Spending 40K + for a new 16 channel console and having to modify it. Whats wrong with that picture. Yeah I've watched 150-200k consoles get modded to death. My bud had Firlotte do around 20k to his vintage API

Listening Noah's mix samples on headphones, the Capi channels instantly sound less congested, deeper, more expensive. Damn! I felt the same way. No brainer. Instantly heard more then I was actually hoping for. Pray for my schematics guys!

Funny even on my tiny iphone speaker, the vocal/snare sounds bigger/more solid.

The biggest thing that jumps out at me is the smoother transients on the modded channel, especially on the kick, but also elsewhere like the acoustic gtr on the verses. In comparison the unmodded version feels a bit cluttered, like I was constantly being pulled away from focusing on the vocals. Even though it's subtle, the modded version increases my enjoyment of the song by a good margin. (cool song btw!).

Just changing the xformers, opamps and some caps/resistors. If you go back in the thread, Jeff gave a thorough explanation of what he did. I am moving forward with the rest of the console though. It was an immediate, no brainer. Within the first few seconds of listening I knew I'd be modding more.

noah shain this is gonna be one serious rig man! Excited for you! So, you're going to put fc526's and lc53's across how many channels? What is the layout on your console exactly? Did you find any answers to acquiring the schematic? It seems it'd be an easy thing to get a hold of..? do they make you send the thing in for repairs or have approved service techs they want you to use? I couldn't imagine them not giving a paying customer schemo's so they can service their own rig...

I think Noah needs to add a "C" to the logo of that console! But man those modded channels sound how I would want a API 1608 to sound! Noah this thread might motivate the folks at API to be less than helpful l.

I'm imagining 16 litz wire lc53s and 8 litz wire fc526s in the 8 aux slots!

Noah this thread might motivate the folks at API to be less than helpful l. Spport has been great for the 2+ years I've had the console. Very responsive and generous. No disrespect to anyone is intended by doing these mods. In fact it's a lovely console. LOT'S of great records being made on them. I'm after a vintage sound but want modern reliability. That's really it. Let's coin a new phrase to go along with "warm" "fat" "bright" "present" etc... Litz Like, "That bass needs more Litz" or "Man, that mic pre sounds so Litz!!"

here is the speil from tape op.
"Frank DeMedio based this console on the API 312 preamp card, but made some important modifications, including replacing the input transformer and removing decoupling capacitors. These changes created an API-based console with a unique sounding midrange and a smooth top end. This console can be heard on records such as Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and The Foo Fighters 1995 eponymous release."

JS can confirm but that sounds a lot like what he did.

#1 sounds the most different to me so I am going to guess that's the modified channel.
#2 and #3 are a lot closer I am going to take a wild guess that #3 is the stock channel. #2 sounds slightly smoother.
Gosh, blind guessing is terrifying, I might just have to retire if I'm completely wrong.

I'm late to this post, but it's so cool. Those modded channels sound so good and smooth. The mix is great too Noah, and the difference between both channels are heard in my ipod earbuds.
I think I go the same as monkeyxx. I'm still listening through cheap earbuds, so if everything fails, I'm gonna blame them.
