So you prefer the Lyd 48s to the KH310, or at least think they are of similar quality? I can't make up my mind just yet. I will say that the Lyds are inspiring in ways that the KH310s don't seem to be. Now granted, that may be because the 310s are actually the flatter speaker, which should in theory be the preferable thing. I'm just unclear on why I am preferring the Lyds and struggling to figure that out. I do ultimately want a flat monitor. I just need to figure out if the Neumann is actually flatter or just boring. One other observation I've noticed has to do with the sweet spot. I realize that the wave guide on the 310s is supposed to allow for a wide sweet spot. However, one thing I sort of like about the Dyns (my old BM5As and the Lyd 48s) is that you KNOW when you enter or leave the sweet spot. Which, even if it may not be as wide of a sweet spot as the 310s, you have confidence that you are in it and not second guessing yourself. I suppose I'd get used to it, but I feel like I might be constantly wondering if I'm truly in the sweet spot when using the 310s, and getting all of the information. The sweet spot on the Dyns is strong and you know when you're in it or when you leave it. One last post and I hope this helps in context.. Just for a contrast I ordered a pair of Genelec 8341's, if you read any technical specifications they seem to score even better and in terms of flat GLM (DSP, phase etc. correction software) will make sure they win every time.
They sounded nothing like the Neumann's, the Genelec's were much more inline with the LYD 48's. So IMO if you're looking for a correlation in terms of what's "right" IME you're barking up the wrong tree, I've yet to find out what's the ultimate reference even at a pricier levels than this. If you truly want flat look into room correction software or a pair of speakers with proper DSP correction or even both. From there on it's just what you get on with the best..
The Dyn's have a strong phantom centre and it's wide enough to understand where you need to be. It also helps with placement because out of that the image collapses, now the 310's are quite coaxial in their representation but for lack of better words I found the staging a bit more distant if not wider. Neither wrong, just different I guess.. For another comparison the 59's have a huge sweet spot, far larger than the LYD's but it's a lot more defined in my room than the KH310's.
In the end it came down to price, the Neumann's started somewhat knocking on the door of the Core 59's. In a loose translation after taxes the 59's are $5K here, the Neumann's are $4.2K and the LYD's are $2150.00. I certainly don't think they're $2K better, ultimately it seemed like a minor upgrade with some shortcomings as opposed to a must have and the price just threw them out of the equation. So I guess it depends what you can get them for? At one point on sale I saw the KH310's for $3.5K and I nearly bought them.

Yeah, this all pretty much tracks with the thought process I've been having on this up to this point. As there is no way to truly say what is flat, it's a crap shoot to try to hit that mark. That being said, I'm trying out a bunch of references to maybe sort of iteratively convince myself of what I believe to be the most honest playback for me in my room. I think I'm generally with you on the 310s not being worth the extra $2.5k. I did pick them up as a demo unit, so I paid about $4k for the 310s, versus the usual $5k. Even then though, if I sent the 310s back and used the savings to get a sub and/or something like a Dirac, I could see myself being happier.

Danny this where I would love to see one of the correction systems provide some distortion measurements! I mean hey we nailed the freq, and phase issues but here’s how much your monitoring system is distorting. OK those numbers would make most cry but still, it would be eye opening.

For those of you with kh310s, or who have at least used or tried them, to what degree did you adjust any of the eq settings on the back versus flat?
I'm asking because, though I know Neumann recommends flat settings for studio environments, I've been messing around with the +1dB treble setting on the kh310s and been "maybe" getting better results. The jury is still out, but it's a little closer in the high end to what the Lyds do at a flat setting.
Which then opens Pandora's box as far as what I might be able to achieve with either the Lyd OR kh310 if a Sonarworks/Trinnov/Dirac/etc. comes into play...

I just checked mine and I have the tweeters set to +1 and the rest at 0. I turned the tweeters to +1 some time ago because I was always mixing a little too much high end in and my cymbals would be too crispy.

I will say though, with the +1dB treble setting, the distortion in the high end seems a little higher. I need to play around with the input and output settings some more, I guess. Edit: Lowering the output switch on the back from 100 to 94 seems to maybe have helped a little.

Quint I’m not sure what mine are set at - I can check tomorrow. But I *think* I ended up leaving them flat. I was going to say a couple things before you lifted the top by +1: First, it sounds as though you may have found your speaker in the LYD48s, which would be awesome! Secondly, I was going to recommend something that I don’t hear many other people mention, but it’s helped me over the years. Since you’re able to continue trying both of these for awhile, and you’re suspicious about the Dynaudio “sound” being “normal” for you, I would recommend putting the Dyns away for a whole week. Stop comparing the speakers. Just put the KH310s up, and play them like crazy for the next week. Listen to them in the background when you’re doing other stuff. Listen to them intently, paying super close attention. Turn them up and listen to them casually from the other room. Play guitar for fun while listening to them. Get lost in some records you’ve haven’t listened to in a long time. Etc. Etc. Etc. Just listen to them constantly and see if over the course of a week, your ears begin to “re-normalize,” as it were. Then after a week, put the Dyns back up and see what happens. If you say, “whoa, these Dyns sound weird,” then you’ve got a contest on your hands. If, on the other hand, you say, “Ahhhhhhh, that feels better,” then put the Neumanns back in their boxes and send ’em back.

I've been listening to all kinds of shit on the 310s, and plan to continue doing so for the coming days. I want to get away from the Lyds for a while and see how the 310s treat me. My plan is to do this for the next week and see how I feel after that. I will say I'm noticing that, as I get further away from the sense memory of the Lyds or my current Dyns, I "might" be coming around to the 310s. I've also gone back to the flat setting on the 310s and think I prefer it to the +1dB treble setting. It just felt a little off kilter the more I listened to it, even if it sounded better at first. I DO think I prefer the bass on the 310s and I'm coming around to the rest of the frequency spectrum. I'm currently doing a little Blood Sugar Sex Magik and enjoying it. What input and output settings on the back do you have yours set at?

I do have the output set for 100 to have it more in line with my other monitors when switching between them.

I mean hey we nailed the freq, and phase issues but here’s how much your monitoring system is distorting. OK those numbers would make most cry but still, it would be eye opening. It's interesting you should mention that, originally back in 2017 when I did my first monitor test I rounded it down from thirty to two. It was pretty much between the Dyn's and a pair of Geithain RL906's (the cheap one's at $3K ).. Once you're in the sweetspot they sounded pretty much the same (bass roll off aside) besides one thing, the Geithain's seemed to be a fair bit more distorted. Not in a broadband noise sense, everything was just "warmer" like the effect you'd get from a decent compressor for example.
I preferred the Geithain's (to an an extent) because they were easy to work with and the frequency response was very flat, although price, bass and accuracy in terms of distortion nudged the decision. It said a lot about the Dyn's though, they were inline with many more expensive monitors and they punched well above their weight.. There is a limit to that of course.
When I heard the Core 59's, PSI's and ATC there was no going back. However there wasn't any major issues with the LYD's, I'd created one by feeling the need to upgrade.. I've said this before but ignorance is bliss sometimes.

Before the days of everyone putting the speakers in their ears of on their ears it was important to at least get a taste of your mix off axis just to get an idea. It’s funny I was walking around a Marshal Field ‘s in Chicago with a guy who had done some minor hits one day when one of his songs comes on through the crappy Atlas ceiling speakers in mono and we were completely off axis and he looks ar me and says “man I suck” then as we keep walking towards being on axis a smile grows on his face walk away from being on axis frown. It’s was 4min of watching an ego go up and down. It’s even more fun to watch a live system tech who is using most line arrays in that weird area where if you are using a side fill the 2 line arrays act as a quasi point source, most were not designed to ever sum side to side. Oh the damage they can do trying to make this seam sound good.

So after having some days to just listen to the Neumann's, I'm coming around to their merits, so I'm glad I've stuck this out and didn't just put them back in the box.
In the next few days, I'm going to put the Lyds back up and see how that goes, but, at the very least, I don't think the Lyds are going to be an obvious winner or maybe even a winner at all. I'm actually suspecting that I will like the Neumann's better, but we'll see. There are things that I'm really liking about them.

Quint, I think your getting to the really really hard part where you start to realize the reality of the fact that some times it’s not that different is better, different can simply be different is different. It’s comforting to come to that point because their isn’t a wrong Choice but equally a pain in the ass because there isn’t a right choice. Good luck have enjoyed your journey.

I will have LYDs here Thursday, joining the 8330As and Shape 65s. This will be the most educational week I have had in a while. There's no place I could compare aspects of Genelec, Focal and Dynaudio sound qualities. I don't expect them to be completely representative but I suspect each of them can represent the flavor of the brands to some degree. I suspect the latter will come down pretty quickly.

Even after the Core's I'm a tad bit interested.

From what I've heard the AMT's are nothing like Adam's setup, they're quite "laid back" as opposed to pokey from the reviews. I'll see if I can get a demo, tried before but I was more focussed on the Neumann's at the time..

From what I've heard the AMT's are nothing like Adam's setup, they're quite "laid back" as opposed to pokey from the reviews. I'll see if I can get a demo, tried before but I was more focussed on the Neumann's at the time.. I appreciate the suggestion but, at this point, I think I've narrowed it down to the two pair I have on hand and I'm going to make my decision based on that.

One of these two is staying and the other is going.

Hey Danny, While I love true ribbons, I have yet to fall in love with any AMT “ folded Ribbon”, their are some Planers I like, but when it comes to distortion and HF drivers the only things with higher distortion numbers.

I have yet to fall in love with any AMT “ folded Ribbon”. Understood, neither have I but the price / performance etc. is pretty hard to ignore. Worth a demo at least if I can get one..
The issue with the Core 59's is physical size, they're quite costly and bass dispersion can be somewhat problematic. Although it's a big driver for a 38Hz response, very clean distortion wise and the phantom centre / surround is fantastic. LMF / mids are eerie in terms of clarity even if they do stand out a bit..
They're not perfect but I guess no monitor truly is and besides the HEDD's there's nothing really else to try. I really liked the Neumman's / LYD's but they're not on the same level as the Core 59 which punch upwards..
If there's a cheaper and smaller monitor you can think of that'll give the Core's a run for their money let me know.

I thought you were done and had your "I'm good for the next 20 years" pair of monitors in the Core 59s?
