That comes dangerously close to those cartoons with the "suck" "don't suck" knobs...
I didn't read the whole thing, but who is making the initial "colors"? Are they just opamps? I'm terribly confused...

Looks like the initial red, blue, yellow are tape sim, cinemag tranny, and distortion module. It looks like Peterson Goodwin of DIYRE (DIY Recording Equipment) and Link Simpson of Steller Electronics are making the first modules. Not sure if they've got any clout, but the concept seems like it could be cool. The fact that you can build a pair of these guys for $350 is pretty cool. Can't commit to something like this without any audio to back it up though. I guess we'll see what comes of it in time.

Peterson has said that he is working on getting some audio samples together now. I am actually going to be contributing another Colour module which should be available around launch time. With the list of other folks doing the same, there should be a good bunch to choose from.

Any info about the color that you're working on? I took a basic CMOS inverter type fuzz and tweaked it down to make about 4% THD at +4dBu. Of course, you can drive it more or less as you please.

I pre-ordered two sets.

Without audio clips eh? Lot of faith. I'm waiting to hear something, but I'm interested in a pair. Definitely seem like they can be pretty cool and useful. A stepped stereo unit would be nice, but it seems like that'll be further down the line.

If U go to petersons site, it explains pretty well what it's all about. Petersons a good guy, so is Brian(horvitz) I trust both of them, neither wouldn't settle on sub par kits.

I'm sure is a quality product, just not sure the sound is something I need without samples. Where ya been man? You've been quiet lately. Happy New Year.

Well, I like Petersen's approach to things, so I figured I'd support the effort. The pre-orders seem like a kickstarter campaign. Besides, I like to build stuff.

Cool, I'm eager to hear what you think.
As everyone knows who has done samples, it's difficult (impossible?) to capture what a piece of gear is all about with a few wet/dry clips. In the case of something like Colour, I think it's the really subtle effects that will end up being a staple of people's recording chain. But those don't translate to "wow" in a quick a/b comparison.
Anyhow, that was the reasoning behind my hesitation to make samples. But I understand putting down money for a new piece of gear (and pre-order nonetheless) is a leap of faith, so if it will make people more comfortable I'm all for it.

Just took a quick listen on my cheapo computer speakers at work. I see what you're saying. Subtle is right. I'll be up in the studio tomorrow night with some proper monitors and should get a better feel for it then. The quick listen here might influence me toward a single device rather than a pair though. I can see this getting used in the recording chain more than the mixing chain at this point. Maybe a stereo box down the road too...

stiff competition from the CAPI Missing Link
which I haven't tried. I'm interested in Peterson's stuff too. I built one of his Line 2 Amp style boxes, well just copied his design, and it's very nice!

Peterson, thank you for posting samples. I am really impressed with the 15ips/germanium "color" on drums. Wow, I want this now. I could see this getting used on a whole mix with the right stereo matching. The JFT/"triode" color seems to clip a bit but I'm sure that could be dialed back. The 15ips was clipping on the guitar, too. This is a cool product! I think this is a lot better than Decapitator or Waves NLS or whatever. Your sound clips definitely got my attention--good move posting them.
Can't go wrong with the 500 series format either. I think you've got a winner, here. I can't think of any comparable products.
