocals of Emily and I from the album through his gear back right before the pandemic. The opto sounded great on Emily and the V Comp on me... so despite being a mic nut I will be better served with the compressors... for now. I meant how are you buying these Audioscape units outside of the usual twice a week posting? It seemed like you bought the V-comp and Opto Comp, NOT right at the day/time that they post for sale. Hence my question about if you got them on Reverb or something. I watched the sales over the weekend and while sitting home enjoying a snow day on Monday I saw they had a V Comp still available that had not been purchased during Saturday’s release. I had a convo with jtc111 and humblecomposer about how purchasing a V Comp and Opto might enhance the quality of the album so I caved and bought the V Comp. So, I didn’t pick up the V Comp till Monday. Then, as audioscape mentioned, I shot them an email to ask if an opto would be available on this Wednesday or Saturday. I told them the situation about actively recording and mixing our Christmas Album. They allowed me to purchase an opto a couple of hours before releasing them into the wild since I was now part of the family and they had a few ready to go for last night’s release.

Is there a picture of the back of the unit anywhere? I want to check that I have the right cables, or place an order as needed. Its just Line in/out via XLR's That’s what I needed to know. Thanks.

Just placed the order. I'll let everyone know when it's fired up. YESSS!! Thank you man!! ;-) We spent a long time tweaking the input / output resistor pad networks on the V-COMP circuit - compared to the original which has an INSANELY high output and same with input; barely turn the thing up and it's BLASTING. In my usage, the way we've tweaked the input/output is perfect, allowing you to crank the input and come down on the output to get some cool saturation happening. Only reason I could imagine using a line attenuator on the output is to PUSH the output to get more JUJU out of it - which is actually a really cool idea ;-) ❤❤😍🙌 Is there a picture of the back of the unit anywhere? I want to check that I have the right cables, or place an order as needed.
