I know this has been covered, but I’m lazy. What are quality headphones to buy? I’ve used cheaper AKG’s and DT770’s…but man, you can’t get any sense of what comes through the monitors with these. I’m redoing my room and I’m down for two weeks. Just thinking about getting a nicer pair of headphones.

I’m redoing my room and I’m down for two weeks. Just thinking about getting a nicer pair of headphones. Obviously so much of this comes down to taste. I like having a few different pairs to check on (Sennheiser HD6 Mix, Sennheiser HD600, AT M50) because they're all so different and yet good quality. If I can get a mix to work on all of those without driving me crazy, I know I'm in a good spot. I've been growing more curious about those Slate VSX headphones, though. Man, I haven't bought anything from Slate in a loooong time, but I've been hearing good things from people who have them. donr has a pair, I believe?

It’s so personal, is there anywhere there you can demo?
I have wasted big money buying more expensive headphones, that I never got on with.
I always go back to my not expensive Sony.

As I have 3 pairs of monitors, I now have various pairs of phones: Sennheiser 6xx (supposed to be 650), Sennheiser 580, AKG 7xx (supposed to be 702) & Sony 7506 (sound terrible but look at it like the phone equivalent of NS-10's).

I’m so intimate with my HD650s, I can get a lot done on them.

I had a buddy who swore on mixing on his HD600's. He bought em mostly because of on-line reviews. He bought em over one day and I listened to a mix I was doing. It was like stepping onto another planet. Insanely "off" to me. I could never use em to mix. Not sure how he could possibly get them to "translate". That's my $0.02. And that's all its worth.

Love my HD600s; neutral, and accurate. After using them, I can't stand the ATH M50s which were my go to headphones for years; now I am looking for a closed back tracking headhpone that's more similar to the HD600s.

I have 4 pairs of quality phones that I use all the time for different reasons. That said, the 2 most used, because of what they each allow me to focus on are...
Grado RS-1 Sennheiser HD 600's
I'm working on a album mix this week, 11 songs..... When I get things to sound correct & balanced on the HD-600's the mix sounds great on the ATC SCM 25A's GO figure?
I have pair of HD 650's still sealed in the box, never opened. Heard they are a bit different, from the 600's, so I'll probably never try them....

I use Sennheiser HD600's also, but have been starting to think about adding the Neumann NDH 30 open‑backs as another reference.
Does anyone using the Neumann NDH 30's have any feedback on them?

Bose QC35. Keep using them to listen to music and make calls after your room is fixed up.

One thing that helped me was to put a flat condenser mic up to the ear cups and run slow sine sweeps on my different headphones, watch the response. On each I saw masssive peaks and dips between 6k-12k, so I know that’s not my ears
After that, I put them on, turn them waaaaayyy down, then use tons of plugin EQ and make that slow sweep sound as flat as I can, to my ears. Thanks to the ear’s response, that basically means boosting low shelf a boat load, and subtracting some high mids, and really not much I can do for the 8k+ region
After this, listen to some music, do a little mixing. Then realize mixing anything above a certain frequency is just stupid.
quickly I bypassed all that crap, and I now use them for certain areas and just know not to mess with things in areas that don’t work. Strangely it did help in a weird way.

I never trusted headphones for any serious work but once I got Sonarworks, I feel like I can get a lot done on cans. And I don’t own anything special - cheap audio technicas (m50/m30) and a pair of 7506s.
I still probably wouldn’t trust them for a final mix but def usable getting into that ballpark or editing work. Hell, I’ve even done some fine tuning w them.

To clarify, I’m not talking the fancy custom sonarworks product where you have to send them your headphones or whatever. This is just the standard models/corrections they have

There's a store called B&H in Manhattan that has a demo wall full of headphones. When I bought my headphones, I was able to try more than twenty different brands. Prices ranged from $49 to $600.
After all that, I chose the ubiquitous $99 Sony 7506. Even though they're bright, my mixes worked well when I used them. I mostly use headphones to double check things like setting levels, sound staging, and comping a vocal, and then switch to speakers to finish.
I guess they are kind of like the headphone equivalent of NS-10's, they just work, don't ask me why.

I've had some 650's, sorry but I didn't trust them to mix on. The ATH-R70X's (Audio Technica's) I own are better but still a bit "soft" overall, DT770X's are good but I settled on the Beyer DT 700's pro X, they sound relatively similar to my monitors (just slightly worse) which in the world of headphones is a high compliment. Also they're great for tracking too..

Shure 940. Amazing stereo field. I can hear reverb details with these that I can't with anything else (AKG, Sony, Sennheiser 650, AT, et. al.).
Headphones are super personal, so try to audition as many as you can. But you know that.

I felt the same way about the HD-650. They sounded like I had stuffed cotton into my ears. Really dull/truncated top end. I know lots of folks love them, tho. I will say they were a comfy fit. I sold them after a couple of weeks; just no way could I get anything from those. -09

(Best John-ahem-Bob Denver/Gilligan voice) "Not only are 7506's ubiquitous MJB" "But they're everywhere!"
I use AKG 240DF/240 Studio/Sony MDR-V6 mainly.
V6's are the somewhat mellower fraternal twin of the 7506. Jim Williams likes them. Chris

I bought the neumanns last year without intention of doing real work on them but just for monitoring and emergencies, but I've made some good mixes on them! you just have to learn how they sound but I was surprised how easy it is to do real work with them.

HD600 is light and comfortable over long time plus sounds good and neutral enough. Ofcourse lacking in bass.
BUT mixing solely on headphones don't work IME. Does not translate.
Maybe it's a good thing because I dont don't think having a wide frequency spectrum music so close to the eardrum is very wise.
I once had the Audeze LCD-X, which has extended low end. Did not work for me, heavy and uncomfortable bass, but then again, I was fresh at mixing then, so maybe my compentance was the big factor. They are praised in HI-FI circles.

STAX electrostatics, the mids will make you think the ATC s is distorting. Even the Mono Price ESL’s are great but the Amp sucks.

Another vote for HD600's
They are the closest I've ever used to sounding like decent studio monitors.
I never mix on headphones, I only use mine to check bass as another reference but if I had to mix on headphones they'd be my first choice.

I started out with HD650's which I also found neutral yet detailed.
However, on recommendation from a friend I later bought AKG K712 Pro's for their beefier low end - they took some getting used to (weird suck-out at 3kHz) but after passing them through the dedicated Sonarworks EQ profile they ended up sounding similar to both my ATC SCM10 Pro loudspeakers and the Sennheiser HD650 so I'm well happy.
