Why not call gene Paul and ask him if he knows anything? He runs a mastering business from his analog home studio.

I did a record with a jazz group last month in a room with all JCF converters. Mastering labs preamps too! I just started mixing it today, the sound is amazing. We have prism in our studio here and are very happy too.

Pearlman’s “Church Mic” is cool and useful. Not perfect for every voice, but works on many. Heck of a room mic too. Awe man the Church mic, the real ones fall into that mythical unicorn class with the Decca modded M49’s and Doug Sax’s custom C12 based Sheffield labs mics. I have only used a real Church mic once and have always been interested in Pearlmans version. We didn’t use them (we used a pair of c12a’s that the studio had just gotten and cleaned up) but I had a pair of Sheffield mics in my hand last month. I wish I had plugged one in and listened to it….

Tlm170, U89 or U87 is unless you can do a pair of reissue 67s or 49s.
89 is my pick but many people prefer the 170. I’m also really happy with an 87 but I’m likely to reach for the others first.

I’m going to recommend something that hasn’t been mentioned yet. But when I read the OP my first thought was an API 525

Michael, You should look at the fire eye red eye preamp/di. I use it with the buscarino arch tops, passive piezos, bass, Rhodes, etc…. For exactly the sounds you like it’s the right box. The passive instrument sees an input it prefers so it passes on the right sound. Really excellent box. www.fire-eye.com/red-eye-1

millennia tcl2 lives on guitar over here. If I want a different flavor I go ITB. but for hardware, depending on the flavor I also really like distressor, 33609, 1176, Amek9098 (i really like this one). The millennia gives me a "it isn't compressed but it feels how I like it" sort of sound and that's timing related.

this is hard to discuss because the frequency content of the vocal has a lot to do with how you hear the balance ex cathedra of what the actual level measurement is....

the oxford dynamics does a lot of what we like in a 160. You can get the compression action to do basically exactly what a 160 does. and thankfully there's no box tone. And the limiter section follows and does the 1176 overshoot thing. It's amazing how versatile and useful the oxford is.

I bought the neumanns last year without intention of doing real work on them but just for monitoring and emergencies, but I've made some good mixes on them! you just have to learn how they sound but I was surprised how easy it is to do real work with them.

it's the best reverb plugin ever. It works in pro tools with DDMF metaplugin. Although I'm eager for aax, this will work. It's the reverb I've always wanted ITB. I can't get over how good it is.

these were a nice surprise to see, and that the price point they're probably done well. But for that flavor at that price point I always recommend a magic death eye. But they're hard to get too!

how close do the capsules sound to each other? can you use them as a stereo pair? I ask because I have a 3 452's - 2 with ck1 and one with a ck28. One of the ck1's is painfully bright, the other is really nice and just slightly "shiny" and the ck28 is very similar to the good ck1 but sweeter and smoother. I'd love a pair of good sounding ck1's that worked as a pair.

usually 47fet. sometimes 421, re15, re20, sm57. Always take a DI too, the music we do the DI is usually more important but not necessarily.

I have one. It's a very widely versatile good sounding eq. It does what it says on the tin without much fuss or calling attention to itself yet it preserves the quality you put into it.

the new-ish sennheiser MD445 is my favorite over all those you mentioned. My second favorite is the older MD431.
