Nice work Jeff. It really cleaned things up. The low end is tighter and more defined. I had a hard time understanding the vocals on the stock sound file. Mix sounded slightly darker and frequencies were competing with the vox, a smeared sound. The modded version opened that up.
I hear the same thing with the Legacy consoles. They are not bad, but once you hear a vintage one, you wish for that sound.

Curious to hear your thoughts roundbadge You've been on your 1608 for a while and probably know it so well. It was you that got me thinking about modding it in the first place!

Yes I'm in MT Washington near Atwater Village/Glendale Jeff do you think modding channels myself would be difficult? I'm an ok solderer..not great though.

Its not that hard IMO but I do a ton of soldering and desoldering. A good desoldering tool is a must. Not a cheap shit solder pump but something more like a Hakko 808.

Hey roundbadge I'm gonna move forward with more of these mods, hopefully including the ACA groups and mix bus. It took me all of a verse played back through the channels to know that it is a STELLAR mod and a large improvement. I'm gonna try and do the work myself. We should stay in touch. My spot is in DTLA. We ain't far apart.

I think it's probably the transformers taming the transients and then the roll off of tape...I have to say those Firlotte FC600's or whatever they're called seemed very sharp and "hi-fi" to me. Throw some of those red dots on there! I'm now a believer. I'm gonna do it ASAP. Need Litz stock...JS! I pulled the ACA board and there they are...8 trafos and 8 op amps. I'm gonna hit API for schematics and see if JS won't coach me on what else we should swap out. I'm hooked. I had more fun mixing last night than I have in months. The 440b might have had something to do with it too;) Good luck with getting the schematic they act like its the holy grail!

ive never actually tried the Blue Dots. sll what's your take? The blue dots are a little faster and punchier like the modern 2520s. I actually started with those and made them sound that way to match what was in a 1999 Legacy console. I got tired of having channels down during sessions. I do have some customers that claim the blue dots are a bit smoother in the top than the modern 2520s though, but the idea was to match the sound and keep a console alive.

Listening Noah's mix samples on headphones, the Capi channels instantly sound less congested, deeper, more expensive. Damn!

Yeah The way I see it is I likely will never buy another console. It's either keep the 1608 , make it as good as it can be or sell it and go back to the summing boxes. I like having faders and busses.
