For some reason unbeknownst to me I bought an AKG BX-5 spring reverb on Reverb. One of the few (of the popular ones, anyway) rack mount spring reverbs I haven't tried. The only BX5 I ever got to spend any time with was an absolute dog, I don’t know what the guy did to it, it turned me off springs for ages. The last couple I have heard sound nothing like it so my fingers are crossed on this one. A friend of mine recently had one and said “it’s the worst sounding reverb I’ve ever heard” 😆 But other people seem to like them. The randomness of springs and plates (and chambers for that matter) is what I like…they all sound different even model to model. Those types of reverbs, and the rooms themselves, used to be the identifiable characteristics of studios, whereas everyone’s UAD EMT 140 sounds identical

I think it’s clear that you’re not just noticing you can do better work but are enjoying listening to music which to me is well worth the cost.
I think the Trinnov is going to be the move for me at home…I have a shit ton of treatment and even with the help of some consultations it’s still weird/not enjoyable just because of the physical dimensions and layout of the space and I can’t (or not willing) to do construction to fix that.
And all the room treatment makes the space feel even smaller and kind of like shit and I don’t want to be down there

I've been selling a lot of stuff I wasn't using or was a bit redundant with other things I had and reinvested the money in some microphones:
Neumann U47FET Reissue Coles 4038 matched pair Sony C38B
I think those are all forever microphones that will get a lot of use at the studio...definitely more than the rack gear that was sitting on the floor in my basement!

SPL Vitalizer Mk2-t hardware
Pretty much my go to brightening device now. I'm surprised how much smoother the brightening is then on my other analog EQ's. Maybe cause the slope is so wide, in any case it's definitely an extremely natural sounding enhancement and realling bringing certain tracks in a session to life. Super happy with this thing I wasn't sure if I was going to like it but its great. Especially elec guitars they become brighter and just sound like they were recorded that way, doesn't sound EQ'd.
That's cool to hear! I've always liked those devices, I'm a big "exciter" fan in general. I think I might try and track one down

Johnkenn did you move your monitors based on where the software suggested? Er…does it suggest? It corrects for that, I thought. I would think that if it tells you that, say, your left speaker is 2" further back than your right, if you physically corrected that and re-scanned (or whatever its called) it would only be more accurate/less processing required. But I could be wrong!

So many questions, so many concerns, one things for sure.. epic, epic sound I picked up the tape machine and they gave me the console! Don’t have a use for it really but going to try and find it a good home There were some beautiful Tannoy Eaton monitors in the wall but the real estate agent wouldn’t let me take them…selling them with the house. Maybe they’ll call and let me have them if the new owner doesn’t want them

I've been re-evaluating a lot of my outboard and trying to sell a few things but very tempted to pull the trigger on a Neumann U47FET reissue. I know there are many great alternatives that are cheaper (and probably in some ways better) but there's definitely the psychology of the "real thing" and not clones at the studio I've run into many times. Same with a pair of Coles 4038’s…which I do like but don’t necessarily feel I need but it gets regularly asked for. The clones are quickly becoming so prevalent and ubiquitous that soon, only an old school experienced engineer will know the difference between a clone and the real thing. These days, it's SOOO common to ask : "do you guys have a Neumann U47?" Studio will answer to the affirmative, and when the client shows up and asks for it to be put on the stand - up comes a Warm 47 or a Stam 47 or a Wunder 47 or a Flea 47 or even a.....gasp....Slate modeled 47. Pretty soon the clone will essentially BE the real thing. My prediction..... Yeah I don't think it's reasonable to expect 99.9% of the individuals who make their living in the studio business to have a real U47. But, I think a U47FET is right on that line of not unattainable, holds it value, and there's one at most every tracking studio in Nashville and they are kind of expected

Dig the Shadow/Serpent Audio SB4000...seemed to add the most excitement without getting as "pumpy" like the Stam or Tegeler (I know some people like that sound, but it's not for me). The Tierra seems the most neutral. Didn't really care for any of the others personally.

Groove Tubes Model 2 When I showed interest my friend offered it to me for $200.00 Like new with dual power supply and GT tube. Couldn't pass. Just ordered some Elna Selmic II music Caps. Only 3 needed for the recap. <button disabled="" class="c-attachment-insert--linked o-btn--sm">Attachment Deleted</button> Those are GREAT microphones. I have a pair of MD3's and they really blew me away. I'm pretty sure the Model 2 uses a Josephson capsule as well. I put my MD3 side by side with my Klaus tuned U67 reissue and they are freakishly close, the U67 just has a touch more top end. I thought I was doing something wrong when they almost phase cancelled each other other I had to have my studio partner come and hear it to make sure I was doing something wrong! I think you'll be really happy with it.

Putting up a few pieces of gear for sale or trade. All work wonderfully, and all things I bought for a reason (they sound good), but just looking to change things up for a bit of inspiration.
DBX 162: Stereo compressor that’s great on a drum buss, overheads or stereo percussion in particular. Comes with XLR pig tails. Asking $1500 Pair of AML 54F50.: The best Neve 2254 on the market. It takes up 3 spaces in a 500 series rack because each are stuffed with 4 Carnhill transformers. These add a wonderful weight to anything you run them through. I enjoy using them on bass, drums, mix buss, and dare I say banjo. Asking $1000 each or $1900 for the pair.
John Hardy M-2 Stereo Preamp: These preamps are incredibly hard to beat. Clean without being sterile thanks to the Jensen input and output transformers, they also have incredibly useful meters that can switch from peak and VU. The M-2 has stepped gain pots, otherwise identical to the M-1. Asking $1500
SPL Transient Designer 2: A studio stable, I have a 4 channel unit otherwise I’d keep these. Amazing for shaping drums but equally useful on synths, pianos, reverbs, or anything you want to increase or decrease sustain or attack. Asking $500
DBX 900 Series Rack: (2) DBX 902 de-essers, (2) Audio Upgrades modified Aphex Expressors, and a DBX 411 noise reduction unit I’ve wired up to do a “Dolby A Trick” high end exciter. The 902’s are studio stables, the Expressors are able to do a lot of gain reduction without being heard, and the 411 can really bring a dull snare or muddy vocal to life. Asking $600 for everything
Orange AD5: English made Class A 1x10” 5 watt combo. Great studio amp or hook it up to a cabinet and it can really scream. Asking $500
Orange PPC112 1x12 Cabinet: Like new, Celestion V30 16 ohm speaker. Bought it to use with a Hiwatt head but ended up getting a matching cabinet. Asking $300
Gretsch Full Range 6.5x14 snare with wood hoops. Brand new Evans G1 coated and Evans 300 snare side head. Asking $300

From what I understand even in "low latency" mode the latency with the Trinnov is too much to track with and you have to bypass it (which apparently is easy to do in their app). But maybe there's some sort of work around.

Everyone hears things differently, or rather wants to hear different things out of different sources. With acoustic music usually everyone wants their instrument to be warmer/boomier (guitar players want to hear the low E string, mandolin players want to hear the “beef” or “woof”, fiddle players don’t want to hear that much top end, banjo players want it too loud) and you have to find that compromise because not everything can have a bunch of 100 to 300Hz that might sound great when the instrument is solo’d, but a mess in context. With pop/rock music, it’s always trying to be more “in your face” or “jumping out of the speakers” which means different things to different people
And in a lot of cases I send people what I consider a 80% done mix and sometimes they love it, and other times it gets you the notes you need to get them happy. And when you get those snide comments try not to let it bother you, because usually you aren’t as far away as you think you just aren’t featuring some element of the songs the artist values more than you
Also, I don’t know about this case, but the less talent/less budget people have can often equal unrealistic expectations of what their music can sound like. The studio isn’t what takes you from playing a pizza parlor to an arena

Well, I did it. Should be here next week, but I’ll be out of town until the first. Then I’ve got to figure out how to use it. Interested to hear your thoughts! I was close to pulling the trigger, did some rearranging, made some progress with the way the room sounds, and then after talking with a friend I’m going to do some construction, which is still less than a Trinnov. Who knows…maybe I’ll still need a Trinnov…but right now having so many panels in a small room is pretty claustrophobic and make the room (especially the ceiling) too low. Finding that compromise between a good sounding room and an inspiring room has been my biggest struggle for sure

OldTimer and Rvox or Rcomp are probably my most used compressors. OldTimer is zero latency, which an awesome feature as well. I don't know how demanding the InfiniStrip but it might be a good one to check out

Yeah money is taken out of your account and into there, they give you a fake tracking number, and you’re out the money for a couple weeks while PayPal/Reverb/your credit card company tries to get it resolved.
