I’ve never actually owned one believe it or not…but every time I sing in one I’m shocked at how good it sounds. Maybe it’s particularly my voice. Just takes that edge off of it.

I have found it to be a very helpful mic to have around. It has matched or surpassed some much more expensive mics on more than one occasion for me.
Also worth it to try an RE-20 and an M88.

I was just listening to "Shelter" by Ray LaMontagne and remarking to myself how much more soulful his voice sounded through the SM7 on that record as versus his "God Willin The Creek Don't Rise" where vox were through a Neumann M49. Too crisp. If you have the right voice the SM7 is the tool. But you have to give it a chance and lsten to it in a mix. It's a little bit of an adjustment after all of these LDCs.

Great mic! I've bought and sold two of them, but would like to buy a third one eventually. Haha this sounds like a John Kenn thing to do (just kidding you.) Some of my better songs were tracked with SM7B and they seem to work on almost anyone.

It'd be hard regretting that purchase. So, go ahead!

I have to say, I would skip it. I have one, and my mic collection is pretty modest, but I'd go for the above mentioned RE20 or DEFINITELY the M88 before an SM7...I've tried to like it, but it NEVER wins a shootout...with anything, really. Could be all happenstance based on the sources/other mics I had at the time, but I just can't really say I've ever thought it sounded good.
On the other hand, I've put the M88 up plenty of times thinking "nah, couldn't be"...never been disappointed. Smooth, takes EQ, etc. My 545 shures, 635a, Beyer M500s and more have all beat the SM7. I've heard it's cool on snare, haven't tried it there...

I have a friend that did not like all of the LDC's that he had used, he has a midrangey edge issue at times. I suggested a SM7b, and he is in love. He thinks his voice now sounds like a "finished record" - and won't use anything else

I mean “Thriller” was made with one so…….🙄 Only some of the songs, on the previous model, etc…. It is not my first call for anything, but there are random situations where it worked in retrospect or unexpectedly wins a shootout, which is why I have one that hasn’t gotten used lately but can’t bring myself to sell it.

Same boat here. Haven't ever owned one, but I love the way they sound, and it would admittedly be really helpful to have one on hand. Every time the opportunity to buy one comes up, I always start looking for more exciting mics/outboard/whatever. I don't know why I keep holding off.

It works fine with 95% of pop/rock singers you’ve never heard who come into your studio for a fast demo session. It sounds great on a surprisingly high percentage. Can’t be said of any LDC I’ve ever had, you gotta demo those and see what fits. If it works on your voice, it’s a good tool to have around. One record I played on used one for bass amp and one for guitar amp, no complaints there either. And I can’t stand a 57 on a guitar amp.

In the Netflix Bruce Springsteen special where the E Street band reunites, he's singing through an SM7b without the pop filter for the whole album. I've never used one, but they sound good through a real Neve board.
Ya never know til you try it. Paul Rogers once asked before a recording session where "his" mic was. They had beautiful vintage mics there. He didn't know what mic it actually was, so the producer called the studio where he did his famous Bad Company tracks and was told it was an SM57. Imagine that.

Love my SM7b. Contrary to some others, it works far better than RE20s and M88s on my voice.

I mean “Thriller” was made with one so…….🙄 I think it was an original - not a B. I've got an original and it's a cool mic. I'd say give it a try John. Especially if you can find one of the originals. <thumbsup>

Um...go by one? Decide you want edge on it? Slate's freebies: Fresh Aire or Revival will take care of that.

My SM7b is parked on a stand where it can quickly swivel between a Princeton Reverb and a Vibro Champ even as I type this.

Reasons to buy one: - very good resale value - works well on rock shouters - versatile--nice on amps and kick drum too - rightly or wrongly some clients worship them - kind of idiot proof--durable and hard to screw up a vocal
Reasons not to buy: - it's not likely to be your all time favorite - low mids can sound full or muddy depending on what mood you're in - you might need to buy a Cloudlifter

For the price it’s a no brainer to have around. I had one sold it then bought it again. Using one on a track right now, beat out a u67 on vocals. I also find it really comfortable to sing into, and I always leave the the foam on.

- John won't need a Cloudlifter with the pres he's got. Honestly, anyone who has good preamps really shouldn't need a Cloudlifter.
