Saw a video editors one where they tested the high power mode and whilst it made a difference and tripped the fans etc, it didn't make a crazy leap in performance i.e. my impression (excuse the faded memory ) was no more than around 5 - 7% difference. Again , my impression is that you'd need to be throwing the kitchen sink at it to need that kind of power. Cheers, Ross

Thanks tim,- cogent , to the point, relevant to music people; for mine this is probably the best of the Youtube vids if you're trying to decide about these machines - he says he'll be making another about which model M chipped mac is right for individual needs so that should be worthwhile viewing for someone like me , still deciding. Cheers, Ross

But if you're thinking you need more power, dont they want you to go Mac pro when it arrives? Cheers, Ross

I wouldn't hold my breath for a mini pro; as i've said before it would pirate sales from their i-Mac Pro / Laptop M1 x and Mac pro . IMO a mini is cool at what it is but of course I could well be wrong. Cheers, Ross

Don't get too antsy guys; while Drew's figures were a bit askew; there is a real point here. There is no way most of us can attain hardware land so from what I heard the UAD stuff did a great job albeit with that bit missing which is to be expected from digital emulations. It seems UAD are ripe to be kicked these days which to my mind is a little off - if we could be objective; they've provided a hell of a lot in the last few years; not always perfect but often a lot better than most. My $.02 FWIW Cheers, Ross

Any one got anything to relate about the UAD X4 -(good and bad). I'm in the throes of re-vamping my eqpt and the portable nature of the X4 is enticing not to mention it has inbuilt quad DSP.
Is it truly up to the audio standard of the rack units ? Saw a mention of them getting hot; is that an issue?
It would mean committing to Luna, how is Luna for editing recorded tracks?
My other option is to re-invest in Tools (i'm currently still on PT 10) ; using my Prism Titan and getting at least a thunderbolt quad satellite for the plugs I'm currently running on a firewire satellite. The subscription thing is bugging me though.....
(Still chewing over the computor - either a 16" M 1 MBP - pricey but portable; or a current mac mini which would appear to be up to the task at half the price.)
Thanks for reading; i'm thinking out loud a little here but if anyone's got anything to add re the X4 particularly, I'd be happy to hear it . - all opinions welcome.
Cheers, Ross

Had a listen and the comparison was interesting; I did prefer the neve console in all situations but the UAD stuff was very similar just slightly missing a cohesive warmth relative to the Neve. Cheers, Ross

Mike, i'm thinking if you need to work on the couch, they're fast enough to drag the project from external to on board in no time , work with the internal drive then drag off the up-date back to external when back in the studio rather than worry about carting an SSD and lead (sounds like a 1st world problem as they are light as a feather!). In fact I'd probably keep up to date back ups of current projects i could use in an on-board partition anyway. As to what external - I've no idea, it's hypothetical till I make the jump. With good house keeping and a fast external, 512 internal is a very useable amount if you're not a high profile commercial facility IME

Onya John, we wait with bated breath to hear what you think. The 16 has better thermal efficiency , better speakers (might be great for mix checking) and of course bigger screen - handy if you use it as a secondary screen or do remote work and I assume you've gone for the 10 core CPU. Are you working in 'Tools and is it compatible with Catalina? cheers, Ross

Do you need it; if not save the money for something you really need or your family - they are a good everyday mic but it wont butter your toast or make your bed or win you a grammy and you've already got some fine mics. And yes i own one and like it. Cheers, Ross

It certainly appears that the max is aimed at creators working with large visual projects and apart from large VI library users, the max is money most of us in audio don't need to spend. Cheers, Ross

If it's the sound you make , technically it possibly won't matter what mic or how you place it. Try a little gum to fill holes between teeth that may be causing it. Cheers, Ross

For me Pro 16 gig ram / 1 terrabyte. I speculate that a "Pro" mini wont arrive soon if ever because it'll stop people purchasing the high end MBP / i-Mac / Mac Pros and there's no way they'd want that.
Cheers, Ross
