This may sound silly, but.... is it pronounced STAY Level or STAH Level? I never said it out loud but when I still had mine I would jokingly read it to myself as St. A Level when adjusting things. Like the level is getting blessed.

Doesn't every one of us have at LEAST one V-Comp yet? If not, why not? Essential gear. OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I FREAKING HAVE TO POST...... Yes, I know I'm shouting. I'M STOKED. STOKED!!!!!!!!!! Happens on occasion, but not enough when I'm mixing to be a common occurrence. And not nearly often enough to make mixing jump up and shout exciting. But tonight, TONIGHT - I tried BOTH V Comps on my mix buss. I've never had them there before as they are always on Bass or Vox or something inside the mix. I have much more "sophisticated and elegant" solutions for the mix buss before something so heavy handed. But I was having an issue, and just randomly dropped them on the mix buss to check something. O. M. G. !!!! They completely blew up my EDM mix in the most amazing and fantastic way. L/R Movement - MOVEMENT!, depth, and jaw dropping width happened. Almost a revelation moment. Now I'm in a quandary. I need two to put on individual mix elements. I can't spare them for the mix bus. Will I now need 4 V Comps? Where will I put them? I'm out of rack space.... Sigh..... Maybe it's an anomaly and I'm just tired. I will check back tomorrow and see if I'm still on Cloud 9.......

Just bought my first Audioscape device, the VComp+. Super stoked to get exploring it. audioscape very cool devices you have made. Thanks so much for offering these! Btw folks- the VComp regular is $150 off right now and in stock as i6f this writing:-) www.audio-scape.com/products/vcomp6386-compressorI read this entire thread tonight and... Whew! What a blast. Tons of great insight here. Thank you everyone for sharing your knowledge, tips and experiences Even though the current sale on the VComp regular increased the price disparity between it and the VComp+, I decided to go for the plus version anyway for the extra flexibility of 3 additional release times. Having the Drive toggle switch is also probably going to add some neat use cases as a HW insert so I can drive it harder coming out of the DAW without clipping the DAC. Has anyone here tried the VComp+ and can comment on the additional release times and Drive usage? audioscape thank you for posting the release times for the VComp earlier in this thread. Could you please list the release times for the VComp+? Are they the same as VComp regular butwith 3 additional ones? Or altogether different?

I’ve had about 6 retro versions with both the NOS 6386 and the 6BA6 (retro also used the 6BJ6 I think) and I don’t know if I could truthfully say there was much of a difference. I’m sure there’s someone with more experience that could tell a difference.
Not a fair question I know since you weren't there to know the source or the settings of the V-comp AS audio clips,....but what's your impression of the AS V-Comp Audio clips compared to your memory of your past Retro Sta's ?
I’ve got Retro STA Level and compared it to lots of clips from the AS V-Comp. I think the AS hardware sounds great (I have an Opto comp) their V-Comp has a similar action and some of the girth of the Retro unit. To my ears the Retro STA has more thickness and authority - but V-Comp is no slouch and like all AS gear somewhat of a bargain.

What's the difference between the two v comps?

What's the difference between the two v comps? I think it is that the plus version has three additional recovery times, so nine instead of six. It also has a 'drive' switch that reduces negative feedback and thus provides an additional 5 dB of gain staged after the input knob. And then finally it has a backlit VU meter. I think that's all of the differences.

Did you ever write about the differences between the V-Comp and the Retro units? I would like to know your thoughts (because you have lots of experience with the Retro), are they close?

Yes - they are close. The tones might be slightly different...the Retro might have a little more girth and "effortlessness"...but man...nobody could pick them apart on a consistent basis. If you want a one to one (well, kinda) with an immaculate build - and will retain its value better (most likely)...I'd go Retro. If you want a workhorse that is 98% there and more release options - go for the V-Comp. The input stages seem different, though. You have to go much further with the V-Comp input to get the same gain reduction. I'm actually going to pick up another one as soon as I can afford it. And I'll probably just go for the non-plus one. I never use the drive...maybe some do...but I do prefer these things having meter lights.

I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I thought reducing negative feedback would roll off the top end…which the drive switch doesn’t do for me. Interesting, good to know it doesn't sound rolled off. Thanks. I was assuming that the V-Comp+ Drive toggle was the same NFB design as that of the ASA-6A. In the manual for the ASA-6A it labels the Drive toggle as "NFB toggle". ASA-6A drive toggle description: "Reduces the negative feedback and drives the front-end with another +5 dB of gain, saturating it's input and output transformers and lighting up it's gain-stage tubes." I think this is then conducive with what you are describing. For example on my Coil preamps dialing down the NFB (ccw) brightens the time and increases gain. And increasing the NFB darkens the tone and rolls off the highs while decreasing gain. So here for the V-Comp+ (provided it uses the same NFB drive as the ASA-6A) activating the drive toggle would be like dialing down the NFB ccw in a Coil preamps and should saturate more with more high end and more gain.

Wow. VComp+ Deluxe is a very special device that will take some getting used to. Although not the intent of grabbing this sweet gear, I've plumbed the depths of the 30 db GR rabbit hole and hoo daddy is it ever seductive! Those discoveries are yet still to be described. In the meantime tho, I've been trying to be a bit more middlin' and barely bump the needle while minimizing artifacts and leveling up the thiccness of a track. @johnkenn, I feel the same thing as you sir! The "Gain" switch definitely does not roll off the high end. It may even enhance sibilance. I think then that the gain switch is reducing NF to allow more high freq and THD through. Still early days though :-) After an evening of fiddling, going too far into -30 dB GR nether regions, backing off, getting ticked off at my cowardice for backing off, sallying forth back into -20 dB GR land, hearing things raised from the background of the audio that no-one was ever meant to hear (was that a burp?!), deciding that wisdom is the better part of valor and backing off, and then coming to terms with my reluctance to smash like hulk even though it somehow. still. sounds. great. Like, seriously, every breath a vocalist takes comes pushing to the forefront and each click of the soft palate rings out. But despite an uncanny valley kind of low level signal enhancement, the loud parts saturate pleasantly. There is never any shrieky or shrill or farty saturation as long as the program material is treated respectfully. By respectful treatment, I mean a studious attention to the attack and release and gain staging so that the VComp+ doesn't click and glitch as described in the device documentation. Actually, at one point (not the example uploaded here) I ended up going full on glitchy (triple mode, particularly fast release, gain switch in) on these vocals and then blended them back in parallel and it was freaking awesome. The 'glitch' as audioscape describes it is a snappy, transient distortion that can occur on the transient upswing and it's downswing as well. When blended in parallel so far on vocals (or snare) it somehow punches up the phrase (or hit) and still smears it pleasantly at the same time. I'll try to upload some of this next. Two samples- the original vox track from a Lewitt mix contest, and the same vox track processed through the VComp+. I wanted this to be just a gentle kiss of sweetness and light to fill out the yawning space in this vocal. Below are the loudness stats. The processed one is the exact same integrated LUFS and True Peak Max. It is just a bit less than a dB lower in dynamic range and has lower short term max. To my (very satisfied) ears the VComp+ processed sample is thicker, weighteir, fills out the sound space more fully and has some goddam gravitas that the original does not. Loving this beast so far! https%3A//soundcloud.com/poppaflavor/dirty-vox-oghttps%3A//soundcloud.com/poppaflavor/dirty-vox-vcompplus-medium
