It seems convenient, I'll say that much. Redundant I think. I wonder what the processing hit would be running one of those on 10 or 20 channels.. I'm already out of power anyway. I'll be looking for a new computer at the years end. The summer's coming and my income drops 90% for two months, ugh.
Also, after buying FG-X based on the promise it would be 64 bit by "Spring" 2013, I keep a huge grain of salt handy when watching Slate infomercials. I dig a lot of what they're doing, but as they leap forward so quickly, working on VMS, now VMR, Raven, etc., the little guy who buys a plug gets lost in the sauce sometimes.

Supposedly the processing hit is minimal because of Slate's framework...

If it's $149 as an intro, it will be $99 at some point. That's just how he seems to work. Yeah, but he'll only offer the $99 deal for a Spring Sale for one week only... until popular demand makes him extend it perpetually.

Fwiw frameworks just let you write one algorithm for all formats and platforms. The algorithm determines efficiency as far as I know. The grouping features in VCC and VTM probably keep them from using any but their own framework. Steven swears VTM is the same but it sounds better to me in addition to being more efficient.

Bob, do you think VTM sounds like tape...or does it just sound good regardless of if it sounds like tape? Personally I just like the sound of it. Haven't heard tape in years....

Looking at the Virtural Mix Rack, it occurred to me that's why Slate hasn't come out with mono versions of the VBC compressors.

There are so many variations of tape and alignment that there's no reason not to think it sounded like the machines and tapes they modeled.
I hooked Waves up with the Ampex that was modeled for Kramer Tape. The plug-in sounds well within the range of what different rolls of Scotch 207 sound like on that machine. It you hit it too hard it sounds just as bad too. The Slate is much more modern machines and tape showing the progress that was made in 25 years. I haven't heard the Universal ATR 100 but the real machines always struck me as being very quiet but having a bit of a smiley-curve compared to a Studer. My only complaint about the slate is that it increases the gain slightly. At least with the new version you can set an offset in the gain controls to correct this hype factor.

So - again - why is it good that it has it's own rack/interface?

So - again - why is it good that it has it's own rack/interface? well you can order the plugs any way you want; like a real rack but also you can have 4 open at once and run your signal through as you like and all parametres are live so you don't have to open and close single plugs; tweak 1-4 at the same time

Yeah...it's really pretty damn awesome. I think I answered my own question about why it has it's own gui rack - because it's freaking handy. I think there's a bug in the 116 - I'm not really hearing any difference in the different ratios...and the meter seems a little suspect. But - the grab/attack on both of these compressors seem to be even more realistic than anything I've used - they are able to lock it down a little more than UAD. That being said, the attack and release knobs don't seem to really have a lot of usefulness...e.g. - they seem a little "fisher-pricey". I can get vast tonal differences with the UAD Attack and Release. The Neve sounds pretty damn good too...I tried it on kick and didn't think it sounded the greatest. Thought I would pull up the UAD Neve and see a major difference...well, not really. Pretty similar.
The one that is really awesome is the Revival thing. Kind of feels like a console emu that you can use to thicken and brighten. Nice. At $149, it's a great value. I could see still using he UAD 1176's for snare and more tonal shaping and first duty stuff, but could definitely see using this a lot.

If you don't need Slate's ilok2 offer, the VMR is available for $149 plus you get a $20 credit from both Audiodeluxe and PluginDiscounts.

When popmann said, "I've often said that I want a DAW button that would open a windo with all the plugs for a given track--and close it with one click.", did that ever ring a bell. I would LOVE to have something like that in Logic.

He'll fix it and it will rock like all his other plugs. I have yet to find something i don't like. Some are useable but never suck... To me.

I am glad I held off on the IK group buy. VMR is very nice, demoed for about 10 minutes before grabbing it. I really like the Neve and SSL eqs. Heck, at $149 for essentially 5 plugins that's less than $30 each. Not a bad deal at all.

This thing sounds awesome!! I'm not driving anything hard, being gentler than usual with boosts and cuts, gain reduction. Hardware seems to need less tweaks than soft so I thought I'd approach it like hardware and I'm loving the results. Now, these are the first ssl,1176 and neve emus I've owned so I can't say how it stacks up to others. Great value too!
