I'm really thinking about just grabbing a KM84... there is no doubt if you get one of the good ones, they are great. If you don't like it, it's not likely you'd have a hard time unloading it?

I greatly prefer LDCs on overheads but SDCs on acoustics. Overheads need the body that only LDC can bring. Close micing the acoustic needs the lack of low mid accentuation that only an SDC can bring.
KM84? Great choice.

I'm on the SDC for OH boat (as long as they don't have chinese capsules). I like the way they pick up the transients of the cymbals, and I also like the less bottom. To me, it makes the kit sound tighter. It really comes down to taste, and how you like your kit to sound. For room mics, the LCD's are it, although, I have had sessions where the SDC worked well. The C12 clones sound great as room mics.

For me the overhead mic is 90% the sound of the kit. Usually blended along with a snare, and a kick mic. Stereo overhead, and two other mics is usually the perfect solution for most of the stuff I produce.
That being said, I will usually go with a stereo Royer SF-12 above the kit, and use a second SF-12 as the stereo room mic if at all. If I don't use the Royer and I wan't a bit more detail out of the kit, (like for a Jazz, or Bluegrass session) I will go with a old Neumann SM-69 stereo tube, and it does the trick Simple and easy.
For Acoustics, like mentioned earlier, a LDC if it's strummed parts, and for that I might use a U-67, U-87, Geffel UM-70, and sometimes with great results a Coles 4038. But if it's articulation I require, then a vintage AKG 451 E, AKG 414, or Neumann KM-84, or my favorite of all time is the tube Neumann KM-56~! (which I have a few specifically for Acoustic instruments!) You gotta hear them on Dobro's or Nationals.....

Just got my C5 back from Shannon. I had an extra omni cap and he replaces the capsule. This was a total swing in the dark so no idea what it's gonna sound like. If it sounds good ill post some files.

Yeah - the C5's are good straight out of the box...wish they were a little less bright.
