That’s a good cable as well. You’re going to find bigger differences with cable lengths than with cable brands, in my experience.

Thanks Stormy, I realize now the hum is from the amp, you’re right. I do know that guitar cables can have a slightly different tone, but I do wonder if perhaps some hum more than others. No, unless they are badly broken and the shielding is not connected, or something like that. What’s the guitar/amp?

If you want high end manufacturing and reasonable price, I'd recommend Lava Cable. However, the cable will have zero effect on the hum. Either your amp/pickups hum or they don't. Hum is 60 Hz noise and it will be transmitted with high fidelity by any guitar cable, even lousy ones. Capacitance of the cable will only affect the high-end frequencies.
The cables sold by Fender under the "custom" moniker or something (Tweed and Black colors) are really good, affordable, rugged and you can get them in various lenghts. I use them in the studio every day. I'd buy those.
Edit: I use the coily Lava Cable with my Teye guitar as recommended by the builder himself (Teye), because it emphasizes the mid frequencies a bit. And I use Lava Cable for the pedalboards, but I don't hesitate throwing in some other cables if needed.

Yeah either RND or the Roger Mayer are definitely in my future. It would be good to demo them side by side. I’d be happy to run some tracks through my 542’s for you if you want. 1-year bump!!! I completely forgot to reply. I’ll definitely send you some tracks if you still have the units. I’m trying to get a couple of free spaces in my small 500 rack. Maybe I’ll be able to get the Roger Mayer on tryout.

I'm a happy Weight Tank user and I have my sights set on buying a Locomotive 14B in the next couple of months (hopefully!). The idea is to use it as a dedicated vocal compressor. I was also thinking of some kind of LA2A, or maybe a Sta Level. However, I like what I read/hear about the 14B, and now that there's a PCB version, it's a lot more affordable. Who's got one? How much do you LOVE it?

Very informative video! I was surprised at the differences between solo and mixed. I'd make completely different choices based on one context or the other. Any of those mics would be a good choice, really. The JZ was surprisingly good in the mix.

I don't have direct experience with them but if you are considering 414s maybe you could consider Austrian Audio. They've gotten great reviews. austrian.audio/oc818/Also, not what you're looking for, but for all those instruments except acoustic guitar, I'd break out my pair of Stager SR-2N. Drums too.

So which one do I need for the lead vocal? I want to say Optó because LA2A is such a classic choice. I’m already tracking with a U67 into a Tree Audio The Branch or Heritage TT-73.

Yeah downloaded the Avid Control app. Haven’t tried yet...but since I go between 4 different daws, I’ll probably have to settle with a numeric keyboard. Get the small Behringer. The transport is great and you get a fader to write automation with.

There is a long-standing bug with Logic automation but Logic is very far from being “broken”, no matter how loud some people complain in other forums.
In any case, it’s irrelevant for this question. If the automation is broken, it’s broken all the time: in the session and in the print.
I hope Apple will fix that bug too, so the people affected can mix confidently. And me too! I like to trust the software 100% and that’s not happening with Logic even if the bug is not affecting me.

Make sure your master/output is not clipping, and make sure you are listening at the exact same volume through the same interface output. I think you'll find the sound is the same.

That's easy to verify. Import the WAV into a track, flip the phase, and you should get total silence, unless you are using analog inserts or plugins that randomize things.
I use Logic myself, never run into a problem. How are you listening to the WAV?

I might be able to take a listen tomorrow. However, in my experience with attended mastering on a couple of the top mastering houses in Europe, great mastering engineers rarely do a whole lot and never comment on the mixes -or the work they are doing to them- unless prodded.

Worth posting in this thread. Thanks for that! It looks like I'll be keeping the stock tube after all! :-) (well unless I come across a very decently priced NOS, that is) Before I bought the mic, I tested it extensively - and tried my best to buy something else! I understand what has been explained about why the tube matters so much in this circuit. Right now, I don't find a problem with the low end or high end of my U67 - or the midrange. I would need to make some tests, but more end would possibly be a problem. Those of you that swapped tubes, what problems did you fix with the tube swap?

As for the S2 question, yes, you can snip it. The reissue only differs from the original in the headbasket assembly, because it uses the current one (same as U87 Ai).
Who likes current production Neumann mics? Ask Al Schmitt. I think he’s done a few records...
