The biggest difference is the off axis performance I know broadcast guys who love the 84 and hate the 184 for that alone. One guy who does orchestral one offs said the thing with the 84 is you put it up on a stand and never worry about where it’s pointed it’s just going to sound good. That is absolutely true! Before I got KM84s I was using Joly-modded Oktavas. They were fine, but only because I spent ages fine-tuning the distance and position to record acoustic guitars with them. And I didn't like them for overheads at all, even a X/Y pair sounded phasey. With the KM84 I just eyeball a position and record away. Instant "sounds like the records you own" acoustic guitar sound. Also I know it's going to work 99% of the time on any given instrument. Sure, I can try to fine tune the mic position, and I do sometimes, but it's a whole different game.

If you have a good Tweed Deluxe, a Champ is going to be a disappointment. Nothing can touch the Deluxe!!! Also every time I've tried a tweed Champ it just seemed like a boxy, farty, underpowered amp. It might just be me though...

It is not my first choice for an accordion, banjo and cowbell trio. I’ve used it on two out of those three with great results

45. But I still look like 25... maybe!!! (I’m sure there’s 20-somethings with graying hair out there, right?)

I’m out of rack space and out of I/O. Something’s gotta go. I suppose this is a few months away? I’m out of money Oh, yes, there's that small matter too!!!

IMO The Beatles are still underrated.

It’s a great plugin, no idea about the old vs new, and I’ve had it for many years so I’ve definitely used the old one.

It seems that you have a MASTER plan for this product... Gotta sell a 2U hardware unit to make room... Edit: uh oh I think I might actually need a A LOT more rack space...

Long time ago, yakking with a friend he had a brilliant observation. Said that when he's working in a great room like Electric Ladyland the only EQ he has is the one on the desk. Sure, there's a few other things... pair of EQP, handful of Neve 10xx... but basically, if he needs to EQ something he's got the console. But back at home, mixing ITB he could pick from 50 different equalizers. Is that really better? Maybe I should just pick one and use it on everything. YES!!! EXACTLY!!! That's why I "pick a console" with Console 1 and do the whole mix with it. It's on every channel. I don't mix and match consoles unless there's a very good and specific reason for it. I've gotten to know the default SSL 4000 better than the others, so that's what I use the most. So, in a way, it's like my studio has a SSL board and everything runs through it. And then there's outboard. I also run everything through Slate VTM, because my studio tracks "to tape", even if it's virtual. Works for me! I do eq the master buss, but only towards the very end of the mix - or the very start, if there's a good reason for it. Sometimes a song mixes itself with just some Pultec boosts!

Using Console 1 is great for this. Also, just because you CAN do something, it doesn’t mean you NEED to do it Also, when something just sounds right, I don’t go hunting for frequencies. I let it be or just do some big stroke moves.

I feed my VU meters off one of the headphone outs of my Drawmer monitor controller. It’s a bit unorthodox but it works!

Monitoring. However, I think that is just as understood as room treatment

Get the C4 plug-in and compress the high frequencies more and boost them. There's a vocal presets that does this in there. The A-Type plugin is really good. But I want the pretty colored lights in my rack! 😍

I don't have either, but for a modern hardware implementation there's also the Standard Audio Stretch. I'm out of space in my lunchbox, but I'm seriously considering it anyway!

Ever since I got the Audio Thing Type A I’ve been thinking of getting a real Dolby rack unit for that. Does anybody have one? I can get a 364 (cinema version) that seems similar to the 361. The CAT 22 card modification for the Dolby trick is explained here: www.audiothing.net/blog/the-dolby-a-trick/Before I jump in, I’d rather poll the collective RGO think tank... Edit: it looks like the 364 only decodes Dolby, so I’m not sure how it can be used or modified to encode.

Which Rogues? 5 or 6? Just out of curiosity - I've only heard the 5s. I got the Rogue 5 and it fixed the specific problem I was having: on very hot kick drum hits, the original opamp would kind of collapse and give me an ugly sound. Although I still think the original opamps were pretty good.

I put Louder Than Liftoff Rogue opamps on my Tone Beast and transients were noticeably improved.

Hard to go wrong with a KM84. On my last album I used a Royer R-101 for the same case use and it was a great choice. It just happened to be handy and I ended up using it a lot.

That’s some kind of ground problem. When you connect more pedals together they share the audio ground. Maybe the input cables are reversed?

Well, I can only compare the Hammer EQ plugin with the Hammer 2 EQ hardware unit. They are not exactly the same unit, Kush modeled the older one. I really liked the plugin and I love the hardware.
