So, now there are a couple of tube tech cl1b compressors for over $6000 on the reverb website. I understand that there may be a lack of units out there, but how can anyone justify this price? As a former owner of tube tech cl1bs, I don't get it. They are great. But not that great!
I am curious if there are people here who think the cl1b is just irreplaceable for some reason, or deserves any purchase price anywhere near $6000!

CL1B is a very nice compressor, especially if you put NOS tubes in it.
$6k?
A person can ask whatever they want. Doesn't mean they'll get it.

Agreed. It will be interesting to see what the two particular units do sell for.

I saw one going on craigslist for 3k a week ago. Tell that guy he should revise his meds.

I don't think 3k is overpriced for a high-class, Made in Europe compressor. Have you looked at the price on an LA-2A recently?

No he meant for one mono unit. It’s listed on reverb for 6500. Guy is dreaming

There was a CL1a listed for $7995 recently. I don't recall the exact selling price but it wasn't too far below that.

When there was supply pre-pandemic, used prices ranged around $2,500-2,700 a year ago for a CL1B,......it will be interesting to see what the average used price returns to after the pandemic and its effect is over and supply chains are restored again. I was looking to pick a used one up a few months too late last year as prices kept rising and priced me out of the market since there are too many other good compressors for the money.
Not the same thing in regards to supply chain, but a similar thing seems to have happened to prices on KM84's this past year as people are asking for more than double than a year ago.

They cost the same here in the UK that they did the last few years.

Probably the same folks speculating on Game stop stock. Markets crash.

I couldn't jive with that comp. Not for me. Cl1b though, ::swoon::.

I couldn't jive with that comp. Not for me. Cl1b though, ::swoon::. I feel ya. The temptation of getting $6500-7000 selling mine is pretty strong! And then just replace it with an audioscape Opto for the time being, and when the market crashes, just get another CL1b. Oh . . . the . . . temptation. But I also use the CL1b nearly every day.

Well I know John. He is a very sweet guy. Their units are extremely high quality builds but there is nothing unique about their circuitry so you can easily find similar at much better prices especially when you are talking inflated prices. Reverb and Vintage King are exactly why used gear is drying up. No one is paying these prices but they are what people see and so everyone holds onto stuff or asks prices that no one will pay.

No compressor is worth that much. Not a single one.

No compressor is worth that much. Not a single one. Especially with the BS pots they put on their gear. I’ll never understand that. That comp sounds fantastic, but if you look at it wrong the knobs will jump around. Trying to do a recall on a piece of tube tech gear used to drive me absolutely nuts. Also - turning those knobs makes the piece feel absolutely cheap IMO.

No compressor is worth that much. Not a single one. My original Teletronix LA2A from the old Le Studio in Montreal is. I never regret a day that I dropped $6500 on it.

There’s an ebay seller listing things like Gates SA-39’s and 28-CO’s for $10K+ too, guaranteed no one has ever paid half that, market survey confirms 1/4 more average, sometimes less.

What I have found is that Geddy could use a plugin LA2A and he'd sound the same.

There was a pawn shop auction a while back, where the owner has until 6PM to come and pay their stuff out, otherwise the highest bidderr takes it. I was the high bidder at 1200eur for TubeTech SMC2BM and something else. Needless to say, at 5:55 the owner rushed in and paid his pawn amount... Damn, that was fun. Same guy later pawned some Amphions and whatnot, with same results. Living on the edge... Damn, maybe I should keep closer watch on the pawn shop online auctions again.
