I've been eyeing the various incarnations of this processor for a while (mono, half rack, etc.) It recently came out in 500-series format, and there's finally a video demo!
What do you guys think?

Maybe this will get Handsome Audio off of high center and get them to finally release the long ago announced Zulu Modular. Competition has that effect.
I'd like to hear more about this 456 thing though. It seems interesting, though it also looks like it will be more expensive than the Zulu.

Hard to know without proper level matching. It's too easy to get fooled without it. Sounds promising though. I do like the simplistic interface. Tape was never meant to be "tweaky" IMO.

I don’t blame them for wanting to make it a more dramatic effect, they need to sell products, ha. The black white video that turns color when they click it on is pretty good subconscious marketing.

I'm interested to see how it stacks up against the RND 542, which I think are awesome.

I completely forgot to reply. I’ll definitely send you some tracks if you still have the units. I’m trying to get a couple of free spaces in my small 500 rack. Maybe I’ll be able to get the Roger Mayer on tryout.

Will do, thanks! What’s your preferred use? Drum buss? Stereo buss?

Will do, thanks! What’s your preferred use? Drum buss? Stereo buss? These days I use them a lot on heavy distorted guitars. But they kick ass on drum buss too. They also see a fair amount of use in the master bus but it really depends on the song. It’s not the type of piece you can slap on a bus towards the end of a mix and expect magic. It’ll sound too heavy handed if you do that. But, much like with bus compression, if you mix into them from the start it sounds great. Oh yeah...vocals....they’re awesome for adding weight and density to vocals.

I have eight channels (four stereo units) of the Bereich Density and another four channels (two stereo units) coming. I like them a lot. I had been kicking around getting a few channels of the Sound Skulptor TS500, but then I just decided that I wanted it all to be the same, just as would be the case with a real tape machine. I think there's a lot of advantage in having something that does that "thing" well and does it while not creating option paralysis. Having to pick between the Density and TS500 during tracking would just create unnecessary complications. I already do that with preamps and comps/eqs, as it is. Another nice thing about the Density is that it is 100% switch based. So it's super easy to recall and the VUs provide some nice feedback on your overall added saturation levels. It's nice to just have simple options on these. I mean, it's not like you would endlessly tweak a tape machine once you got it setup. Once the rest of my units arrive, I'm looking forward to being able to use these in a full live band tracking scenario. It should be a fun little experiment.

Sounds like what the UAD ATR-102 does when you have it on the default setting. Little mid dip, low boost where the bass drum lives, etc...
