Looking for some feedback on the 017 tube mic, specifically for vocals.
Any reference tracks? How does it compare to your other mics, how would you describe its tone?

I almost bought one instead of the U67 reissue. It’s more modern and brighter than a U67. Sounds great. I tested both mics head to head, plus some others.

How did it take eq and compression for vocals? Did it have a unique sound you don't really hear in other mics? The few "best mic I ever heard reviews out there-want to make sure isn't just marketing lol

Didn’t EQ or compress it, sorry! I don’t think it has a “unique” sound. I think it has a high quality sound that can be and is being used in well engineered records that are selling a good amount of copies. See Ryan Hewitt and The Lumineers, for instance.

Lots of great info there. I have it next to a 67. Sounds exceptionally rich and classy. realgearonline.com/thread/9733/fs-soyuz-17?page=1#post-192795

It's a great mic for sure. I've got one that goes head to head with my vintage 67. Subtle differences only. Plus Adam, a known standup dude, has one for a great price!

I used it on two tracks of my new album, and comparing it to a U67 was like looking at two sisters, but they were different. The 0-17 was smoother than the 67, the 67 was bigger. I use the 0-19 all the time, and it's a wonderful mic, similar to the 0-17, but it can't quite handle the hard hits as elegantly, but I prefer it on acoustic guitar to both the 0-17 and the U67.

The jury's still out on that. I haven't had time to do any real tracking. I'm trying to set up a visit to the beautiful Barbershop Studios where engineer Jeremy Gillespie is at. They have a couple of 67's there to compare to. I did a 30 minute female voice over with the SA67 last week, and it clearly likes female voices. There is no sibilance to speak of. It also seems to like proximity, so to get the most out of it, I may have to step in a bit. More to come..

Just picked one of these up. Used prices on these are really good for the buyer. Anyway - I’m extremely impressed with it so far. No fighting with eq. Exceptional top end. I see how people would say it’s a “finished” sound. And that’s what I’m looking for. Something you put up and don’t have to futz with.

I bought a used one for $2850. That’s a huge discount for the $4000 it goes for new. It’s an extremely well done mic. I’ll report more as I use it more. But right now what I’m finding is is is sitting in mixes with minimal eq. If it saves me time then it’s a winner.

Thats pretty good feedback. So are you using this mostly for vocals at the moment? Actually did a snippet tonight that I need to review where I used it for acoustic too. It was literally just in front of my desk. For acoustics and vocal. For acoustic, it Honestly sounded better than any other LDC I’ve used. I actually use Soyuz 013 for acoustics. But this was really great. Never thought of being a Soyuz guy, but they just work.

I’ve ended up buying the whole range. They’re the best sounding modern mics I’ve heard. The 017 sounds great with a jan 5654W tube. Like a 47 and a 67 had a beautiful baby.

I am not being wowed by them like you guys. I have been trying them through neve preamp and weight tank tube preamp and yes it sounds fine but it doesnt wow me. Am i getting too fussy in my older age? I wont be selling any of my Soyuz ‘s just yet as i have not given them a fair chance....so it seems. Looking forward to hearing the results. .

I kind of judge by how much work I have to do getting it to fit in the mix. I’ve had mics that sound like Zeus coming down from Mt. Olympus…but I had to carve a tunnel to get it to fit properly in the mix. This one really is just kindve working right out of the box. A dip here and there, but quick and easy. And I can hear why it’s compared to the 67. It’s got that nice compression characteristic and a similar voicing.

Vintage King - well, Chad pinged me about it because he knew I was looking. If I’m remembering correctly, there were several completed sales on Reverb where they went for that price. This one is from 2019 and doesn’t have the new PS, so maybe that’s why it was cheaper.
