For me, BriceJchandler made a most salient point when he talked about how hard it is to make decisions live when in the same room as the band - It's truly necessary to have individual recording channels fed by quality pres so you can trust what's going to "tape" is good enough to allow you to make decisions after the fact which kind of obviates the need for a desk unless you want the specific sound of that desk which you're not going to find in an affordable piece I wouldn't think.
I reckon we've all given you a lot to think on.

We're all pitching in with opinions Martin so here are mine - given that a console will be a bit of a finance soak and you already have 2 good preamps with 2 more on the X6; I'd go a quality ADAT 8 channel such as the Audient (not that I've used it - so purely dreaming here too} , save on money, space and possible maintenance worries. Being realistic, recording an ensemble would probably still be a smaller part of your operation so the 12 pres would be enough to cut that well when needed without over stretching the budget thus allowing you to do probably more important stuff such as room treatment, headphones, monitors, mics, leads etc (they really add up), etc. Of course I understand your dreaming...... Hi brenta; got an HP monitor in the boxing day sales 31.5" which is a great size, for Australian $389 - $130 off. Only has HDMI and VGA so not wildly sophisticated but it works well off my ageing 17" MBP and did I mention the size? - perfect. Cheers, Ross

Not purchasing until a new mini iteration is out as it may have more on board connections that I require and thus save me buying a dock; I've currently a very cheap 4 port USB hub which takes those low power things - i-lok, keyboard etc and which would work with a mini. The OWC T/B 3 dock as opposed to the T/B 4 has more USB connections which can be a good option depending on needs and finances.. Trusting that my current machine hangs in till then. Cheers, Ross

Yes, the R70 x's are a very nice can and super comfortable. The bottom end is very believable, the top end a little too polite for my tired ears (that's no fault of the can of course}/ Cheers, Ross

Beyer have a new 700 (closed back) which is a revamp of the 770 as I understand - might be worth a look Not to diss other opinions but the much vaunted ATH M 50s have a pronounced bottom end which can be misleading. (assuming their signature is the same as when I owned them) Cheers, Ross

I've been running PT 10 native forever with access to 11 if I wanted but 10 was almost glitch free so I stayed; I'm about to buy a Silicon Mac of some description when PT is certified silicon compliant So what are my options without having to purchase the subscription model. (I'm keen to just buy a once off reliable PT version and get 5 years out of it, much as I've done with PT 10.) Cheers, Ross

Easy for me to chime in now all is revealed ....... my take is B is the happy medium with an overall smoothness without peaks; A is 2nd fave and sounds good but has that bottom end bloom thing going on and C sounds a little thin relatively. The mic seems to be pretty cool but your voice is very smooth so hard to really know. Cheers, Ross

No argument with your way of working Jeremy - sounds right to me , especially the 3 drives bit. I have 2 time machine drives which I institute after every major piece of work (could be after a good take or a major mix move) and definitely when taking a break Cheers, Ross

Just bought a couple of Samsung SSD T7s (USB C ) in boxing day sale (different colours so I can tell 'em apart) $129 ea AUD for 500 gigs. haven't tried them but I'm sure they are fine for my needs. Will use them as main drives on a new Mac and back up to the on board as well as a 2 TB spinner. Cheers, Ross

As is my wont; still trawling the 'net for relevant info re up coming purchase decisions and came across this real world ProTools Answers 8 gig ram 256 SSD Mac mini stress test. Quite unbelievable really; again , for safety chuck in 16 gig ram and a larger SSD and it'd be totally golden. Cheers, Ross

I reckon for many of us 16 gigs is fine especially as swap memory is not the bogey it was thought to be.
Not sure which machine i'll get but won't need more than a 512 Gig on board drive. Given I'm not doing more than 4-5 full on commercial projects a year, will record to 512gig outboard SSDs and retire them every couple of years which obviates any on board swap memory cell losses even more.
Cheers, Ross

Guys, this fellow Mark Payne has explained this whole "issue' of SSD write / swap memory degradation in a technical yet understandable way which is well worth a look. Hint: there's little to worry about. Enjoy.

Some of us may use the computer more than the bloke above but I suspect most won't so the M1 mini seems a great choice. If you need more go for the larger machines like m1x or wait for next year's model; to expect a mini to do 200 orchestral tracks is like asking the High school running champ to compete with Usain Bolt. Cheers, Ross

Your take on the M88 is correct IME jmoose; a great kick mic but ultimately the diaphragm gives way. The Shure 548 is a great mic if you can get one with a still great cap, Live they have presence but fidelity also. Cheers, Ross
