My Apollo 16MkII has been rock solid so far, more than I can say for my Apogee element, but I still don't love the dual mixer thing. It is nice to be able to do an overdub in a mix session, but other wise I miss just dealing with everything in Pro Tools. For years I used a SSLMadi/Alphalink setup with PT, all native and had no issues tracking at 64. Thats with up to 24 inputs going, sending 16 channels out to my cue system, and generally with a handful of plugins. When I moved to PT11, I started getting lots of errors when trying to track at 64, and would also get some at 128. So far, no version of 11 or 12 has fixed that. Way back I did the dual mixer thing, first with RME, then with a Metric Halo 2882 2d, both of those have much better routing options than the Apollo console. I'd love to see how other people are setting up the Apollo for band tracking, say 4 players, and dealing with having 2 mix's going. I can deal with it when I'm by myself, but so far I don't love it for anything more than that.

Think you, i will take a look at the Apollo vid.....I'm not sure if i will take the Apollo8P or the Antelope Discrete 8. I don't need a full band mix, i'm by myself tracking drums with PT.... Any advice.
Thank you

Do you have OB pres or do you want to use the apollo unison feature ? Right now no OB , but i used the Daking1V before and like it, so i might try to A/B test these with the Apollo unison, idealy would be only the Apollo pre's. !!!!!! Thank you

Guitfiddler, you have both a Dangerous Convert A/D + AND a Burl Bomber A/D? If you do, which is your preference for vocals and guitars? I don’t have the Burl B2 A/D. I have the Dangerous A/D Convert +. The plan is to get the Burl B2 and compare it to the Convert. Use both B2 & Convert for tracking the money tracks. Not sure about the backend D/A yet. Just using Dangerous Source or Dangerous D-Box for now. The Apollo hooked to the Dbox is a nice setup, but hearing the BF Mk2 is so good sounding you don’t need a Dbox. We will see...

There was a learning curve and it took some getting used to but I am lightning fast with it now. I've heard other engineers say that they think this type of setup is unworkable, but I think it's great and bands are amazed at how fast we get work done. I might be able to give some tips; what kind of issues are you having with it specifically?

Guitfiddler, definitely looking forward to your Burl/Dangerous comparison. By the time I can afford to upgrade, if I can get the Pro-Ject D/A hooked up properly, then the Burl or the Dangerous at the front end would eliminate any Apollo conversion, correct? Which one would be the main clock, the Burl?
When I tried the Burl for a week, I liked it, and I like the clock.

For those of you wanting Apollo workflow but the sonics of a different converter, why not just pick up a used SF Apollo Quad on the cheap and then just run whatever converters you want in via adat?
What do used SF Quad Apollos go for these days? Maybe a $1000? I mean, a used Quad Satellite goes for $500 these days. A SF Quad Apollo wouldn't be much more.

What exactly is it that you guys don’t like about the Apollo’s conversion? And what is a money track? All my tracks have to be money. Even the shaker. I mean wouldn’t you want the shaker to have all the depth the Burl can offer? Of course I’m being a little sarcastic here, but there are so many other variables that can affect recordings besides conversion. Like stand 2 feet closer to a wall, or put up a different mic. I guess I’m being a little defensive because I really do like the tracks I do with my Apollo. So what’s it missing, or what am I missing here?

I can deal with it when I'm by myself, but so far I don't love it for anything more than that. I have 2x Apollo 8's hooked up to a Behringer PowerPlay system with 16 optical inputs as follows: One optical out of one Apollo with 8 channels I use for playback of already tecorded tracks. I send to these putputs from groups I have in my session template. The optical out of the second Apollo I output from the Console 4 cue mixes with zero latency. If I need more than 4 sources I can pan left and right in the cue sends and that way I have 8 separate channels. Artists do their own mix on the personal mixers and it works great. No latency issues at all.

Don’t really want to put $1000 into old tech. I used to own an Apollo first version silverface firewire, and even with my AD16X going in lightpipe and clocked to it, it still sounded like garbage! I still think something was wrong with that interface. I tried everything and just wasn’t happy with it. That is why I was very slow at coming back to UA and bought 16mk2 to see what all the new 2.0 software/Thunderbolt, and chatter was all about. I hear so many people saying things that I wanted to hear on the first version box, but...ugh. I already had 3/4 of all UA plugins sitting on my drive dormant because I sold out and really missed the workflow and the curiosity got the best of me. Hopefully, the first take I make on the drums will satisfy!

Shit, I loved my SF Apollo. It smoked the BLA Signature 003 I'd been using and I just loved it (the SF). The BF was a significant step up and its conversion ain't gonna hold anyone back. Yes, I think the Symphony MKII sounds better but it's way more money for way less functionality.

I’ve been very satisfied with the Drum sounds I’ve been getting with the BF Apollo guitfiddler - liked the old SF too, but yeah, the BF is definitely a big step up to me. Maybe you did have a defective one

I have an 8p & 16 mk2 on the way, I’m just going to work it because I missed the workflow tremendously, and hopefully it’s 50% better than the silverface when clocked to my convert!

If your AD16 via lightpipe sounded bad it's hard for me to imagine that the Apollo had anything to do with it.

If your AD16 via lightpipe sounded bad it's hard for me to imagine that the Apollo had anything to do with it. It was so bad I couldn’t handle it. I was hoping to replace my aging 16x system, but my ears were to accustomed to the Apogee 16X. It was a step down, and not a step up. It sounded like everything was pillowy and over driven like a gain staging problem. The width was screwed up, no width in a stereo track, and mushy. No headroom!

Maybe the monitor outs of the Apollo you didn't like?

The reason I got rid of it and just went back to the Symphony 16X system. Even when I went in through light pipe from the 16X it wasn't as good as when I just took it out of the loop altogether. I have a feeling that the newer Blackface setup will be more in my wheelhouse. Now to put this to bed, I have music to work on, not sound/interface issues to work on.

I think something was wrong with your Apollo unit guitfiddler. The history here at realgear is some of the regulars at a massive Apollo thread at the purple site with well over a million views, like me, kcat, Ragan, and others, followed cowboycoalminer here to get away from the nonsense there.
When the silver face Apollo was introduced, we were all impressed with the flexibility and potential sound quality. Certainly nothing about the Apollo then prevented us from producing high quality tracks. I did this track completely with the silver face Apollo. I wasn't as aware of DAW recording techniques as I am today, but I think it shows there's nothing wrong with those original Apollo interfaces.
You guys have heard this, but I almost forgot to say this is M57 on piano and "accordion", Henge on bass, and cowboycoalminer on pedal steel! The RGO All Stars!
* Man, I underestimated the Blackspade UM17R a bit. It really sounds good on this track. I sold it because a vintage U67 and U47 sounded better on my voice, and I'm still pursuing that kind of sound. Hopefully the Stam SA67 will finally get me there.
