Holy Crap! I just got one hooked up and redid a voice over due to content change. On the previous track, I had the CLA Blue Stripe in use. there is absolutely no comparison. The WA76 is warm and open and not pinched and thin like the CLA. What a great purchase - no question of possibly better... it just is. It is a cool addition to my FET III as they are quite different. I have a CL7802 en route and can't wait to try a hardware Opto->FET vocal treatment. Should be fun Plug-ins when compared with real gear tend to fall away pretty quickly, but especially compressors. I do not poo-poo plug ins! However, the difference in action and realism, sounding like a record...is something only hardware can do in our experience. War

War, why did CL stop making the 7802? Did you ever hear the reason?

way off topic but I think you just took delivery of a cl 7802. I have one too but upgraded the transformers with custom run CineMag's; thought you might want to now that David Gerer, the Pres, benchtested the stock one I sent him and then custom designed a new transformer specifically for the cl7802 considering its tube stage you can order 100% steel or nickel or 50/50; I went zebra; easy mod, can send pics if you are interested oh back on topic got my 2 wa76's today and just was calibrating ( used m5 internal) them but am letting them burn in ! Got mine in the rack today, and the cable I ordered is 2" short! I wanted the shortest cable possible because I had once ordered custom Mogami cables from Warhead at Zen Pro made for my Blackspade mic and power supply, and foolishly made the one that goes from my power supply to my Apollo 15' long. It could easily have been 3' or 6', so now I have 12' of cable rolled up sitting on the power supply. Dang, I'll go get a longer cable for the WA76 to Apollo tomorrow, and hopefully take the WA1176 for a spin soon.

Hope you work it out soon mjb. you'll likely love as everyone else has.
Interesting, there is a lot more going on inside the 7802 than the WA76.... weight too.

Ah, the 7802 is dual mono/stereo and has the tube , opto led technology and its drive functionality?
also, I guess comparing 50's design layout to sort of a modular more contemporary ?
if you are interested, talking to christian at proaudiotubes about a tube upgrade can tailor the cl7802. i have experimented with my nos ge from my rode classic mine same as c12 and I fot a nos mullard tube which is smoother and sweeter.
The 7802 is a nice piece gear: got turned on to it by cowboy !

I think it's fair to include the Chameleon Labs 7802 in this discussion as a decent opto to couple with the WA76 as a decent FET. And certainly, the Opto/FET pairing on a vocal chain usually garners divine results. My go-to vocal compression is CL1b into the Bluestripe Replica. Absolutely perfect. Here... btw, read this: chameleonlabs.com/pdf/CL_7802_Review_1009.pdf

I can't say enough about the instant difference between plugs and the WA76. I already had an FET comp that does amazingly well on the buss. But the WA76, being a classic FET style sound and used at higher ratios is immediately appreciated.

War, why did CL stop making the 7802? Did you ever hear the reason? Willing to bet lack of sales, however Chameleon was sold as a company as of Dec 31, 2013. I had a short exchange with the new owner, and told him I sure would love to see the 7802 come back. way off topic but I think you just took delivery of a cl 7802. I've got my WA76 followed by a Retro Doublewide and am really happy with the results. I posted a link earlier in the thread to another thread with samples, but it hasn't really gotten any plays or traction. Anyway, this mix in using the WA76 into the DW on the lead vocal. I think the combo did a great job of pulling the vocal to the front. (Note: mix is still a work in progress, doing a renovation on my house and haven't been in the studio in a couple of weeks.)

I will say this about warm audio. when comparing this unit to the purple I find the purple audio 77 to be bright and brittle I find the WA76 to be much closer to the revision D at this price. It's a no brained. I'm going for two of them. The wa76 has softer edges to it. For sure.

Nice rack kcat.
I'm going to try tracking acoustic guitar tomorrow with the WA1176. Signal path is Neumann KM84 > Warm's ToneBeast w/ John Hardy opamp > WA1176 > Apollo > Logic X, Anyone have any suggestions?
Bryce suggested Attack as slow as possible, Release as fast.
I have two KM84's on loan, so I could use the Apollo pre for one of the mics if I want to use two mics, but I usually prefer one.
* by the way, WTF are this little green circles doing EVERYWHERE I go all of a sudden? When you scroll over them, you see a pop up ad, but the ad's not even remotely relayed to the subject. I see them on eBay, even the NY Times has them, ugh… it's even here on the word SLOW..

https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-john-butler/no-1176-test Quick acoustic guitar sound test, just grabbed my Taylor, left my Martin in the closet. First one's, WITHOUT WA1176.

https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-john-butler/yes-1176-test This one is WITH 1176.
I set all the way fast, release all the way slow, Ratio on 4. Neumann KM84>ToneBeast using John Hardy 990 opamp on Clean, Steel. Levels were as matched as I could get them, I used a test tone.

Between 2 and 3 db, peaks might have touch 4db jcoutu1. Which did you prefer, with or without 1176?

Well Martin, I can honestly say that this is the first example of an 1176 on acoustic guitar that i actually liked. It really tamed the dynamics in a positive way!

I preferred without but I think that's to do with the compressor settings because the compressed version has lost some sparkle. I'd like to hear it with a slower attack
