Yeah, on the surface Artist seems perfect for many of us doing the sort of productions that for example "Wiz" or JK are doing. (32 audio tracks, 16 at once) if anybody has any info to the contrary and can point out it's real world limitations please let us know cause I'm tempted when I upgrade computers - it's certainly affordable @ $99 USD / annum Cheers, Ross

The vocal is everything you'd hope for ; the acoustic sounds great - the slight boom at times being alluded to, sounds to me a little further away for the mic might have fixed it as would a dynamic eq on those spots. Great work John

Wow, 64 of ram - you've really gone for the doctor! With 2TB SSD you wont be 2nd guessing your machine that's for real.

As notneeson says, it should never be a prob with crackles/pops tracking to external drives and in fact would be the industry standard way. As to tracking to on board that also works and I do it when recording quick remote gigs and save files as back up to thumb drives. I have done a whole album that way of max 4 tracks at once with no signs of issues.
My preference though is to take the stress off the onboard 7200 spinner drive ( it's an old machine) and use an outboard - Firewire and USB. Ive no SSD experience which would be faster again.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Ross
P.S. was not using partitions

One thing I do know; if a computor of any description does it's job reliably and without fuss then I'm a happy camper. Could be P.C., could be Mac, it's all about not getting in the way of making music. Cheers, Ross

The mini has a strong internet history of being BT spotty - (I have no experience) something to do with the aerial effects of the full metal enclosure is how it is speculated. The emphasis is on "spotty" as some are fine. Who can tell. A USB dongle as in the MX "For everything" keyboard would obviate that "issue". Interestingly as I understand through reading, the "For Mac" version of the logitech keyboard comes without the dongle and the "for everything" version includes it .The Mac version is actually more to do with the colour scheme both versions will work on Mac. I like the idea of getting a USB dongle if I get a mini as if the BT decides to be spotty i'm not up S*** creek. Don't take anything I've said as gospel as I've no experience as yet , it's just pre purchase research etc, etc.

FWIW, I have a 945 and while it sounds smoother through the mids than a 58 , it has an extended top end which meeds heavy LPF in the live environment. My personal fave is the old Shure 548 which now sells for crazy prices. Cheers, Ross

Yes I've been sizing that pairing up Quint. let us know how you like the feel and functionality of that mouse - I've got 3 dead magic mice on my shelf ; sometimes they'll just go and go for a good while and then for an extended period they lose connection and i'm reduced to a stupid USB mouse where I can't swipe horizontally. Reasons for drop outs unexplained. Cheers, Ross

That "noise" query keeps on raising it's head here; apparently the fans are always on but all I see on line from those who push them hard is they're super quiet even under heavy load. Are there other experiences I haven't seen? Cheers, Ross

Thanks for that exhaustive info re your situation Wiz; it almost confirms i'm waiting for the Mini update if my 12 yr old MBP keeps on truckin' the way it is now. The only pain will be having to use a high priced dock (up to $500 AUD) - unless the Mini update includes a complement of ports similar to the Studio. Cheers, Ross

I concur with you Tony about the Studio being the "mini pro' ; if you made a true mini pro you'd steal a heap of Studio sales - doesn't make logical sense. What would make sense is an M2 mini with 24 gigs of ram........ plus some more ports; that'd fill a gap!

Hey John , you don't use the panel of the laptop to have mix view (or edit view) open at all times ?
and are you finding 16 gigs not enough?
A question for the owners ; is the Studio's fan actually noticeable or are we just hypothesising?
Cheers, Ross

Yes Winetree, the ports on the studio could in most instances negate the need for an expensive , desk cluttering dock. It's certainly a factor in my decisions going forward. Cheers, Ross

I saw a vid (don't know if it's the one above) that stressed The Studio, and it's thermal reaction was, "Ho Hum bring it on....", so in a music situation it would appear to be an absolute non issue. Cheers, Ross

Yes Eric compatibility does become an issue - I'm on a 2010 17" MBP laptop still running seriously reliable Snow Leopard but I cant run heaps of current plugs etc, etc so it's now time but I've certainly had my moneys worth and thus I'll buy another Mac . perhaps 16 Gig mini or 32 gig Studio or 16" 32 gig M1 pro . - decisions, decisions. Cheers, Ross

People are running the laptop Max with no fan issues so I imagine we're safe to believe the studio will be golden. Am i wrong in thinking the mini doesn't even have fans? Cheers, Ross

Base model in Aust $3099; having that amount and variety of connections (shows someone's been listening) obviates an AUD $500 dock straight up not to mention the base comes with 512 SSD / 32 gig ram.
My point is; that's a hypothetical $1100 upgrade on a $1699 512 gig mini (if you could get it with with 32 gigs of ram) and it also has 10 gig ethernet and 2 extra GPU cores so if that fits anyone's needs , it's golden if perhaps a little pricey but rarely do you regret paying for something if it's what you need and does it right.
My biggest query is fan noise (other than do i actually need it)
Cheers, Ross

I cant see a pro mini seeing the light of day - the studio is "it" ; why would Apple compromise Studio's sales with a pro mini?

Interesting topic. I've a singer who has severe whistling - anywhere from 2.5 k to 4.5 k - so I am having to isolate every example , ascertain it's resonant frequency and kill it with narrow band audiosuite in 'Tools (up to 9db reduction at it's worst). it's not perfect but beats whistling ; the challenge is to not make it sound unnatural. Am using a Stedman and have never thought of it exacerbating this sibilant whistle , so will be worth investigating. I recall Terry Manning swearing off metal pop screens big time.

a simple test is, using the same leads just plug them into opposite channels of the outboard if it's the outboard it'll be crook on the opposite side to what it originally was and finally use the leads of the "good" side in the crook side just to nail it down further. Cheers
